To connect a bank account to an RBI-regulated Account Aggregator (AA), sign in to an AA app, choose the bank that holds your account, provide the identifier it requests, and complete the bank’s ownership verification—described by Sahamati as an OTP step. Linking makes the account available for a later, separate consent decision; it does not automatically authorize an institution to access your data.
What an Account Aggregator does
An Account Aggregator is a regulated consent manager in India’s financial data-sharing framework. A bank holding your account can act as a Financial Information Provider (FIP); a regulated lender or other financial service requesting information can act as a Financial Information User (FIU). The AA manages the consent and transfer flow between them. The Reserve Bank of India introduced the framework through its NBFC-Account Aggregator Directions dated 2 September 2016. The Department of Financial Services explains the framework, and the RBI Directions set out its regulatory basis.
Using an AA is voluntary. You can open an AA app directly or reach an AA consent flow while using a financial service. You may register with an AA before linking any accounts. Each AA has its own app and login, so an account with one AA does not sign you into another.

- Choose an AA app. Use an AA app that supports the bank holding your account. If you already have an account with an AA, sign in there; otherwise, register with the AA you choose.
- Select your bank. In the app’s account-linking flow, choose the financial institution where the account is held. The bank is acting as the FIP for this account.
- Enter the identifier requested by the bank. The field is institution-specific. Sahamati lists a verified mobile number, PAN or FIP Customer ID as possible identifiers; its consumer FAQ also gives Customer Registration Number as an example. Your bank may ask for one of these or another identifier it uses to find your account.
- Complete the bank’s ownership check. Sahamati describes the FIP verifying ownership by sending an OTP. Enter it in the bank/FIP step shown in your app. The exact screens and OTP delivery channel can vary.
- Check the result in the AA app. Confirm that the account appears as linked before continuing to any separate request to share its information.
The account-discovery identifier and OTP are part of the bank’s verification flow. Do not give an AA your bank password, PIN or card details; Sahamati says AA data sharing is designed to avoid sharing login credentials with third parties. See its consumer FAQ for the described linking flow.

Approve a data request separately
Connecting an account is not blanket permission for an FIU to use its information. When a financial service requests data, the AA presents a consent request for you to review. The Department of Financial Services states: “No financial information of the customer is retrieved, shared or transferred by AA framework without the explicit consent of the customer.”
Before approving, check the recipient, the stated purpose, the type of information requested, and the consent’s validity or expiry. Approve only if those details match what you intended to do. The consent artefact governs the request; the RBI Directions and Sahamati’s FAQ describe consent and its controls.

Review or revoke consent
Your AA app provides a view of consents, revoked consents and FIU data-request history. You can use its consent controls to revoke an AA consent. Sahamati also says data transmitted through the AA is encrypted and that AAs cannot view, store, process or sell the customer’s transmitted data. That describes the AA’s role and restrictions; it should not be read as a claim that no other participant ever handles or retains information.

If your bank does not appear
Bank availability can differ between AA apps. Sahamati says the ecosystem is still scaling and that many FIPs initially go live with one or two AAs. Check the current FIP-AA mapping information referenced by Sahamati, or try an AA connected to your bank. Do not assume that a bank missing from one app is unavailable through every AA.

How widespread the framework is
The Department of Financial Services reported, attributing the figures to Sahamati, that as of 31 March 2026 there were 179 financial institutions live as FIPs and 989 live as FIUs; more than 2.88 billion financial accounts were enabled to share data, and users had linked 284.6 million accounts. These are ecosystem figures reported for that date, not a guarantee that a particular bank is available in every AA app. See the department’s framework update.
