There is no single button sequence that connects every VR controller to every headset. The correct steps depend on three things: the controller model, the headset it is meant to work with, and the device that runs it, such as a PS5, a Windows PC, an Apple Vision Pro, or a SteamVR setup. Confirm all three before you follow a procedure, because steps written for one combination can fail or mislead you with another.
Identify your setup first
Write down these four items before you start:
- Controller model. For example, PS VR2 Sense controllers, Oculus Rift Touch controllers, or Vive controllers.
- Headset. The headset the controllers are meant to work with. A controller that pairs with one headset is not guaranteed to work with another.
- Host device. The PS5, the Windows PC, the Apple Vision Pro, or the SteamVR computer that runs the experience.
- Software. The vendor app or setup screen the host requires, and whether the app you want to use supports that controller.
The table below summarizes the methods covered in this guide.
| Setup | Pairing method | Each controller paired separately? | Where to find the step |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS VR2 Sense on PS5 | USB cable for first-time pairing, then the PS button on each controller | Yes. Connect one controller, press PS, then repeat for the other. | PS5 pairing steps below |
| PS VR2 Sense on Windows PC | Bluetooth, using PS + Create (left) and PS + Options (right) | Yes. Select each controller in Bluetooth settings while its indicator blinks. | Windows PC steps below |
| PS VR2 Sense on Apple Vision Pro | Bluetooth, using PS + Create (left) and PS + Options (right) | Yes. Select each controller in Settings > Bluetooth while its indicator blinks. | Apple Vision Pro steps below |
| Rift Touch (Rift headsets) | Oculus app Device Setup flow | Left and right are set up in sequence through the prompts. | Rift Touch steps below |
| Vive controllers with SteamVR | SteamVR Devices > Pair Controller | Not stated in the Steam Support or SteamVR quick-start material. | SteamVR and Vive steps below |
| Meta Quest controllers | Not covered in this guide | Not covered in this guide | See the note in the Rift Touch section |
PS VR2 Sense controllers with PS5
Sony’s PS5 support page says first-time pairing requires both the left and right controllers. The steps are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect one controller to the console with the USB cable included with the headset.
- Press the PS button on that controller.
- Disconnect that controller, connect the other controller with the same cable, and press its PS button.
- Remove the USB cable before you use the controllers normally.
A few details matter after pairing. The controller is assigned to the user who is logged in at the time. A controller can pair with only one PS5 console at a time; to move it to a different console, pair it with that console. If the battery is low, Sony recommends charging both controllers after pairing.
PS VR2 Sense controllers with Windows PC
Sony’s PC setup page says first-time PC use requires Bluetooth pairing, not the PS5 USB procedure. Before you start, disconnect any USB cables attached to the controllers and charge both controllers. Then:
- Turn on Bluetooth on the PC.
- Hold PS + Create on the left controller until its indicator blinks.
- Open the PC’s Bluetooth settings, choose to add a device, and select the left controller while its indicator is still blinking.
- Hold PS + Options on the right controller until its indicator blinks.
- Select the right controller in the same Bluetooth settings while its indicator is still blinking.
If an indicator stops blinking before you select the controller, hold the same button combination again to re-enter pairing mode and repeat the selection.
Controller pairing is only one part of PC use. Sony’s PC setup also requires the PlayStation VR2 App for PC, SteamVR for Steam VR games, a PS VR2 PC adapter, and the PC connections specified on that page. A successful Bluetooth pairing does not mean the headset itself is connected to the PC.

Apple documents the PS VR2 Sense controllers as Vision Pro accessories that pair over Bluetooth. Pair each controller individually:

- A pair GFTVRCE Original Right and Left handle Hand Controller for Meta Oculus Quest 3
- On the left controller, hold PS + Create until the bottom indicator blinks.
- On the Vision Pro, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select the left controller while its indicator is still blinking.
- On the right controller, hold PS + Options until the bottom indicator blinks.
- Select the right controller in Settings > Bluetooth while its indicator is still blinking.
Apple states that not all apps support spatial accessories, so a controller that pairs successfully may still be unavailable in a specific app. Apple also documents Logitech Muse as a supported accessory: put Muse into discovery mode using its own instructions, then select it in Vision Pro Bluetooth settings.
Rift Touch controllers
Meta’s Horizon OS developer documentation, updated July 30, 2024, describes pairing for Rift Touch controllers with a Rift headset. Follow these steps with the headset connected:

- Genuine Meta Quest Touch Plus Controller – Original right-hand controller designed for Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets.
- Immersive Haptic Feedback – Advanced vibration and tactile response create more realistic interaction during VR and mixed reality gameplay.
- Precision Input Controls – Features A/B/X/Y buttons, thumbstick, capacitive thumbrest, precision pinch input, and two-stage trigger controls.
- Ergonomic & Comfortable Design – Lightweight controller layout designed for natural hand positioning and extended gaming sessions.
- Accurate VR Tracking Performance – Engineered for responsive movement tracking and smooth interaction across supported Meta Quest applications.
- Open the Oculus app on the host computer.
- Select Devices, then select the Rift.
- Choose Device Setup and proceed through the information screens.
- Under Set Up Your Input Devices, select Touch and follow the prompts.
- For the left controller, hold the Menu and Y buttons as the prompt indicates.
- Repeat the prompted procedure for the right controller.
This is a Rift procedure. It is not the consumer setup for Meta Quest headsets, and it should not be applied to Quest controllers. For Quest, check the current support pages on Meta’s website for the model you own.

Vive controllers with SteamVR
The SteamVR controller quick-start guide describes this basic procedure:
- Launch SteamVR.
- Select Devices > Pair Controller.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- After pairing, press the system button on each controller to turn it on.
Steam Support’s connection troubleshooting addresses Vive’s built-in wireless receivers. In that case, open the SteamVR console, right-click the controller icon, and choose Pair controller. Those receiver steps apply to Vive hardware and are not a general fix for other headsets.
When a controller will not connect
Work through these checks in order. Stop at the first step that explains the problem.
- Confirm the models and app support. Make sure the controller is supported by the headset and the specific app you want to use. Apple states app support varies for spatial accessories.
- Use the matching host path. Do not use the PS5 USB procedure when pairing a PS VR2 Sense controller to a PC. PC pairing uses Bluetooth.
- Select the controller while it is blinking. If the indicator stops blinking, re-enter pairing mode with the correct button combination and try again.
- Pair left and right separately. Sony’s PS5, PC, and Vision Pro procedures all require this.
- Check the charge and the host’s Bluetooth status. Confirm the controller is charged using the guidance in the charging section below, and confirm Bluetooth is on and discovering devices on the host.
- For Vive only, check SteamVR’s USB status. Open SteamVR > Settings > USB and verify both wireless receivers. If a receiver is unavailable, try a different USB port.
- Use reset procedures last. Steam Support also describes USB reset and controller reset steps. Use them only after basic pairing has failed, and follow the steps on that page exactly.
Charging is separate from pairing
A controller can be paired and still have a flat battery, and charging does not establish a pairing. Sony says PS VR2 Sense controllers charge over USB, one at a time, and cannot be used while charging. A separately sold PS VR2 Sense charging station is another option. Buy a replacement USB cable only if the included cable is missing or damaged, and check that its connector matches the controller and the cable’s other end before purchase.
If you have not confirmed which of these problems you have, start with pairing mode and the host’s Bluetooth settings, then check the battery.
