To get Roku on a Vizio Smart TV, connect a Roku streaming player or Streaming Stick to an HDMI input, power it, select that HDMI input with the Vizio remote, and follow Roku’s on-screen setup. The cited setup guidance supports using an external Roku device; it does not establish installing Roku OS as a SmartCast app.
What you need before connecting Roku
- A Roku streaming player or Streaming Stick. If you already own one, you do not need to buy another. A Vizio TV may also have other streaming options.
- An available HDMI input on the TV. Check your Vizio model’s manual or product specifications for the number and location of its ports.
- Power for the Roku and an internet connection. Roku setup uses Wi-Fi, or Ethernet on some player models.
Roku says its streaming players can connect to any TV with an HDMI connection: Roku’s answer to “Do I need a special TV?” That general compatibility guidance does not establish that every Vizio model has the same ports, settings, or supported picture formats.
How to connect and set up Roku on a Vizio TV
- Find an open HDMI port. Note its number—such as HDMI 1—so you can choose the same input on the TV. Vizio’s specifications for the V4K65M-0804 list three HDMI inputs; that is an example, not a specification for every Vizio model. See the V4K65M-0804 product information or check your own TV’s manual.
- Connect the Roku to HDMI. Plug a Streaming Stick directly into the TV, or connect a player using its supplied HDMI cable. Roku recommends using the cable included with the device. If you need a replacement, Roku specifies a High Speed HDMI cable for TVs limited to 720p or 1080p and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/HDR TVs. Check the TV and Roku specifications before choosing a cable.
- Connect Roku to power. Use the supplied USB cable for a Streaming Stick. Some TV USB ports may not supply enough power; if Roku displays a low-power warning, connect the supplied power adapter to a wall outlet.
- Select the Roku input on the Vizio. Turn on the TV, press Input or Source on the Vizio remote, and choose the HDMI number used by Roku. Roku says to allow about 10 seconds for the device to be detected.
- Complete Roku’s on-screen setup. Follow the prompts to pair the Roku remote and choose a language. Connect to Wi-Fi, or to Ethernet if your player supports it, then allow Roku to install any updates. Choose display settings and follow the activation instructions on screen. Getting 4K or HDR on a Vizio TV
4K and HDR require compatible Roku hardware, a compatible Vizio TV and input, and compatible equipment in the connection path, such as a receiver or soundbar. If picture quality is below the expected resolution or HDR is unavailable, confirm that each device and the selected HDMI input support the format. Roku’s guidance for some Vizio 4K setups gives this path: Menu > Input Settings > select the Roku input > Full HD Color > On. The Roku welcome screen does not appear
- Check that Roku has power and that the HDMI plug or cable is firmly seated.
- Use the Vizio remote to select the specific HDMI input Roku occupies, rather than another connected device’s input.
- Allow about 10 seconds after selecting the input for detection.
Roku reports low power or keeps restarting
A TV USB port may not supply enough power. Connect Roku using its supplied wall adapter and plug the adapter into an outlet.

Wi-Fi setup fails
Confirm that you selected the intended network and entered its case-sensitive password correctly. If the connection still fails, Roku’s setup guidance suggests restarting the router and Roku player before trying again.
The remote does not control TV power or volume
Roku remote control of TV functions is optional and varies by remote and television. Some TV and remote combinations may support volume control but not power, or power but not volume; that does not necessarily prevent the Roku player from streaming.

Which Roku device or cable should you use?
Choose between a player and a stick based on the Roku device you have and the TV’s available HDMI connection, power options, and supported resolution. Check the Roku model’s specifications and your Vizio manual for compatibility rather than assuming every Roku device supports the same picture formats. The included HDMI cable is the default choice when supplied; buy a replacement only if it is missing or unsuitable for the resolution and HDR features you plan to use.
