Connect n8n to Buffer with n8n’s MCP Client node: give it Buffer’s MCP endpoint, https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp, and authenticate with a Buffer API key using Bearer Auth. You can then choose a Buffer tool and build workflows that create drafts or handle other documented API actions. Buffer’s setup guide, checked October 7, 2026, describes the connection for both n8n Cloud and self-hosted n8n.
What you need before connecting
- An n8n account, either n8n Cloud or a self-hosted instance.
- A Buffer account and API key. Buffer says API access is included on every current plan, including Free, although plan limits vary. See Buffer’s API access and limitations guide.
- A workflow trigger, such as an RSS feed or form submission, if you want the connection to run automatically.
Buffer’s API is a GraphQL API for connecting to a user’s own Buffer account. It is separate from Buffer’s older legacy API and from the APIs provided directly by social networks. The MCP connection is the simplest documented n8n route; use a custom GraphQL integration if you need custom API queries or application behavior.
Connect n8n to Buffer with MCP
- Get an API key. In Buffer, open the API settings and generate or copy an API key. Keep it private: it grants authenticated access to the Buffer account.
- Add the client node. In your n8n workflow, add an MCP Client node.
- Configure the server. Set Server Transport to HTTP Streamable and enter
https://mcp.buffer.com/mcpin MCP Endpoint URL. - Set authentication. Choose Bearer Auth, create the credential, enter the Buffer API key, and save it.
- Choose a Buffer tool. Select the MCP tool that matches what the workflow needs to do, then configure its inputs.
- Connect the workflow. Add a trigger and any required data transformations, filters, or approval steps before the Buffer node. Run a controlled test with suitable content before enabling an automated workflow.
These node labels and connection details are from Buffer’s n8n integration guide, checked October 7, 2026. If a label changes in a later n8n release, use the corresponding MCP client, transport, endpoint, and bearer credential settings.
What you can automate
Buffer’s guide illustrates workflows that create a draft from a new RSS item, create a draft from form-submission content, and send a Slack summary of the following week’s scheduled posts each Friday. These are examples of possible workflow patterns, not a guarantee that a particular setup has been tested in your account.
#1 Best Overall
For example, an RSS-to-draft flow can take the feed item’s title and link, apply any filtering or text-generation steps you want, and pass the resulting content to the relevant Buffer tool. Keeping the result as a draft gives someone a chance to review it before publication. A form-based flow can follow the same pattern, while a scheduled workflow can retrieve information supported by the selected Buffer tool and pass a summary to Slack.
Buffer documents API actions including creating and deleting posts, creating ideas, and retrieving channels, posts, and organization data. Consult the Buffer developer documentation for the current API capabilities and requirements before designing a workflow around a particular action.
Which social channels does the API cover?
Buffer’s current API Help Center list names 11 social channels for API post creation. This count reflects the channels in that list, not every destination available in Buffer’s dashboard.

The list and limitations are documented in Buffer’s API access and limitations guide. Check that guide for current channel availability rather than assuming that every dashboard feature is exposed to API workflows.

Important API limits and workflow design choices
Analytics and comments
Do not build production reporting around Buffer API metrics: Buffer describes post-metrics queries as experimental and unsuitable for reliable production reporting. Reading or replying to comments is not supported through the API.
Media links
The API does not accept native media uploads. If a post needs media, provide a public URL, and make sure the media remains accessible until the scheduled post publishes. A temporary or access-restricted link can fail when Buffer attempts to publish.
Rank #4
Approval-required channels
API-created posts follow each channel’s permissions. When a channel requires approval, Buffer saves the post as a draft awaiting approval rather than publishing it automatically.

- Choose MCP Client for a visual n8n workflow built around triggers, transformations, filters, and the Buffer actions exposed through its tools.
- Consider a custom GraphQL integration when the workflow needs custom queries or application behavior beyond the documented MCP tool path.
- Keep a human review step where content approval is required or desirable; an automated workflow does not override channel permissions.
- Choose another reporting or engagement route if reliable analytics or comment management is central, because those capabilities are not supported reliably or at all through this API.
