To automate missed calls with n8n, connect a phone number through a provider that can send call-status webhooks. In the documented Twilio setup, the number sends call events to an active n8n Webhook workflow; the workflow filters for unanswered inbound calls, then sends the caller an SMS. You can also log the call or alert the business owner.
What connects the phone number to n8n?
The phone provider—not the n8n Twilio node—delivers call events to your workflow. The provider’s callback must point to an externally reachable n8n webhook. The n8n Twilio node is used here to send the text message after the workflow receives and filters a call event. See n8n’s Webhook documentation and n8n’s Twilio node documentation.
The example below uses Twilio because n8n publishes a missed-call workflow for that provider. It is a configuration pattern, not a claim that every phone number or country supports the same voice and SMS features. Check the capabilities of your number and account before building the workflow.
Set up the missed-call workflow

Confirm the number can receive calls and send SMS
Choose a number and provider that support the inbound call-status behavior and outbound SMS your workflow needs. Number availability and capabilities vary by location; confirm eligibility with your provider for your country and account.

Create an n8n Webhook trigger
Add a Webhook trigger to a workflow and configure it to accept an HTTP POST request. For the documented Twilio pattern, the endpoint path is
/missed-call. Activate the workflow and use its production webhook URL so the provider can reach it. n8n describes webhooks as a way for external services to trigger workflows. -
Point Twilio call-status changes to the production URL
In the Twilio number configuration, set the “Call status changes” webhook to the workflow’s production URL, including the
/missed-callendpoint, and select HTTP POST. Twilio supports call-status callbacks for events includinginitiated,ringing,answered, andcompleted; its default callback is sent when a call completes. The exact callback options and interface may change, so check Twilio’s call-status callback documentation.Rank #2

Filter for missed inbound calls
Inspect the incoming event and continue only when it represents an inbound call that was not answered. The n8n template checks missed-call statuses such as
no-answer,busy, andfailed, while excluding answered and outbound calls. Confirm the status values and payload fields delivered by your integration, then implement the filter in n8n so other call events do not trigger an unwanted text.PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Send the caller an SMS
Add the Twilio node and use its message-sending operation to text the caller. The node also documents MMS and WhatsApp messaging, as well as text-to-speech calls; for the missed-call reply, use SMS and ensure the sending number supports it. Write copy that identifies the business and gives a useful next step, such as inviting the caller to reply or call again.

If you want different replies during and outside business hours, configure the business’s opening days, hours, and timezone explicitly. The published template supports distinct business-hours and after-hours message copy, but your schedule and wording must reflect the business accurately.

Optionally log the event or notify the owner
The published n8n workflow also appends call details to Google Sheets and sends an owner email through Gmail. These are optional branches: remove them if they are unnecessary, or replace them with the logging and notification services your business uses.

Secure and test the callback
Twilio’s Voice Webhooks documentation says: “Use HTTPS for your webhook endpoint and verify that Twilio sent the request.” Apply both parts: use the HTTPS production URL and validate that the incoming request is genuinely from Twilio before acting on it. See Twilio’s webhook security guidance.

Choosing a different phone provider
Twilio is the provider documented in the n8n example; the available sources do not establish a head-to-head comparison with other providers. Before choosing an alternative, confirm these operational requirements for your country and account:
- The number can send call-status events to an externally reachable HTTPS URL.
- The number and account can send the SMS your workflow needs.
- The provider’s status values let you distinguish unanswered, busy, failed, and answered calls, and identify inbound versus outbound calls.
- The provider explains how to authenticate callback requests and how webhook delivery behaves.
Do not assume another provider uses Twilio’s callback fields, status names, or number capabilities. Adapt the webhook and filter to that provider’s documented payload.
