You can connect a Meta Quest or Meta Quest 2 to a Windows gaming PC in two ways: with a USB cable through Meta Horizon Link, or wirelessly through Air Link. The current PC software is called Meta Horizon Link; older guides may still call it the Oculus PC app or Oculus desktop app.

For the most reliable connection, use wired Link with a high-quality USB 3 cable. Air Link is more convenient, but it depends heavily on your Wi-Fi setup, router position, and network congestion.

What you need

Connection Required hardware Best use
Wired Link Windows PC, Meta Horizon Link, and a Meta Quest Link Cable or similar high-quality USB 3 cable Lowest network dependency and generally the easiest way to troubleshoot PCVR
Air Link Windows PC, Meta Horizon Link, and a suitable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network Playing without a cable attached to the headset

Install the Meta Horizon Link App from Meta’s official Quest setup page before attempting either connection. The PC should have at least 9 GB of free storage; insufficient disk space can prevent the app from downloading or installing.

The Meta Horizon mobile app is separate. It is used for initial Quest 2 device setup with a compatible smartphone. It does not provide the PCVR connection. Meta Horizon Link handles the PC connection, while Air Link handles the wireless transport.

  • Comfortable & Secure Design: The L-shaped USB-C connector reduces headset port strain and improves comfort during long VR sessions. Includes a Velcro strap to keep the cable in place and prevent disconnection. Flexible, tangle-free design allows smooth, unrestricted movement.

Option 1: Connect Quest or Quest 2 with a USB cable

1. Install Meta Horizon Link

  1. On the Windows gaming PC, open Meta’s Quest setup page.
  2. Download and install the Meta Horizon Link App.
  3. Open Meta Horizon Link and sign in with the Meta account used by the headset.

Do not rely on the phone app for this step. The desktop app must be installed on the computer that will run the PCVR games.

2. Disable Air Link if it is enabled

If the headset has previously been configured for Air Link, turn Air Link off before setting up a wired connection. Meta recommends disabling Air Link when using wired Link, which prevents the two connection modes from competing.

3. Connect the headset

  1. Plug the cable into a USB port on the PC.
  2. Connect the other end to the USB-C port on the Quest or Quest 2.
  3. Put on the headset and follow any connection prompt that appears.
  4. In Meta Horizon Link, check whether the headset appears under Devices.

You do not need Meta’s official cable specifically. A similar, high-quality USB 3 cable can work. However, a cable that only supports USB 2, or a USB-C cable designed only for charging, may not provide a usable Link connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the cable is not detected or shows as USB 2

USB-C describes the connector shape, not automatically the data speed. A USB-C connection can still be limited to USB 2.

  1. Try a different USB port on the PC, preferably a port connected directly to the motherboard.
  2. Try another known-good USB 3 cable.
  3. If you are using a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter, confirm that the adapter supports USB 3.
  4. Try reversing the USB-C connector in the adapter. Some adapters support USB 3 in only one orientation.
  5. Reseat a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and test it in different orientations.
  6. If you use a PCI-E USB expansion card, check that its internal power and motherboard cables are fully inserted.

USB cable compatibility and USB port compatibility are common causes of wired Link failures. Test the simplest arrangement possible: one suitable cable connected directly to the PC, without an unverified hub or adapter.

Option 2: Connect Quest or Quest 2 with Air Link

Air Link sends the PCVR connection over the local network. It does not require the headset and PC to use the same internet service account, but they must be on the same local network.

Prepare the network

  • Connect the headset to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band rather than 2.4 GHz.
  • Connect the gaming PC to the router with an Ethernet cable whenever possible.
  • If the router supports it, use an 80 MHz channel width on the 5 GHz band.
  • Keep the headset near the router, ideally in the same room with a clear line of sight.
  • Reduce the number of network devices or wireless hops between the PC and headset.

A 5 GHz connection alone does not guarantee smooth Air Link. Wireless interference, congestion, signal strength, latency, and the PC’s own network connection can still cause frame drops or disconnections. A dedicated router can help if your normal home network is busy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect through the headset

  1. Open Meta Horizon Link on the Windows PC.
  2. Confirm that the PC and headset are connected to the same local network.
  3. Put on the headset.
  4. Press the Meta button on the right Touch controller to open the universal menu.
  5. Hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu until Quick Settings appears, then select it.
  6. Select Link.
  7. Select the computer when it appears in the list.
  8. Choose Launch or the available connection option to enter the PCVR environment.

If the computer does not appear, confirm that Meta Horizon Link is open and that both devices are on the same network. Then toggle Air Link off and on again from the Link screen.

Check Air Link connection quality

From the headset’s Link screen, select the computer and then select Troubleshoot. The headset displays connection metrics that can help identify a weak or unstable wireless link.

Adjust PCVR graphics settings

If the headset connects but games stutter, the connection itself may be working correctly while the PC is struggling to render or encode the image.

  1. Open Meta Horizon Link on the PC.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Select the Active headset.
  4. Scroll to Graphics Preferences.
  5. Adjust Refresh Rate and Render Resolution.

Meta lists refresh-rate choices of 72 Hz, 80 Hz, 90 Hz, and 120 Hz. The usable choice depends on the headset, graphics card, game, and current software state. Higher refresh rates and render resolutions increase the PC’s workload and can cause dropped frames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented graphics interface lists a maximum render resolution of 5408 × 2736. That is an available setting, not a recommendation for every PC. Start with the default settings, then increase quality gradually if performance remains stable.

Why is my Quest Link cable detected as USB 2?

Possible causes include a USB 2 cable or port, an adapter that does not support USB 3, an adapter that supports USB 3 in only one orientation, a loose USB-C connection, or incorrectly connected PCI-E USB-card cabling.
