To watch Jellyfin on a TV, install a compatible client app, connect it to an address your Jellyfin server can reach, then sign in. Android TV and Fire TV have an official Jellyfin app; Apple TV has third-party client options, including Infuse and Swiftfin. The exact app and playback experience depend on your device and media formats.
Before you connect a TV to Jellyfin
Jellyfin uses a client app on your TV or streaming device to connect to your Jellyfin Server. The client needs a configurable server address and a network path to that server. Start with Jellyfin’s client directory if you need to check available apps.
- Make sure Jellyfin Server is running and note its reachable address and configured port. On a home network, this is commonly the server computer’s local network address, but use the actual address and port configured for your server.
- Connect the TV or streaming device to a network that can reach the server. If you are away from home, your server must already be reachable through your remote-access setup; Jellyfin does not provide automatic access simply because you install a TV app.
- If your server uses a BaseURL, include it in the address entered by the client. Jellyfin’s networking guidance specifically calls this out for Android TV’s Host setting: Jellyfin networking.
Connect Jellyfin on Android TV or Fire TV
Jellyfin lists Jellyfin for Android TV as an official open-source app for Android TV and Fire TV. The official download directory links to Google Play, F-Droid, and Amazon Appstore distribution: Jellyfin downloads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the app store available on your TV or Fire TV device and install Jellyfin for Android TV.
- Open the app and add the server. Enter its reachable address, including the configured port and any BaseURL, if applicable.
- Sign in with your Jellyfin account. If Quick Connect is offered, you can use it instead of entering your credentials with the remote.
A separate streaming device is optional: you can use the app on a compatible TV, or connect a Fire TV streaming device if your television needs a client device. The official listing establishes Fire TV support, but not compatibility for every individual hardware model.

Connect Jellyfin on Apple TV
Apple TV requires a tvOS client that supports Jellyfin. Jellyfin’s download directory lists Infuse as a third-party proprietary tvOS client, not an official Jellyfin app. The Quick Connect documentation also lists Swiftfin (tvOS) as a supported client for that sign-in method.
- Choose a Jellyfin-compatible tvOS client and install it from the platform store.
- In the client, add your server using its reachable address. Follow that app’s current prompts to sign in; the steps can differ between clients.
- If you use Swiftfin and want to avoid typing a password with the remote, you can use Quick Connect when it is enabled on the server.
Check the current store listing for availability, features, and any purchase requirements. Jellyfin’s sources do not establish a current price comparison or a single best Apple TV client.

Sign in with Quick Connect
Quick Connect lets you authorize a TV client from a device where you are already signed in, instead of entering a username and password on the TV. Jellyfin says the feature is enabled by default, but a server administrator can disable it in the server Dashboard’s General tab. Its supported-client table lists Android TV and Swiftfin (tvOS) for Quick Connect login: Quick Connect documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
- On the TV client, choose Quick Connect. Some clients place it after Manual Login.
- Keep the displayed six-character code on screen.
- On a device already logged in to Jellyfin, open Settings > Quick Connect, enter the code, and confirm authorization.
- After authorization succeeds, the TV client logs in. If the code is invalid or has expired, start again and authorize a new one.
Fix connection and playback problems
The app cannot find the server
Enter the server address manually and check that both devices have network reachability. Local client discovery is a separate mechanism; a discovery problem does not by itself mean a manual connection will fail. See Jellyfin’s networking guidance.

The app rejects the address
Check that you used the server’s actual configured port and included its BaseURL, if one is set. The BaseURL belongs in the address the Android TV client uses for its Host setting.
Sign-in is difficult with the remote
Use Quick Connect if the client supports it and the server administrator has left the feature enabled. The supported-client list includes Android TV and Swiftfin for tvOS; do not assume every Jellyfin client offers the same sign-in option.

Video buffers or the server transcodes
A successful connection does not mean every file can play directly. Direct Play depends on the client and device supporting the file’s video, audio, container, and subtitle formats. When they are incompatible, Jellyfin may remux or transcode the media. Subtitle burn-in can require intensive video transcoding. Check Jellyfin’s codec support documentation for the relevant format details.
HDR playback fails or looks wrong
HDR support depends on both the playback device and the source format. Jellyfin’s codec guidance limits its Android TV HDR support statement to HDR-capable devices running the official Android TV app; it is not a guarantee for every TV or streaming box.

Which TV route should you choose?
| Route | Client status in Jellyfin’s listings | Quick Connect | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android TV | Official Jellyfin for Android TV app | Listed as supported | Reachable server address, BaseURL if configured, and media-format support |
| Fire TV | Official Jellyfin for Android TV app listing includes Fire TV | See the client’s sign-in options | Confirm that the particular device can run the app and supports your media formats |

| Apple TV with Swiftfin | tvOS client listed in Jellyfin’s Quick Connect table | Listed for login | Check current availability and media-format support for your device and files |
The practical choice depends on whether an app is available for your TV’s operating system, whether it is an official or third-party client, whether it supports the sign-in method you want, and whether the device handles your media formats. Jellyfin describes its clients as the apps and devices that connect to a server and let you view your content on supported devices: Jellyfin documentation.
