To connect Java to a relational database with JDBC, add that database vendor’s JDBC driver, obtain a connection using a vendor-specific URL or a configured DataSource, execute SQL, process any results, and close JDBC resources. Use PreparedStatement parameters for changing data values rather than concatenating them into SQL. For a deployed application, Java’s current API identifies DataSource as the preferred connection approach.

How JDBC connects a Java application to a database

JDBC is Java’s standard API for working with data sources. Its core workflow uses a Connection to represent a database connection, a statement object to send SQL, and a ResultSet to read rows returned by a query. The Java API specifies that workflow; the driver and connection configuration come from the database vendor.

Before writing connection code, choose the database and consult its current JDBC driver documentation. You will need a Java SDK, the database or access to a database server, and that vendor’s JDBC driver. Driver coordinates, authentication, TLS, and URL syntax vary, so there is no universal JDBC dependency or connection string. Oracle’s older JDBC tutorial outlines the setup conceptually, but notes that its examples were written for JDK 8 and may omit later improvements: JDBC Basics.

Choose how the application obtains a connection

Approach Best fit Configuration and pooling
DriverManager A small introductory program or a simple standalone utility. The application calls getConnection with connection details. Pooling is not provided merely by choosing this API.
DataSource Deployed applications, especially those managed by a server or framework. A configured implementation supplies connections; it may provide pooling or distributed-transaction support. Those capabilities depend on the implementation and environment.

The Java SE 25 DriverManager API calls DataSource the preferred means of connecting to a data source. A basic DataSource need not pool connections; pooling-capable and distributed-transaction implementations are distinct options. Distributed transactions are not required for ordinary work against one database. See the Java SE 25 DriverManager API and Oracle’s DataSource tutorial.

Connect with DriverManager in a small example

The following example uses MySQL Connector/J’s URL pattern solely as an example. The URL is MySQL-specific, not a template to reuse unchanged with another database. Confirm the current syntax, driver dependency, and supported authentication options in the MySQL Connector/J URL documentation.

String url = "jdbc:mysql://db.example.com:3306/appdb";
String user = System.getenv("DB_USER");
String password = System.getenv("DB_PASSWORD");

try (Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, password)) {
    // Run database work using this connection.
}

Supply credentials through an environment or secrets-management configuration rather than committing them to source control. Avoid embedding secrets in a URL that may be logged. The Java API also documents overloads that accept properties; if a property is specified both in the URL and separately, precedence is implementation-defined. Keep each setting in one place and follow the chosen driver’s guidance.

JDBC 4.0 drivers available on the classpath are loaded automatically. Explicitly calling Class.forName is therefore not a required step for a modern JDBC driver, though older drivers may have different requirements. Oracle’s tutorial illustrates MySQL Connector/J’s pattern as jdbc:mysql://[host][:port]/[database]; it cites 127.0.0.1 and 3306 as tutorial defaults, which should not be assumed for every installation or current configuration. See the Oracle connection tutorial.

Run queries with statements and process results

Use Statement for fixed SQL with no changing values. When values vary or a statement may be reused, use PreparedStatement and bind each value with the setter that matches its type. Placeholders represent data values, not SQL structure such as a table name or sort direction.

String sql = "SELECT id, name FROM customers WHERE email = ?";

try (Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, password);
     PreparedStatement statement = connection.prepareStatement(sql)) {
    statement.setString(1, email);

    try (ResultSet results = statement.executeQuery()) {
        while (results.next()) {
            long id = results.getLong("id");
            String name = results.getString("name");
            System.out.println(id + ": " + name);
        }
    }
}

The question mark is bound to email using the first parameter index, 1. This keeps the supplied value separate from SQL syntax. Oracle’s tutorial explains that prepared statements treat client-supplied data as parameter content rather than part of the SQL statement: Using Prepared Statements.

For a query that changes rows, use an appropriate update method such as executeUpdate; for a query that returns rows, use executeQuery. Let the statement type and execution method match the SQL operation, and inspect the database driver’s documentation for vendor-specific behavior.

Close connections, statements, and result sets

Use try-with-resources for JDBC objects that implement AutoCloseable. Each declared resource is closed when its block exits, including when an exception occurs; nested resources close in reverse declaration order. This prevents forgotten statements and result sets from retaining resources. Oracle’s Database 21 JDBC guide warns that failing to close statements and result sets can cause memory leaks or exhaust database cursors: Oracle Database JDBC Developer’s Guide.

Group related changes in a transaction

When several database operations must succeed or fail together, perform them in one transaction. JDBC connections use auto-commit by default in the usual configuration, so disable it before the group of operations, commit only after all succeed, and roll back if an operation fails. Restore the original auto-commit setting if the connection will continue to be used.

boolean originalAutoCommit = connection.getAutoCommit();
try {
    connection.setAutoCommit(false);
    // Execute related updates here.
    connection.commit();
} catch (SQLException e) {
    connection.rollback();
    throw e;
} finally {
    connection.setAutoCommit(originalAutoCommit);
}

In production code, account for failures during rollback or restoring connection state, and ensure the connection is closed or returned to the pool in a known state. The JDBC tutorial’s transaction lesson covers the transaction workflow: Managing Transactions.

Use a DataSource and pooling in deployed applications

In a server-side application, a container, framework, or pooling library commonly configures a DataSource with the driver and connection settings. Application code requests a connection from that source and uses the same statement and resource-management workflow; pooling does not change how SQL parameters work. The pool can reuse connections instead of opening a new physical connection for every database access. Whether pooling is useful, and how it should be sized and configured, depends on workload and hosting setup.

Do not select a pool or distributed-transaction implementation solely because JDBC supports those options. Use the integration already supported by the hosting environment, and consult its documentation for pool lifecycle, timeouts, validation, credentials, and transaction configuration.
