IFTTT and Buffer have an active integration: an IFTTT Applet can send content to a Buffer channel’s queue, publish it immediately, schedule it for a chosen date and time, or respond to Buffer publishing success and failure events. To connect them, choose a source trigger, connect the right Buffer account, select a channel and action, then enable the Applet. The best action depends on whether Buffer should choose the posting time or you want to publish at a specific time.

What the IFTTT and Buffer integration can do

Buffer’s integration page says, “IFTTT connects Buffer to hundreds of apps and devices using simple one-step automations.” In practice, IFTTT Applets connect an event in one service to an action in another. A source event might be a new blog post, a saved bookmark or an uploaded photo; Buffer can then handle the social-posting step. The source still needs to provide content suitable for the destination, and the integration does not guarantee that a social network will accept every post. Buffer’s IFTTT integration page describes the connection.

IFTTT lists two Buffer triggers and three Buffer actions. Triggers let an Applet react to a Buffer publishing result; actions let an Applet send content to Buffer. IFTTT’s Buffer service page lists the available options:

Type Option What it does
Trigger A post is successfully sent to its social network Starts an Applet after Buffer reports a successful send.
Trigger A scheduled post fails to publish Starts an Applet when a scheduled Buffer post fails.
Action Add a post to the Buffer queue Adds content to the selected channel’s queue, which follows that channel’s posting schedule.
Action Share a post immediately Publishes immediately rather than adding the post to the queue.
Action Schedule a post Schedules the post for a date and time you specify.

Choose the right Buffer action

Queue a post for Buffer’s schedule

Choose the queue action when you want Buffer to use the selected channel’s posting schedule. This is useful when the source event should add content to your regular publishing flow without choosing a separate date and time for each post.

Publish immediately

Choose immediate sharing when the post should go out as soon as the Applet runs. It bypasses the Buffer queue, so it is not the same as adding a post for the next available slot.

Set a date and time

Choose scheduled publishing when you need to specify when Buffer should publish a particular post. This is distinct from queueing, where the selected channel’s schedule determines the posting slot.

How to connect IFTTT to Buffer

Buffer’s documented setup uses an IFTTT account and an Applet. IFTTT’s interface and labels can change, but the essential choices are the source event, Buffer account, destination channel and Buffer action. Buffer’s setup instructions direct users to its IFTTT service page to browse or create an Applet.

  1. Choose the source event. Decide what should start the automation, such as a newly published blog post, a bookmark or an uploaded photo. Check that the source provides the fields or content the Buffer action needs.
  2. Open the Buffer service in IFTTT. Browse an existing Applet or create one that uses Buffer as an action or trigger service.
  3. Connect the intended Buffer account. When prompted, authorize the account that owns the destination channel. If more than one account is available, check the selection carefully.
  4. Select the destination channel. Choose the social account where the post should go. A Buffer channel represents one connected social account, and IFTTT says posts are queued to one channel at a time. See IFTTT’s Buffer service page for its listed destinations.
  5. Configure the Buffer action. Select queue, immediate sharing or scheduled publishing, then fill in any required post content or timing fields.
  6. Enable the Applet. Turn it on and confirm that IFTTT shows it as enabled. If the Applet does not run as expected, check its source trigger, account authorization, chosen channel and enabled status.

Which social channels can you use?

IFTTT’s Buffer service page lists X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Pinterest, YouTube and Google Business Profile among Buffer’s supported destinations. Availability for a particular account depends on the channels actually connected and available in that user’s Buffer and IFTTT setup. Verify the intended channel and permissions while configuring the Applet rather than assuming every listed destination is enabled for every account. The IFTTT Buffer page provides the service’s current destination list.

How often does IFTTT check Buffer triggers?

IFTTT states that Buffer polling triggers are checked every five minutes for Pro and Pro+ users and every hour for Free users. These are the stated polling-check intervals, not guaranteed post-delivery times: a check interval does not promise that a social post will appear within exactly five minutes or one hour. Buffer’s publishing schedule and the social network’s handling of a post are separate from IFTTT’s polling cadence. IFTTT lists the intervals on its Buffer service page.

When to consider Buffer’s API instead

For a custom integration or a developer-built workflow, Buffer also offers an API and identifies IFTTT alongside tools such as Zapier, Make and n8n. Buffer describes its current GraphQL API at api.buffer.com as a way to connect a Buffer account with automation tools and assistants; it is distinct from Buffer’s older API and from social networks’ own APIs. Buffer handles publishing to connected social channels. Buffer’s API Help Center article explains the API and its current scope.

The API is not simply a more powerful version of an IFTTT Applet: it is an alternative for workflows that need custom development. Buffer’s Help Center says the API does not currently provide full analytics or comment reading and replying. It also says media attached to API-created posts must be hosted at a public URL that remains reachable until publication. Those API-specific constraints should not be assumed to apply to every IFTTT Applet action.

Is the integration a good fit?

Use IFTTT with Buffer when a repeatable event in another service should add or publish content through a connected Buffer channel, and the available trigger and action match the workflow. Before enabling an Applet, confirm which event starts it, whether the content is appropriate for the destination, which channel receives it, and whether you want a queue slot, immediate publishing or a specified time. If the workflow needs custom logic beyond the listed Applet options, consider whether Buffer’s API or another automation tool is a better fit.
