To connect an AI agent to Clockify, create a Clockify API key, then add Clockify’s hosted MCP server to a supported client and send the key in the x-api-key HTTP header. Clockify documents setup examples for Claude CLI, Codex CLI, and Gemini CLI. The agent operates with the Clockify permissions of the account that owns the key.
Before you connect: create a Clockify API key
- Sign in to Clockify.
- Open your profile menu and select Preferences.
- Open Advanced, then choose Manage API keys.
- Select Generate New and copy the key somewhere secure.
Use the key in your client configuration in place of the example value API_KEY. It is a credential: do not paste your real key into an article, screenshot, public support post, or shared configuration. Connect Clockify MCP to Codex CLI
Clockify’s Codex CLI example adds an HTTP MCP server entry to config.toml. Use the documented endpoint and place the API key in the HTTP headers:

Connect Clockify MCP to Claude CLI
Clockify documents both an HTTP MCP server configuration and a claude mcp add command for Claude CLI. Follow the Claude-specific example in the Clockify setup guide, using the hosted endpoint and the x-api-key header. Do not copy the Codex TOML syntax into Claude’s configuration; each client expects its own format.
Connect Clockify MCP to Gemini CLI
For Gemini CLI, Clockify’s example uses an httpUrl and headers in settings.json; the guide also documents a command-line option. Use the Gemini-specific example in the official guide and set the API key as the x-api-key header value.

Using Clockify data regions
If your Clockify account uses a specific data region, such as the EU, Clockify’s guide says to add a region header. Its example uses the exact value EU. Follow the guide’s client-specific header syntax so the region header is included alongside the API-key header.
What an AI agent can do with Clockify
Clockify describes use cases including starting and stopping timers, logging past time, updating time entries, and working with reports or timesheets. The exact tools available can change, so consult Clockify’s current tool list rather than assuming this list is exhaustive.

Access is governed by the key owner’s existing Clockify permissions. Clockify says an agent inherits those permissions and can access data or log time only for projects that user can access. If an action is unavailable, first check the account’s Clockify role and project access.

Clockify’s hosted service and community-built servers are separate implementations. Clockify’s official guide documents its hosted endpoint and inherited account permissions. The tracegazer/clockify-mcp project README describes a locally installed server with its own access modes and security considerations; those controls should not be assumed to apply to Clockify’s hosted server.

Local server installation and access modes
The community project README documents installation through pip install clockify-mcp, uvx clockify-mcp, or a container, with a Clockify API key supplied as configuration. Its default read mode is read-only; enabling time-tracking or full allows write operations. In write-enabled modes, an agent using the credential can create, modify, or delete real Clockify data, and deletions may be irreversible.
Local server network security
The project README says its SSE and streamable HTTP transports have no built-in authentication. It recommends limiting them to loopback or placing them behind an authenticated reverse proxy. These are warnings for that community implementation, not documented properties of Clockify’s hosted MCP endpoint.
