Figma documents an official MCP server for Claude Code, with a remote setup it recommends for most users and a desktop alternative. Shopify also documents connecting Claude and other third-party AI tools to a store, but its documentation does not establish that Shopify’s connector is an MCP server. Here’s how the integrations differ and how to set them up.
What “Claude MCP,” “Figma MCP,” and “Shopify MCP” mean here
Figma provides a documented Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that can supply design context to AI agents and support workflows between code and canvas. Shopify’s documentation describes a separate connection between a store and third-party AI tools, including Claude. It describes store and product workflows, but does not call that connection an MCP server.
That distinction matters: the Figma instructions below are for Figma’s official MCP server in Claude Code. For Shopify, follow Shopify’s documented AI-tool connection and review its permissions; don’t assume that another project called a Shopify MCP server is the same product or is maintained by Shopify.

How to connect Claude Code to Figma MCP
Recommended: install Figma’s Claude Code plugin
- In Claude Code, install Figma’s official plugin by running
claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official. - If Claude Code was already running, restart it so the new plugin is loaded.
- Open the plugin marketplace in Claude Code and select the installed Figma server.
- When prompted, authorize access to your Figma account in the browser.
- Check the installed plugin or server status in Claude Code to confirm it is available.
Installing the plugin configures the connection; it does not replace the account-authorization step. See Figma’s Claude Code setup instructions and remote-server documentation for the official flow.

Figma’s developer documentation also describes user-scope configuration when you want the server available across projects. You still need to authorize your Figma account. Use Figma’s remote installation guide for the configuration details.
Desktop server alternative
Figma also documents a local server through the Figma desktop app. Its Claude Code setup flow gives the endpoint http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp. This is an alternative for workflows where you want the desktop server; the Figma app must be available for that local connection. Figma recommends the remote server for most users and says it offers broader features.

Figma documents the remote and desktop options in its Claude Code setup guide. It does not provide a performance comparison there, so choose based on the workflow and connection type you need rather than an assumed speed or security difference.
Can Claude read or edit Figma files?
Figma’s MCP Catalog lists Claude support for Figma Design, Figma Make, FigJam, and Figma Weave, and lists remote and local servers with read/write access. That describes the catalog’s listed support; it does not guarantee that every client, server configuration, or task exposes identical tools or actions. Check the current Figma MCP Catalog and the capabilities available in your configured Claude Code connection.

For work involving edits, treat write access as a reason to review the requested action and its effect on the file before approving it. Connecting Claude to Figma supplies a workflow; it does not mean every change is automatic or that every Figma surface behaves the same way.

Shopify documents connecting third-party AI tools, including Claude, to a store the reader owns. Shopify says its Claude connector can build a store from a storefront preview, help manage an owned store, and source products from Shopify Collective suppliers for import. These are Shopify’s documented connector capabilities; they should not be presented as proof that the connector is a native MCP server.

Use Shopify’s instructions for connecting AI tools to a store. Before connecting, review what store data will be shared and what the tool can change. If you encounter a separate Shopify MCP implementation, assess it separately: identify who maintains it, what permissions it requests, and which actions it can perform rather than assuming Shopify documents or endorses it.
What the “12 sections” and “3.5 hours” claim establishes
The official Figma and Shopify documentation cited here does not substantiate a 12-section workflow or a 3.5-hour duration. Those figures should be treated as an individual creator’s description unless that creator provides the underlying timing and section breakdown; they are not established setup requirements or a verified completion time.
