A wired Xbox 360 controller normally works through its USB cable. A wireless Xbox 360 controller needs a separate Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows; it does not connect through the PC’s ordinary Bluetooth pairing screen. The receiver and controller must also be synchronized before Windows can use the controller.

Windows usually installs the required driver automatically. If the controller or receiver does not appear, use Windows 11’s device-add screen, Windows Update, and Device Manager in that order.

Before you start

Controller type What you need
Wired Xbox 360 controller Its USB cable and an available USB port
Wireless Xbox 360 controller An Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows and two AA batteries or a charged battery pack

Do not confuse an Xbox 360 wireless receiver with the newer Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. They are different accessories, and drivers intended for one should not automatically be assumed to support the other. An Xbox 360 wireless controller also cannot be added using the PC’s normal Bluetooth settings.

Connect a wired Xbox 360 controller

  1. Plug the controller’s USB connector directly into the Windows 11 PC. Avoid an unpowered USB hub during setup.
  2. Wait several seconds. Windows should detect the controller and install a driver automatically.
  3. Press the Xbox button on the controller. If one or more lights remain lit around the button, Windows has detected the controller.
  4. Open a game that supports an Xbox controller and test the controls. If the game does not respond, check its controller or input settings rather than assuming the USB connection has failed.

If the controller was already connected but stopped responding, unplug it, wait briefly for Windows to unload the device driver, and reconnect it. Try a different USB port as well.

Connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller

1. Connect the receiver

  1. Plug the Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows directly into a USB port on the PC.
  2. Wait for Windows to detect it and install a driver. If possible, avoid an unpowered USB hub.
  3. Check whether the receiver’s status light turns on. No light can indicate a damaged receiver, a USB power problem, or a failed USB port.

2. Synchronize the controller and receiver

  1. Turn on the controller by holding its Xbox button.
  2. Press the receiver’s connect button.
  3. Within a short time, press the connect button on the controller. On an Xbox 360 controller, this is the small button near the top edge.
  4. Wait for the lights to stop rotating. A single illuminated segment indicates the controller has connected.

If synchronization fails, move the controller close to the receiver, replace or recharge the batteries, and repeat the process. Keep other wireless devices away temporarily while testing.

Manually add an undetected device in Windows 11

Use this when Windows does not add the connected receiver or accessory automatically:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Select Add device.
  3. Follow the device-detection prompts that Windows displays.

This screen cannot turn a wireless Xbox 360 controller into a Bluetooth device. It is useful for an externally connected accessory that Windows has not registered correctly, but the wireless controller still requires its compatible receiver.

Install or update the receiver driver

Most hardware drivers arrive through Windows Update. First, install any pending updates:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates and restart the PC if Windows requests it.

To inspect the receiver manually:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the hardware category where Windows has placed the receiver. It may appear under a controller, network, USB, or other-device category, depending on the receiver and driver Windows detected.
  3. Right-click the receiver or an entry with a warning icon and select Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
  5. If Device Manager does not find anything, choose Search for updated drivers on Windows Update when that option is offered.

Do not install a driver from a random download site merely because its filename mentions Xbox 360. Use Windows Update or a driver supplied by the receiver’s legitimate manufacturer. Some third-party receivers are not built or labeled consistently, so their compatibility may depend on the hardware itself.

Reinstall a receiver or controller driver

Reinstallation is useful when the device appears in Device Manager but has a warning icon, repeatedly disconnects, or stopped working after a driver change.

  1. Disconnect the wired controller or wireless receiver from the PC. This prevents Windows from immediately rediscovering it while you remove the driver.
  2. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category and right-click the controller or receiver.
  4. Select Uninstall device, then confirm with Uninstall.
  5. Restart using right-click Start > Shut down or sign out > Restart.
  6. After Windows starts, reconnect the controller or receiver and allow Windows to detect it again.

If the uninstall dialog includes Delete the driver software for this device, select it only when you specifically want to remove that driver package as well. Removing the package can leave the device without a usable driver until Windows or the manufacturer supplies another one.

Make a hidden receiver visible

A previous installation can leave a disconnected or non-present receiver hidden in Device Manager.

  1. Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
  2. Select View.
  3. Turn on Show hidden devices.
  4. Look for a greyed-out controller, receiver, unknown device, or entry with a warning icon.

Do not delete unrelated devices. If you identify an old Xbox 360 receiver entry, uninstall that entry, restart Windows, and reconnect the receiver.

If the controller still does not work

Symptom What to test
No response from a wired controller Try another USB port, disconnect the hub, inspect the cable, and test the controller on another compatible PC.
Receiver has no light Use another USB port, bypass a hub, and check the receiver for cable or physical damage.
Receiver appears but the controller will not connect Replace or recharge the batteries, bring the controller close to the receiver, and repeat receiver/controller synchronization.
Device Manager shows a warning icon Run Windows Update, update the driver, or uninstall and reinstall the device.
The failure began after a Windows or driver update Open Device Manager, right-click the device, choose Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
It works on another PC but not this one Focus on this PC’s USB port, Windows driver state, pending updates, and security or system-management restrictions.

For a deeper reset, Device Manager can remove the driver package as well as the device. In the confirmation window, select Delete the driver software for this device before selecting OK. Use this cautiously. You can also remove a known package from an elevated Command Prompt with:

Check whether Windows sees the controller

After reconnecting the device, return to Device Manager and confirm that the receiver or controller no longer has a warning icon. You can then test the controller in the game that you intend to use. If the game offers multiple input modes, select its Xbox or XInput controller option.

If Windows never detects the device on any USB port, the likely causes are a damaged cable, insufficient USB power, a defective receiver or controller, or an incompatible third-party receiver. Testing the same hardware on another PC is the quickest way to separate a Windows configuration problem from hardware failure.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The steps above target Windows 11, which is the supported Windows version for a current installation.

Why is my wired Xbox 360 controller not detected?

Try a different USB port, connect it directly rather than through an unpowered hub, unplug it for a few seconds, and reconnect it. If it still fails, inspect the cable and test the controller on another PC.

Where is the receiver in Device Manager?

The exact category can vary by receiver and driver. Check the relevant controller, USB, network, and other-device categories. Select View > Show hidden devices if the receiver is not visible.

Should I download an Xbox 360 receiver driver from a third-party website?

Avoid random driver-download sites. Try Windows Update and Device Manager first. A third-party receiver may also have hardware-specific compatibility issues that a generic driver cannot fix.

What should I do if the controller stopped working after an update?

Open Device Manager, right-click the controller or receiver, select Properties > Driver, and choose Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available.

The Bottom Line

Connect a wired controller directly to USB, or connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller through a dedicated Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver and synchronize the two devices. Windows 11 normally installs the driver automatically. If it does not, use Settings > Windows Update, then Device Manager to update, reinstall, or inspect the receiver before assuming the controller has failed.
