To connect an old camcorder to a smart TV, match the camcorder’s video output to a compatible TV input. For the common yellow-video, red-and-white-audio plugs, connect them to the TV’s composite input and select that AV source. If the TV has no compatible analog input, use a powered composite-to-HDMI converter. Put the camcorder in playback or Player mode.
Check the camcorder and TV ports first
Look for the camcorder’s A/V OUT, LINE OUT, or HDMI OUT port, then check which inputs are available on the TV. A smart TV may still have analog inputs, but their availability and labeling vary by model.
- Composite A/V: Usually three RCA plugs—yellow for video and red and white for audio. The camcorder end may use a proprietary connector, so check the manual for your exact model before buying a cable. Samsung notes that some camcorder A/V cables use a proprietary camera-side connector; Sony also describes model-dependent cable arrangements. See Samsung Support and Sony Support.
- Composite TV input: Look for a yellow video jack and red/white audio jacks. On some TVs, composite video shares the green component-video Y jack, sometimes identified by a yellow ring or label. Do not assume a green jack accepts composite; confirm in the TV manual. See Panasonic’s analog-device guidance.
- HDMI: If the camcorder has HDMI OUT and the TV has an HDMI input, a direct connection may work with the appropriate cable. The connector size varies by camcorder.
If the ports do not match, identify the signal types before purchasing an adapter. A converter must accept the camcorder’s output and provide a signal the TV can use.
Connect composite A/V to a TV with composite input
- Connect the correct model-specific A/V cable to the camcorder’s A/V OUT.
- Connect the yellow plug to the TV’s composite video input, and the red and white plugs to the matching audio inputs.
- Turn on the camcorder and switch it to playback or Player mode.
- Use the TV remote’s input/source control to select the AV or Video input connected to the camcorder.
Samsung’s instructions specifically say the camcorder must be in Player mode to send a signal to the TV: Samsung Support.

Connect composite A/V to an HDMI-only TV
Use an active, powered composite RCA-to-HDMI converter when the camcorder outputs composite but the TV has no compatible analog input. The converter needs RCA inputs for the camcorder’s yellow, red, and white plugs, plus an HDMI output for the TV. It also needs power; a passive RCA cable cannot convert an analog signal to HDMI.
- Connect the camcorder’s composite plugs to the converter’s RCA inputs.
- Provide power to the converter as its instructions specify.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Turn on the camcorder in playback/Player mode and select that HDMI input on the TV.
Check the converter’s supported video standards against the camcorder’s output. It must convert composite to HDMI; an HDMI-to-AV converter works in the opposite direction and is unsuitable. Some converters advertise 720p or 1080p output, but that does not make standard-definition source footage high definition. See AVSL’s converter specifications.

Connect a camcorder that has HDMI output
If the camcorder has an HDMI OUT port, connect it to a TV HDMI input using a cable that fits the camcorder’s connector. Select that HDMI input on the TV and play the recording. Canon’s HF10/HF100 guidance describes HDMI as a digital audio/video connection and notes that the camcorder’s HDMI terminal is output only: Canon Support. Connect output to input, not two output terminals together.
When S-Video or a receiver is involved
Some camcorders and TVs support S-Video, and a VCR or AV receiver may also be part of the setup. These paths depend on the ports and signal-conversion abilities of each device. Sony lists S-Video and VCR connections among model-dependent options; receiver up-conversion affects whether an additional connection to the TV is needed. If the receiver does not pass or convert the camcorder’s signal, connect the camcorder directly to the TV or converter. See Sony Support and Sony’s receiver connection guidance.
Quick Recap

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
- Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
- Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.

Fix common connection problems
- No picture: Check that the camcorder is in playback/Player mode and that the TV is set to the input actually connected.
- Picture but no sound: Check the red and white audio plugs and make sure the TV is using the same input as the video connection.
- No matching ports: Recheck the output type on the camcorder and the inputs on the TV. Use a converter that accepts the camcorder’s signal and converts in the required direction.
- Black-and-white or unstable picture: Check whether the camcorder, converter, and TV support the same video standard, such as PAL or NTSC. Compatibility depends on the specific models.
- Poor picture quality: Analog camcorder recordings are standard definition. A converter changes the connection format, not the detail captured in the original recording. Panasonic notes that SD footage appears poorer than an HD signal on an HD television and that SD images are 4:3: Panasonic guidance.
- Still no signal through a receiver: Try connecting directly to the TV or converter if the receiver cannot pass or convert the camcorder’s format.
Choose the connection by the ports you have
