Connect the INMP441 to the ESP32’s I2S interface—not to an analog input. Wire power, ground, bit clock, word select, and microphone data; set the microphone’s L/R pin and the ESP32’s receive channel to the same side; then capture samples with an I2S API supported by your installed Arduino-ESP32 core. The GPIO numbers below are an ESP32-S3 example, not a universal pinout.

What you need to connect

  • An ESP32 board with usable GPIO pins for I2S clock, word select, and data input.
  • An INMP441 I2S microphone module.
  • Jumper wires; a breadboard is optional.
  • Arduino IDE with the ESP32 board package installed.

The INMP441 is a digital omnidirectional MEMS microphone. It sends audio as I2S data, so it does not connect like an analog microphone to an ADC pin. Espressif describes I2S as an electrical serial bus interface for connecting digital audio devices; see Arduino-ESP32 I2S documentation.

Wire the INMP441 to the ESP32

Use this mapping as a starting point. Random Nerd Tutorials’ ESP32-S3 example uses the GPIO assignments shown; choose suitable, available GPIOs for your own board and adjust the sketch accordingly. Board pin availability and restrictions vary.

INMP441 pin ESP32-S3 example Purpose
VDD 3V3 Microphone power
GND GND Common ground
SCK GPIO 42 I2S bit clock (BCLK)
WS GPIO 40 I2S word select (WS/LRCLK)
SD GPIO 41 Microphone serial data output to ESP32 data input (DIN)
L/R GND Selects left channel

Connect the microphone’s SD output to the ESP32’s I2S receive/data-input line, not its data output. The Arduino-ESP32 setPins API labels the lines BCLK, WS, DOUT, and DIN: for a microphone, its data is received on DIN. Check your module’s printed labels before powering it.

Match the I2S channel to L/R

The INMP441 module manual specifies a 1.8–3.3 V operating range. It describes L/R low (GND) as left and high as right. Your I2S receive configuration must select the channel corresponding to that strap; otherwise, a left-only or right-only capture can appear silent even when the wiring is correct. The manual’s example uses 16 kHz sampling, 32-bit slots, and left-channel receive. See the ShillehTek INMP441 product manual.

Choose an I2S API supported by your Arduino-ESP32 version

The cited tutorial uses the legacy driver/i2s.h interface, while current Arduino-ESP32 documentation describes the I2SClass interface. API examples are not interchangeable across every core release. Check the installed ESP32 core version in Arduino IDE’s Boards Manager and use the corresponding API documentation and examples. If you stay with the tutorial’s legacy driver, use a core version that still supports it; if you use the current class interface, follow its pin setup and receive methods rather than mixing calls from the two APIs.

Configure capture and check that samples arrive

  1. In Arduino IDE, select your actual ESP32 board and its serial port.
  2. Set BCLK, WS, and DIN to the GPIOs you wired. Use the same assignments in your chosen I2S API.
  3. Configure I2S for receive, mono capture on the channel selected by L/R, and a sample rate and slot width supported by the microphone and API. The module manual’s example is 16 kHz with 32-bit slots and left-channel receive.
  4. Read a block of samples and print a few values or a short summary to the Serial Monitor. Keep the sample representation consistent with the API’s slot format; do not assume that every returned bit is meaningful microphone resolution.
  5. If the data is consistently zero, recheck power and ground, confirm that SD reaches DIN, verify all three GPIO assignments, and confirm L/R agrees with the receive channel.

The manual describes the output as 24-bit I2S PCM and gives a sample-rate range of 8–48 kHz. These module-manual specifications do not mean every Arduino-ESP32 API configuration or board combination will accept every setting; use a supported configuration for your installed core.

Plot the waveform or estimate short-window intensity

Once capture returns changing sample values, send samples over Serial in a format your plotting tool can read, or calculate a short-window statistic in the sketch. A waveform plot shows how the sample values change over time. To estimate signal intensity over a window of N samples, calculate root mean square (RMS): square each sample, average the squares, then take the square root. Use a sufficiently wide accumulator to avoid overflow when squaring sample values.

RMS from these raw digital samples is a relative signal-level estimate, not a calibrated sound-pressure measurement. It does not by itself yield decibels SPL; that requires appropriate calibration and a defined measurement chain. Microphone orientation, distance, gain or scaling, and the selected sample window affect what the displayed values mean.

Use a threshold for a simple clap-triggered output

A clap detector can compare each window’s RMS value with a threshold and turn an output on when the value exceeds it. For an LED demonstration, connect an LED and suitable series resistor to an available output pin, then configure that pin in the sketch. The threshold is specific to the microphone, wiring, environment, and sample scaling: observe quiet-room readings, make test claps at the intended distance, and adjust it to reduce false triggers. This simple threshold detects sufficiently loud changes; it is not a reliable way to identify claps in every noisy setting.

Common problems

  • No samples or all zeros: check VDD and GND, the SD-to-DIN connection, the selected receive channel, and the L/R strap.
  • Compile errors around I2S: the sketch may target a different Arduino-ESP32 core API. Use examples and documentation matching the installed core rather than combining legacy driver and I2SClass code.
  • Unstable or implausible readings: verify that the configured sample format and slot width match how the selected API returns data, and confirm the GPIOs are valid for the board.
  • Clap output triggers too often or not at all: adjust the RMS window and threshold for the room and setup. A threshold is not a calibrated acoustic level.
