You can use an Echo Dot with an LG Smart TV in two different ways, and they require different setups. The first uses Alexa on the Echo Dot to control a compatible LG TV through the LG ThinQ account. The second sends the TV’s sound to a Bluetooth audio device. Alexa control is the route LG documents for Echo Dot. Bluetooth audio depends on whether your specific Echo Dot and TV combination supports it, and LG’s guidance does not confirm that for every Echo Dot generation.
Choose the right goal first
Before you start, decide what you want the Echo Dot to do:
- Control the TV with your voice. Ask Alexa to turn the TV on or off, change volume, mute, switch inputs, or control video playback. This is the setup LG’s Echo Dot instructions cover.
- Hear the TV through the Echo Dot. Route the TV’s audio to a Bluetooth speaker. LG’s Bluetooth guide explains this for Bluetooth audio devices in general. It does not certify every Echo Dot generation as a compatible speaker for every LG TV.
The two routes do not depend on each other. You can complete one without the other, so confirm your model support for the goal you actually need.

Route 1: Control an LG TV with Alexa
What you need before you start
- An Echo Dot that is already set up and connected to the internet.
- The Alexa app installed on a phone or tablet.
- An LG TV that supports Amazon Alexa. Check this in the TV’s settings or on LG’s support site for your model, because support depends on model and region.
- Both the Echo Dot and the TV connected to the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- An LG ThinQ account, which you will use for both the TV and the Alexa skill.
LG Argentina’s support page, dated 22 August 2023, names webOS 4.5, 5.0, 6.0 and webOS22 as examples of compatible versions. LG Spain’s guidance describes webOS 4.5 or later as a general requirement, with exceptions. Neither page is a complete global list, so treat the webOS version as a starting point and confirm it for your exact TV.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Link the Echo Dot to ThinQ
- Set up the Echo Dot in the Alexa app and sign in to your LG ThinQ account.
- In the Alexa app, open Skills and Games, search for the LG ThinQ skill, and enable it.
- Sign in to the skill with the same account you use for ThinQ.
- On the TV, open the device or account linking area. The menu path differs by webOS version: LG publishes separate paths for webOS 4.5, webOS 5.0, and webOS 6.0 or webOS22. Follow the path for your TV’s version rather than a generic menu.
- Ask Alexa to discover devices. When the TV appears, confirm the name assigned to it in the Alexa app.
Commands that work and their limits
LG lists these commands for the Alexa setup:
- Turning the TV power on and off
- Volume up and down, and mute
- Selecting an input, such as HDMI or Live TV
- Video playback control
LG also states that opening apps through the Echo Dot is not available in this setup. To launch apps, use the Magic Remote.
Route 2: Send TV audio to a Bluetooth device
LG’s US support page for Bluetooth connections, dated 18 August 2026, says the TV’s sound output must be set to Bluetooth and then a connectable audio device selected. The exact menu depends on the TV’s webOS version:

|---|---|---|
| 2026 models | webOS 26 or later | Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out → Bluetooth Devices → Connectable Devices |

| 2020 and older models | webOS 5.0 or earlier | Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Out → Bluetooth → Connectable Devices |
Steps to pair
- Put the audio device into pairing mode.
- On the TV, go to the menu path for your webOS version and set Sound Out to Bluetooth.
- Select the device under Connectable Devices and complete pairing.
Menu labels can vary by model, so if a label differs from the table, look for the closest match under Sound Out.
Confirm the Echo Dot can act as the speaker
Pairing steps alone do not prove that a given Echo Dot will work. Before you rely on this route, confirm two things: that your Echo Dot generation supports the speaker role you need, and that your TV model supports the audio output you want. Without both, you may pair the devices and still find the connection unreliable or unavailable.

When the audio device does not appear on the TV
If the device is missing from the TV’s list, work through these checks in order:
- Pairing mode: confirm the audio device is in pairing mode.
- Sound output: confirm the TV’s sound output is set to Bluetooth.
- Another phone or tablet: if the device connected automatically to a phone or tablet, turn Bluetooth off on that other device, put the audio device back into pairing mode, and search again.
- Other causes: LG identifies interference, a temporary system error, or a hardware fault as possible reasons. Move the devices closer together, restart the TV, and retry. If it still fails, the problem may be hardware.
Wired alternatives for external sound systems
LG’s general audio guide lists HDMI ARC and optical connections for external sound systems. You change the TV’s Sound Out setting to match the connection. These options do not connect the Echo Dot. Use them only if you have a compatible external speaker system and want wired audio instead of Bluetooth.

Practical notes for buyers
The Echo Dot is the only device this guide assumes. If you do not already own one, it is needed only for the Alexa control route. If you already have an Echo Dot that Alexa supports, you do not need to buy a new one.
Before you rely on either route, check your TV’s model and webOS version in the TV’s settings, then confirm support for that model on LG’s support site.
