Connect an AI service desk to Teams, Slack, and email as three separate channel integrations—not as one switch. First choose whether your service-desk vendor provides native apps, a custom bot will connect to its API, or an organization-managed assistant will front approved company tools. Then configure each channel’s identity, permissions, and audience, and test ticket workflows and human handoff in that channel before expanding access.
Choose the integration pattern before configuring channels
The channel setup depends on what will answer employees and where ticket actions occur. Microsoft documents Teams and Microsoft 365 email channels for Azure AI Bot Service, as well as a separate Slack connection procedure. Organizations using OpenAI’s @ChatGPT assistant have another documented route to connect it to Slack or Teams through the admin console. These are platform connection paths, not a guarantee that a particular service desk supports every action or feature.
- Native service-desk integration: Use this if your service-desk product supplies supported Teams, Slack, or email integrations. Verify its current feature, permission, and licensing details with the vendor.
- Custom bot or assistant in front of the service-desk API: Use this when you need to define how messages map to actions such as ticket lookup, creation, updates, or escalation. Microsoft’s Azure AI Bot Service documentation describes channel setup, but the service desk’s API determines which ticket actions are actually possible.
- Organization-managed assistant connected to company tools: An assistant such as OpenAI’s @ChatGPT can be connected to supported messaging workspaces through its admin console. Confirm which approved company tools and actions it can access; a channel connection alone does not establish ticketing capabilities.
Before selecting a route, record where tickets, identity, and conversation history live. Also decide whether users act under their own permissions or through a shared service account. That choice affects what the assistant can see and do, and what needs to appear in the audit trail.

Teams, Slack, and email each have their own administrative controls. Treat a successful test in one as no more than a test of that channel.
#1 Best Overall
- Identity and permissions: Determine who can approve tenant consent, app installation, Slack scopes, and mailbox access. Review the permissions of the app and any connected account; start with only what the intended workflow needs.
- Audience: Restrict the initial rollout to the intended people or channels where the platform and integration support it. Test whether a reply is private or visible to everyone in a conversation. In Slack, channel restrictions do not necessarily restrict direct messages.
- Message support: Check whether the selected integration supports the message types your workflow needs, including rich cards, attachments, threads, edits, and proactive notifications. Microsoft notes that channel support for the activity schema varies and conversion may occur.
- Ticket actions and handoff: Verify each intended action against the service desk’s current documentation. A channel connection does not by itself prove that ticket creation, status checks, updates, or escalation are supported.
- Data handling: Decide what information may be sent to a shared conversation, how history is retained, and what data-access, retention, or residency controls apply to the service desk and connected tools.
Connect the service desk to Microsoft Teams
There are separate routes for an organization-managed @ChatGPT assistant and a custom Azure bot. In either case, coordinate the connection with the administrators who control the intended Microsoft 365 tenant and Teams app policies.
For an OpenAI @ChatGPT assistant
- In the OpenAI admin console, connect the intended Teams tenant and complete organizational consent if prompted.
- In Teams admin center, install the app for the intended users or groups and confirm the applicable Teams policies allow its use.
- Create a surface for the matching tenant.
- In an approved test channel, mention the assistant and verify that it responds as expected. Test personal chat and file support separately if they are part of the approved configuration.
A response in a channel confirms only that tested route. It does not validate personal chat, files, or other Teams behavior.

- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
For a custom Azure Bot Service integration
Microsoft lists Teams as a channel for Azure Bot Service and provides channel-specific configuration guidance. Choose an implementation that matches the interaction and identity requirements: a basic notification mechanism and a multi-turn support bot are not interchangeable. Confirm the bot’s actual ticket actions against the service-desk API rather than assuming channel support supplies them.
Do not build new notifications around retired Office 365 Connectors
Microsoft said creation of new Office 365 Connectors would be blocked starting August 15, 2024, and that existing connectors would become unavailable as of October 1, 2024. Check Microsoft’s current retirement and Workflows guidance before choosing a Teams notification mechanism.

Connect the service desk to Slack
Slack configuration involves both the app’s requested scopes and the conversations it can access. Slack states that “The data that an AI app in Slack can access depends on its scopes.” Access to channel or direct-message content also depends on adding the app to those conversations. Workspace owners or administrators can control app approval and organization-wide app policies.
For an OpenAI @ChatGPT assistant
- Connect the intended Slack workspace through the assistant’s admin console.
- Have an authorized workspace owner or app manager approve installation or any requested scope upgrades.
- Create the assistant’s surface and, if available, restrict the initial test to selected channels.
- Invite the assistant to an approved channel and test a new thread. Test direct messages separately; a channel restriction does not restrict direct messages.
For a custom Azure Bot Service integration
- With suitable Slack app-management access, create a Slack app for the intended workspace.
- Collect the app credentials and configure the bot token scopes needed for the workflow.
- Configure the Slack channel on the Azure bot using Microsoft’s channel instructions.
- Store credentials securely and request only the scopes the integration needs.
Slack says its marketplace apps are reviewed and subject to a zero-copy and zero-LLM-training policy. Do not extend that statement to apps installed outside the marketplace or to a vendor’s separate service terms; assess those independently.

Connect the service desk to email
Microsoft documents an Email channel for Azure Bot Service, but it is limited to Microsoft 365 email: “The Email channel currently works with Office 365 only.” Do not assume this channel supports Gmail or arbitrary IMAP/SMTP providers.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft’s modern-authentication setup uses a dedicated Microsoft 365 email account and grants the bot read/write and send permissions. Treat that mailbox as an integration identity, and make its permissions and operational behavior explicit. Decide how retention, automated replies, message threading, and escalation should work before enabling it for employees.
Best Value
- Simple shift planning via an easy drag & drop interface
- Add time-off, sick leave, break entries and holidays
- Email schedules directly to your employees
Test the complete workflow before expanding access
Test each channel with an intended user and the actual service-desk record as the reference point. A message appearing in a chat is not sufficient if it creates a duplicate ticket, reports stale status, or fails to reach a person when needed.
- Map the workflow: List the actions employees should be able to take—such as submit a request, check status, provide relevant information, receive an acknowledgement, and escalate to a human. Mark which are supported by the chosen service desk and integration.
- Run the same representative tasks separately in Teams, Slack, and email: Confirm the acknowledgement, ticket ID, and status align with the service-desk record. Test attachments or other message features only if they are part of the approved workflow.
- Check audience and access: Test a restricted channel, an unauthorized user, and a reply containing information that should not be exposed in a shared conversation.
- Exercise failures: Test a missing permission, duplicate request, unavailable service, and escalation to a human. Confirm the user receives a useful outcome rather than a misleading success message.
- Expand deliberately: Give access to a wider audience only after the intended users validate the workflow. Revisit approvals if app permissions, connected account access, connection owners, or audience change.
What to verify with the service-desk vendor
General platform documentation cannot establish whether your specific service desk supports a given feature, license tier, or deployment model. Confirm the following against the product you selected:
Quick Recap
- Which channels are supported natively, and whether a custom bot or API integration is required.
- Whether ticket lookup, creation, and updates are available, and how human escalation works.
- Whether authorization is per user or uses a shared service account, and what is recorded for audit.
- Support for files, threads, rich messages, edits, and proactive notifications in each channel.
- Data-access, retention, and residency controls, plus administrative and licensing requirements.
