Google documents a Gmail connection for compatible AI agents through its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, currently marked Developer Preview. Once configured and authorized, a host can use documented tools to find and read email, manage labels, list drafts, and create a draft for you to review. MCP is the connection layer—not access by itself—and email content can carry security risks.
What an MCP inbox connection does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standardized way for an AI application, or host, to discover and call capabilities exposed by a server. For Gmail, Google’s remote MCP server sits between a compatible host and Gmail: the host can discover available tools and invoke them to retrieve or act on inbox data. MCP does not itself make the model a mailbox or authorize access; the connection must be configured and authenticated. Google Cloud’s MCP overview describes the protocol’s capability discovery, toolsets, authentication, and related platform controls.
Google documents the Gmail service at https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1. Its Gmail documentation identifies the service as Developer Preview, so availability and details may change. Google lists tools for searching and retrieving messages, working with labels, and managing drafts. The documented tool names are:

Google’s setup guide illustrates a read request: “What did Ariel say in her last email about our marketing plan?” The guide uses Ariel as an example sender. It also demonstrates asking for an email to be drafted to ariel@example.com; that address is a documentation example, not a real recipient in this walkthrough. The documented writing workflow creates a Gmail draft for the user to inspect and send. The listed toolset does not establish that this MCP service sends email directly.
How to configure the connection
The exact screens and sign-in steps depend on the MCP host. Google documents setup for Antigravity and Claude custom connectors; use the instructions for the host you actually run and confirm its current support before proceeding.

- Prepare a Google Cloud project. Enable both the Gmail API and Gmail MCP API in the project, as directed in Google’s setup guide.
- Check that your host supports the required flow. The host must support the authentication method you plan to use. Google’s documented Claude.ai or Claude Desktop connector requires a Claude Enterprise, Pro, Max, or Team plan; this is host-specific eligibility and may change, so check Google’s live guide.
- Configure the server endpoint. Add
https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1to the host’s MCP configuration. Google lists HTTP transport and OAuth 2.0 for Gmail MCP. - Complete the host-specific OAuth setup. Google provides OAuth client setup guidance for Antigravity and Claude custom connectors. In Antigravity’s documented flow, authenticate the configured server with the Google account whose Gmail you intend to use.
- Confirm the connection and available tools. Check that the host recognizes the authenticated Gmail server. Google’s MCP reference describes retrieving current tool specifications with
tools/list. - Start with a low-risk read request. Ask the agent to find a specific message or summarize a thread, then check the result against the email. If you ask it to write, inspect the draft in Gmail before deciding whether to send it.
OAuth authorization limits access to resources available to the signed-in user within the scopes that user authorized. Google says the user’s actual credentials are not shared with or stored in the AI application. Supported authentication methods depend on the client. See Google Cloud’s authentication documentation.

Security: treat email as untrusted input
Google warns that an email can contain indirect prompt-injection instructions—text intended to manipulate an AI agent that reads it. An agent should treat the message body as data to analyze, not as a trusted source of instructions. For example, a request to summarize a thread should not let instructions embedded in that thread redirect the agent to take unrelated actions.

A connected host may have the power to read, modify, or delete account data. Google advises using trusted tools, being cautious with untrusted email inputs, and reviewing actions. Practical safeguards include:
- Ask for one narrow task, such as finding a particular message or summarizing a named thread.
- Review the messages and labels involved before approving any consequential change.
- Inspect every generated draft in Gmail, including its recipients and wording, before sending it yourself.
- Do not treat a host’s connection prompt as proof that every action is harmless; understand what the host can do with the authorized account access.
Google Cloud’s broader MCP overview discusses authentication and authorization, administrative controls, IAM policies, and Model Armor scanning. Those are platform-level capabilities; their availability should not be assumed for every Gmail host, configuration, or personal account.
