You can connect a wired speaker without a headphone jack by matching the phone or TV’s audio output to the speaker’s input. For a phone, that usually means a USB-C-to-3.5 mm or Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. For a TV, use a compatible HDMI ARC/eARC or optical connection—or an optical-to-analog converter if the speaker system has only analog inputs. If the speakers are passive, you also need an amplifier or receiver.

Check the source, speaker input, and amplification first

Before choosing a cable or adapter, identify three things: the port that sends audio from the phone or TV, the input on the speaker or audio system, and whether the speakers have built-in amplification. A connector fitting physically does not guarantee that the signal types match.

  • Source output: Check the device itself and its manual or settings. Do not assume which ports it has based on its age or brand.
  • Speaker input: Look for 3.5 mm, RCA, optical, HDMI ARC/eARC, or bare speaker-wire terminals. If the speaker wire connects to an amplifier, use the amplifier’s inputs as the speaker-side connection.
  • Powered or passive: Active (powered) speakers have amplification built in. Passive speakers need an amplifier or receiver between them and the audio source.

Connect a phone with USB-C or Lightning

USB-C phone to a 3.5 mm speaker input

Use a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio adapter, then connect the speaker’s 3.5 mm cable to the adapter. Apple documents its USB-C adapter for connecting other speakers and audio devices: Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. Confirm that the speaker accepts analog audio through its 3.5 mm input and that the adapter is intended for audio.

Lightning phone to a 3.5 mm speaker input

Use a compatible Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter and plug the speaker’s 3.5 mm cable into it. Apple’s instructions cover Lightning iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running iOS 10 or later: Apple’s adapter and connection instructions. A Lightning adapter is not interchangeable with a USB-C adapter; match it to the phone’s port.

These phone adapter routes apply when the speaker or connected audio system has a compatible 3.5 mm analog input. If the speaker has only RCA inputs, use a suitable 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable; if it has only bare speaker-wire terminals, connect it through an amplifier rather than directly to the phone adapter.

Connect a TV using HDMI ARC/eARC or optical audio

Use HDMI ARC/eARC with compatible audio equipment

If both the TV and the external audio system support HDMI ARC or eARC, connect the cable to the ports marked ARC/eARC and select the corresponding sound output in the TV settings. ARC/eARC carries audio to compatible equipment; it is not a universal analog output for an ordinary wired speaker. Samsung’s setup instructions note that support and menus depend on the TV model: Samsung TV eARC setup.

Use optical output with an optical input

If the TV has an optical digital audio output and the audio system has an optical input, connect them with an optical cable and select the appropriate output in the TV’s sound settings. Optical is digital, so it is not a direct match for an analog-only 3.5 mm or RCA input. Panasonic describes optical connection as an option when the audio system has an optical input: Panasonic TV and audio-system connection guidance.

Convert optical digital audio to analog when needed

If the TV has optical output but the speaker system accepts only analog RCA or 3.5 mm audio, place an optical-to-analog DAC/converter between them. Connect TV optical out to the converter’s optical input, then connect the converter’s analog output to the speaker or amplifier’s analog input. Panasonic identifies conversion as an option when the audio system lacks optical input: Panasonic connection guidance.

A DAC converts the signal; it does not power passive speaker drivers. If the converter produces no sound, check that the TV is sending audio from its optical output and set the digital output to PCM or stereo if required by the converter. MEE’s product-specific optical setup instructions call for stereo/PCM rather than Dolby or 5.1 formats: MEE audio optical TV setup. Other converters may accept different formats, so check their instructions.

What to do with passive speakers or other inputs

Bare speaker-wire terminals generally indicate passive speakers. Connect those speakers to a compatible stereo amplifier or receiver, then connect the phone or TV to an input on that amplifier. Choose the amplifier input and source connection to match—such as an analog input for a phone adapter or a compatible digital/analog input for the TV. A phone adapter or optical DAC alone cannot drive passive speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Active speakers contain amplification and can connect directly to a TV when the speaker input and TV output are compatible. Genelec notes that its active speakers can connect directly to a TV where the connections match: Genelec TV connection guidance.

Troubleshoot a connection with no sound

  • Recheck the signal path: Confirm the cable is connected to an output on the phone or TV and to an input on the speaker system or amplifier.
  • Confirm the input selection: Select the connected input on the speaker, amplifier, receiver, or TV sound-output menu.
  • For optical, check the format: If the DAC or downstream equipment does not decode the TV’s digital format, try PCM/stereo when the TV offers that setting and the equipment requires it. See the converter’s instructions; MEE’s guide gives a product-specific example: MEE optical setup.
  • For HDMI ARC/eARC, verify both ends: Make sure the cable uses the labeled ARC/eARC ports, the equipment supports the feature, and the TV output is set accordingly. Model-specific steps are in the TV manual; Samsung’s guide illustrates this variation: Samsung eARC setup.
  • For passive speakers, check the amplifier: Ensure the speakers are connected to an amplifier or receiver and that the source is connected to an input on that equipment.
