Connect the player’s yellow video plug to the TV’s composite video input, then connect white to left audio and red to right audio. Turn on both devices and select the TV’s AV input. If the TV has no composite input, use a powered converter that takes composite AV in and sends HDMI out.
Check the ports before connecting
On the VCR or DVD player, look for RCA jacks labeled VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT. On the TV, look for matching VIDEO IN and AUDIO IN jacks, sometimes grouped under AV IN. Connect an output on the player to an input on the TV; do not connect two outputs together.
RCA refers to the plug type. In a typical composite connection, yellow carries video, white carries left-channel audio, and red carries right-channel audio. A mono VCR may have a different audio arrangement, so follow the labels and manuals for both devices rather than assuming it has stereo outputs.
Connect RCA directly when the TV has composite input
- With the devices off, connect the player’s yellow video output to the TV’s composite video input.
- Connect white to the left audio jacks and red to the right audio jacks, matching output to input. Philips’ instructions describe this color-matched composite hookup for applicable equipment: Philips composite connection instructions.
- Turn on the TV and player, start playback, and use the TV remote’s Input, Source, or AV control to select the input you used. The exact label depends on the TV.
Some TVs combine composite video with another input jack or require a manufacturer-supplied breakout adapter. Check the exact TV model’s port labels and manual before connecting or buying an adapter; port layouts are not universal.

Use an AV-to-HDMI converter if the TV has no composite input
For an HDMI-only TV, the signal must travel from the player’s analog composite outputs to the TV’s HDMI input. Choose a converter specifically labeled composite AV/RCA to HDMI, not one that converts HDMI to AV. - Connect the player’s yellow, white, and red outputs to the converter’s composite AV inputs.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Provide power to the converter as its instructions require; many converters need a separate power connection.
- Turn on the player and TV, start playback, and select the HDMI input used by the converter.
A converter changes the connection format; it cannot restore picture detail missing from the original recording or disc. There is no universal resolution or picture-quality result for every converter and TV combination, so check the converter’s compatibility and power requirements rather than relying on a blanket quality promise.

Choose the connection that matches your equipment

Check DVD/VCR combo output limits
A DVD/VCR combo can have several kinds of output, but not every output necessarily carries both DVD and VCR playback. Philips says the cited combo models support S-Video or component output for DVD playback only; VCR playback on those models uses composite. This is model-specific guidance, so consult the manual for your exact player: Philips DVD/VCR connection instructions.
Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing sound
- Wrong TV input: Select the AV input used for a direct connection or the specific HDMI input used by a converter.
- Incorrect signal direction: Confirm the player is connected from its outputs to the TV’s inputs. For an HDMI-only TV, the converter must accept AV/composite and output HDMI.
- Loose or misplaced plugs: Check that yellow is in the video path and red and white are in the audio path, with each player output going to a TV or converter input.
- Converter not powered: Check its power connection and follow its setup instructions.
- Player not playing the intended source: Confirm the VCR or DVD player is in the correct playback mode and the tape or disc is running.
- Combo-player output limitation: If one function works and the other does not, verify that the chosen output supports VCR as well as DVD playback on that model.
Menu names and port arrangements vary by manufacturer and model. Philips and Element both direct users to match the appropriate connections and select the corresponding TV source; their instructions apply to the devices and configurations they describe.
