To connect a turntable, match its output to the input on the device you want to use. A turntable’s cartridge produces a low-level PHONO signal that needs exactly one phono stage before it reaches a LINE/AUX input. That stage may be built into the turntable, the speakers or amplifier, or a separate phono preamp.

First, check for a phono stage

Look for a switch labeled PHONO/LINE or PHONO EQ, or check the turntable manual for a built-in phono preamp. Also check the destination device’s input labels: a PHONO input includes a phono stage, while LINE, AUX, and most analog inputs expect a line-level signal. The exact switch operation and inputs vary by model, so confirm both manuals before connecting.

Use one phono stage in the signal path—not zero and not two. With a turntable set to LINE, use a LINE/AUX or other suitable analog input. With a turntable set to PHONO, use a PHONO input or an external phono preamp before a LINE/AUX input.

Connect a turntable to powered speakers

Powered speakers contain their own power amplifiers, so you do not need a separate stereo power amplifier. They still need the correct signal level, and not every pair of powered speakers has a phono stage.

Pyle Phono Turntable Preamp - Mini Electronic Audio Stereo Phonograph Preamplifier with RCA Input, RCA Output & Low Noise Operation Powered by 12 Volt DC Adapter - PP999
  • Converts phono signals: a turntable preamp that converts phono signals to line level signals. This state-of-the-art circuitry phono preamp can accommodate magnetic pickups with an input sensitivity of 3mV at 50K ohms
  • Low noise operation: offers outstanding performance with it’s low-noise Audio operational amplifiers. The output is 2V max (p-p) at 10K ohms. It’s better to position the preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interference
  • Connects to turntables: connect any Turntable to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music. For the receiver, This can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
  • Simple plug & play: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the Turntable to the RCA inputs and ground. Then, connect the amplifier Receiver to the RCA outputs

Turntable has a built-in phono preamp

  1. Set the turntable to LINE or enable its PHONO EQ, as directed by its manual.
  2. Connect the turntable’s left and right RCA outputs to the speakers’ analog LINE/AUX input.

Edifier’s guidance for the R1280DB/DBs says direct RCA connection requires a turntable with a built-in preamp; Klipsch likewise directs users with a turntable preamp to an analog input rather than PHONO. Check the instructions for your specific models: Edifier support and Klipsch support.

Speakers have a PHONO input, but the turntable does not have a preamp

  1. Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the speakers’ PHONO input.
  2. If the turntable has a PHONO/LINE switch, set it to PHONO.
  3. Connect the turntable’s ground lead to the speakers’ GND terminal if the terminal is provided and the manuals call for it.

Klipsch describes this connection for The Sevens II; input layouts differ across models.

Phono Turntable Preamp,Low Noise Stereo Preamplifier with RCA Input/TRS Output, High-Fidelity Audio with 12V DCAdapter for Vinyl Phonograph - Home Audio
  • Convert Phono Signal: The turntable preamp converts phono signals to line level for better sounding audio and volume. This state-of-the-art circuitry phono preamp can accommodate magnetic pickups with an input sensitivity of 3mV at 50K Ohms Please make sure that the turntable you are connecting to use does not have a built-in preamp, if it does then using this phono preamp may result in bad noise.
  • Low Noise Operation: The phono preamp offers outstanding performance with it’s Low-Noise Audio Operational Amplifiers. The output is 2V max (P-P) at 10K Ohms. It’s better to position the preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interferenceMake your vinyl records deliver sound exactly as it's read from your turntable's needle.
  • RCA Input & RCA Output: This mini preamp has stereo RCA inputs and stereo RCA outputs. Connect the turntable to the RCA inputs and ground Then, connect the amplifier receiver to the RCA outputs(DC 12V Adapter is included).
  • Simple Plug & Play: Connect any phono turntable preamps to modern sound equipment without specialized phono input for amplifying music.Simply hook up the preamp to both turntable and audio device so you can enjoy vinyl in no time. For the receiver, this can be connected to speakers, computers, laptops and more
  • 1 Year Warrranty: We guarantee this electric phono preamplifier with both a 30-day, no hassle money back return policy and a 1 year manufacturer’s guarantee.

Neither device has a phono stage

  1. Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to an external phono preamp’s PHONO input.
  2. Connect the preamp’s LINE output to the speakers’ analog input.

An external phono preamp is needed only when neither the turntable nor the speakers provides the required stage.

Connect a turntable to an amplifier or receiver

Amplifier or receiver has a PHONO input

  1. Connect the turntable’s RCA outputs to the amplifier’s PHONO input.
  2. Connect the turntable’s ground lead to the amplifier’s ground terminal if both the equipment and manuals provide for it.
  3. Connect passive speakers to the amplifier’s speaker outputs using the connections specified in the amplifier manual.

Use this route for a raw PHONO output—not for a turntable whose built-in phono preamp is enabled.

Amplifier has LINE/AUX but no PHONO input

If the turntable’s built-in phono preamp is available, enable it and connect the turntable to LINE/AUX. If it has no built-in stage, put an external phono preamp between the turntable and the amplifier: turntable to the preamp’s PHONO input, then the preamp’s LINE output to the amplifier’s LINE/AUX input. Manufacturer guidance from Audio-Technica and Pro-Ject also emphasizes using a suitable phono stage in the signal path.

Connect a turntable to wired headphones

The straightforward option is an amplifier or receiver with a headphone output. If you do not have one, a headphone amplifier can drive wired headphones from a line-level signal. The turntable signal must be at the right level before it reaches that headphone amplifier:

ART DJPREII Phono Preamplifier 14.1 x 7.3 x 2.3 inches
  • RCA-type input R/L
  • RCA-type output R/L
  • Ground terminal
  • Power Adapter Included
  • Turntable with built-in phono stage: Send its LINE-level output to a suitable line input on the headphone-capable device.
  • Turntable without a built-in phono stage: Use an external phono preamp before the headphone amplifier’s line input, unless another device in the chain supplies the phono stage.

Check both manuals to confirm the turntable’s output mode and the headphone amplifier’s input type. The TEAC TN-3B manual describes its built-in equalizer output feeding amplifier line inputs and warns that using that output with PHONO can make sound from speakers and headphones excessively loud. The practical rule is not to connect a line-level output to PHONO.

Troubleshoot hum, low volume, or distortion

  • Very quiet or thin sound: Check whether a raw PHONO signal is connected to LINE/AUX. If so, the signal may be missing a phono stage. Use a PHONO input or insert a phono preamp.
  • Distorted or unusually loud sound: Check whether the turntable’s phono preamp is active while connected to a PHONO input, or whether the signal passes through two phono stages. Match LINE to LINE or PHONO to PHONO.
  • Hum: Connect the ground lead to a compatible GND terminal when the equipment provides one and its manuals specify the connection. Grounding can help with hum, but terminals and requirements vary by device.

After changing a connection or switch, recheck the input and output labels in both manuals.
