You can use a tablet with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse—but first confirm that your exact tablet model supports video output. For a wired HDMI setup, connect the tablet to the monitor with a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, then pair Bluetooth input devices or connect wired ones through a compatible hub. Depending on the tablet, the monitor may mirror the tablet or show a separate desktop-style workspace.
Check whether your tablet supports an external display
Find your tablet’s exact model and port, then check its manufacturer’s specifications or support page for external video output. A USB-C port by itself does not guarantee that a tablet can send video to a monitor. Google notes that Android connected-display features are not available on every device and may vary by model and settings: Android connected displays and desktop windowing.
Also check the monitor’s available inputs. If it has HDMI, a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable is a documented connection option for supported iPads and Galaxy tablets. If the monitor uses USB-C, confirm that both the monitor and tablet support the required video connection.

- Check that your specific tablet supports external video output and that the adapter or cable supports the monitor’s HDMI input.
- Connect the adapter or cable to the tablet, then connect its HDMI end to the monitor.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input you used.
- Unlock the tablet if prompted. Check for a display prompt or desktop-mode option if the monitor shows only a mirrored image.
- Connect your keyboard and mouse, then test typing and pointer movement.
For Galaxy tablets that support DeX, Samsung documents wired connections using a DeX cable, an HDMI-to-USB-C cable, or an HDMI adapter. If the external screen mirrors the tablet, Samsung says to choose DeX through the notification or Quick Settings controls. See Samsung’s Galaxy tablet DeX setup instructions.

For iPads with USB-C, Apple documents connecting displays through the USB-C port and using a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for HDMI displays. Supported output varies by iPad model and connection. Apple’s guide also covers USB-C hubs, docks, keyboards, and displays that can charge an iPad: Apple: Charge and connect with the USB-C port on your iPad.
Will my tablet mirror or extend to an external display?
That depends on the tablet and its software. Mirroring shows the tablet’s screen on the monitor. A desktop mode or desktop-windowing feature can provide a separate workspace instead. Google says Android devices may mirror or start a separate desktop session, depending on device support and settings; do not assume every Android tablet offers either option in the same way. On supported Galaxy tablets, Samsung DeX provides a desktop-style interface.

Can I use a keyboard and mouse with my tablet?
Yes, if the tablet supports the accessories and connection method. Bluetooth keyboards and mice can be paired in the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. For wired devices, a compatible USB-C hub or dock can provide USB ports; check that both the hub and tablet support your intended setup.

Choose the connection that fits your setup

Check resolution, charging, and accessories
Do not assume a particular resolution just because a tablet has USB-C or the adapter has an HDMI connector. Output capabilities depend on the tablet model and adapter. Apple lists different maximum display and HDMI output capabilities for different iPad models; consult its USB-C connection specifications for your iPad and setup.
A USB-C display may charge some iPads while connected, and a hub or dock may help when you need extra ports. Apple notes that some accessories may request more power and affect battery life. Confirm charging support and power requirements for your particular tablet, display, and hub before relying on a single-cable setup.

If the monitor, keyboard, or mouse does not work
- No picture: Recheck that the tablet supports external video output, the cable or adapter is compatible, and the monitor is set to the correct input.
- The monitor only mirrors: Look for a desktop-mode setting. On a supported Galaxy tablet, select DeX from the notification or Quick Settings controls.
- A wired keyboard or mouse is not detected: Check hub compatibility and the tablet’s USB support. If using Samsung DeX with its DeX cable method, Samsung says wired keyboard and mouse devices do not work with that method; try Bluetooth input.
- Wireless DeX stutters: For the Samsung setup, reduce the distance between the Galaxy tablet and compatible display.
- Resolution is lower than expected: Verify the tablet’s model-specific output capability and the adapter’s specifications rather than assuming the display’s maximum resolution will be available.
