To connect a Galaxy device to a TV or monitor, first confirm that your exact model supports wired video output, then connect it using a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable and select the display’s HDMI input. Not every Galaxy device with a USB-C port supports HDMI output. Once connected, you can mirror the phone screen or switch to Samsung DeX on supported devices.
Check whether your Galaxy model supports HDMI output
HDMI support is model-specific. Samsung’s US compatibility list for Samsung DeX covers wired display connections on selected Galaxy S and Note phones, Z Fold models, the Galaxy A90 5G, and selected Galaxy tablets. It also identifies exclusions: for example, the Z Flip7 FE and earlier Z Flip models are not supported for DeX display connections, and some Tab FE and Lite models do not provide HDMI output.
Check the exact model number or product name against Samsung’s current list before buying an adapter. A USB-C port alone does not confirm video output, and a list of DeX-compatible devices should not be treated as a universal list of every possible screen-mirroring feature. Samsung’s support pages can differ by region; if you are outside the US, consult your local Samsung support site for eligibility in your market.

What you need for a wired connection
- A compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable: This is the essential accessory if your Galaxy device does not connect directly with a compatible HDMI cable. Samsung says a standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can be used to start DeX.
- An HDMI cable: You will need one if your adapter has an HDMI port rather than an attached lead.
- A TV or monitor with an HDMI input: The display must have a suitable input available.
- Optional peripherals: A keyboard and mouse can make DeX easier to use, but they are not required for displaying the phone. A USB-C multiport adapter is another optional choice if you want to connect a display and peripherals through one setup; check the specific accessory’s compatibility.
Samsung’s official connection guidance supports the adapter category, not every adapter or hub on the market. Check your Galaxy model and the accessory’s specifications before purchasing; the cited guidance does not establish a universal output resolution, refresh rate, or charging behavior.

How to connect a Galaxy phone to a TV with HDMI
- Verify compatibility. Find your exact Galaxy phone or tablet on Samsung’s current compatibility page for your region.
- Connect the adapter. Plug the compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable into the Galaxy device. If the adapter has a separate HDMI port, connect an HDMI cable to it.
- Connect the display. Plug the HDMI lead into the TV or monitor.
- Select the input. Use the TV or monitor’s input controls to choose the HDMI port you connected.
- Respond to the phone prompt. Unlock the device and tap Start if prompted. The display may initially show a mirrored copy of the phone screen.
- Switch to DeX if desired. Open the DeX notification or Quick Settings panel and select DeX. Menu labels and locations may vary by software version.
Screen mirroring and Samsung DeX are different

If the external display mirrors your phone when you expected DeX, open the DeX notification or Quick Settings and switch modes. In Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance, the connected-display setting is under Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connected display > Extend. The exact path may differ with device software.
Wired HDMI, wireless DeX, and adapter options

- Recheck device support. Confirm the exact model is listed for wired DeX or HDMI output. Do not assume that USB-C means video output is supported.
- Install available software updates. Samsung recommends checking for updates when troubleshooting DeX connections.
- Inspect the connection. Make sure the adapter or cable is compatible and fully connected to the phone and display. If possible, check the HDMI lead and adapter connections.
- Confirm the HDMI input. Make sure the TV or monitor is set to the port you used.
- Check the display mode. If you see a mirrored phone screen rather than DeX, open DeX from the notification or Quick Settings. Where available, check the connected-display setting and select Extend.
- Try another display. Connect to a different TV or monitor to help determine whether the original display is the compatibility issue.
If the connection remains unsuccessful, Samsung’s DeX troubleshooting guidance provides additional checks. Wireless DeX may be an alternative on supported devices, but it uses a different connection method from a USB-C-to-HDMI setup.
