To connect your phone to Bluetooth in a Honda Civic, pair it through the car’s HandsFreeLink (HFL) system and your phone’s Bluetooth settings. The exact menu path varies by model year and audio system, so use the steps for your Civic’s configuration. Park before starting; Honda’s 2019 Civic Type R guide says pairing can only be done while the vehicle is stopped.
Before you start
- Park the Civic and keep it stopped while pairing.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your phone. Depending on the Civic’s audio system, you may need to make the phone discoverable or let the car search for it.
- Check the owner’s manual for your exact year, body style, and audio system. Honda’s 2019 and 2020 U.S.-market guides show different steps for Color Audio and Display Audio; these instructions should not be assumed to apply to every year or market.
Pair a phone with Civic Display Audio
Honda’s 2019 Civic Type R guide documents this Display Audio sequence:
- Select Phone on the vehicle’s display and confirm the pairing prompt.
- Make your phone discoverable when prompted, then continue on the vehicle screen.
- Select your phone when it appears in the Civic’s device list. If it does not appear, use the vehicle’s refresh or search option, or search for Bluetooth devices from your phone and select HandsFreeLink.
- Check that the pairing code shown on the phone matches the code on the vehicle, then accept the pairing request on both devices.
Pair a phone with Civic Color Audio
The Color Audio menus differ from the Display Audio flow. Honda’s 2019 guides show pairing started with the Phone or pick-up/hang-up control, while the 2020 Civic Sedan guide gives this path for adding a phone:

- Press the Phone or pick-up/hang-up control to start pairing, then accept the prompt.
- On the 2020 Civic Sedan, choose Phone Setup > Bluetooth Setup > Add new device to add another phone.
- Follow the prompts to search for a device. If the Civic does not find your phone, search for Bluetooth devices from the phone and select HandsFreeLink, or refresh the vehicle’s device list if that option appears.
- Verify that the code on both screens matches and accept the pairing request.
Honda’s 2019 and 2020 U.S. Civic Hatchback and Sedan guides document these general interface differences; the available controls and wording can vary by configuration.

If your Civic cannot find your phone
- Try the other device’s search. If the vehicle’s search does not list the phone, search from the phone’s Bluetooth settings for HandsFreeLink. If the phone does not find the Civic, use the vehicle’s refresh or search function where available.
- Check whether a phone is already connected for smartphone integration. On the specific 2019 Civic Type R Display Audio configuration described by Honda, an active Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connection makes adding another Bluetooth-compatible device unavailable; the Add Bluetooth Device control is grayed out. This limitation is documented for that configuration, not all Civics.
- Match the instructions to the car. If the menu names do not match or pairing still fails, consult the manual for the exact model year and vehicle. Honda’s manuals are vehicle-specific; its owner resources let owners find manuals and how-to information.
Find the correct Honda instructions
Use Honda Owners’ manuals and warranties to locate the documentation for your Civic. Honda also provides service, maintenance, and safety recall resources. The latter is a general Honda support resource, not evidence that a specific Bluetooth procedure applies to your vehicle.
