You can share a phone’s mobile data through a router if the router supports joining Wi-Fi as an internet source (often called WISP or Hotspot mode) or supports USB tethering. For Wi-Fi, connect to the router’s setup network, select the phone hotspot in the router settings, enter its password, and set up the router’s own Wi-Fi network. Menu names vary by model, so check the router manual before you start.
Check whether your router supports the connection you want
A router needs a supported way to receive internet from the phone. Look in its manual or operating-mode menu for Wi-Fi uplink options such as Hotspot, WISP, Public Wi-Fi, or a compatible repeater mode. For a cable connection, the manual must specifically list USB tethering; a USB port alone does not confirm support. TP-Link cautions that not every model supports every mode in its operation-mode guide.
The mode names are not interchangeable. ASUS describes WISP as using a Wi-Fi connection as the router’s WAN connection while serving wired and wireless clients. A repeater may extend an existing network, but its behavior varies by model. Client mode can connect wired equipment to Wi-Fi without necessarily creating a separate Wi-Fi network. Access point mode uses a wired upstream connection, so it is not the usual way to connect a phone hotspot to a router.
Connect the router to the phone hotspot over Wi-Fi
- Turn on the phone hotspot. On the phone, enable its personal or mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and note the network name (SSID) and password. Google’s Android hotspot instructions describe selecting the hotspot on another device and entering its password.
- Connect to the router’s setup network. Use a computer or phone to join the router’s default setup Wi-Fi, or connect by Ethernet if available.
- Open the router’s management page. Use the address in the router’s manual or printed setup information. For example, TP-Link documents tplinkwifi.net or, on certain models, 192.168.0.1; ASUS uses its router URL or LAN IP. These are vendor-specific examples, not universal addresses.
- Choose the Wi-Fi-as-internet mode. In the router’s setup interface, choose the supported Hotspot, WISP, Public Wi-Fi, or other Wi-Fi uplink mode. Scan for networks, select the phone hotspot, and enter its password. TP-Link’s Hotspot/WISP setup guide and ASUS’s WISP guide show vendor-specific flows.
- Set the router’s local Wi-Fi details and apply. Choose a network name and password for devices that will connect to the router, then save or apply the settings.
- Reconnect and test. If the router’s local Wi-Fi name or password changed, reconnect your setup device using the new details. Join that network with another client and check whether the router reports an internet connection.
After setup, the phone supplies the upstream connection and the router shares it with its own clients. The router’s client capacity and the phone or carrier’s tethering limits are separate constraints.

Use USB tethering when both devices support it
This method avoids using the phone hotspot as a Wi-Fi uplink, but it works only if the router explicitly supports USB tethering and the phone offers it.
- Connect the phone to the router’s USB port with a suitable cable.
- On Android, open the phone’s hotspot or tethering controls and enable USB tethering. Google’s Android instructions explain the phone-side setting.
- Follow the router’s model-specific instructions to select or enable USB tethering, then check for internet access on a connected client.
Google notes that Mac computers cannot tether to an Android phone over USB. It also warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra. Check the carrier plan and the router manual before relying on this connection.

Fix common connection problems
The router cannot find the hotspot
- Confirm the phone hotspot is on and the router is scanning in its Wi-Fi uplink mode.
- Check that the router supports the hotspot’s band and channel. A router may not show networks on channels it cannot use.
- If the phone is an iPhone and a GL.iNet router cannot find its Personal Hotspot, GL.iNet’s troubleshooting guidance says to keep the iPhone screen unlocked while searching.
The router sees the hotspot but will not connect
Check the hotspot password and whether the router supports the phone’s Wi-Fi security and band. Apple says iPhone Personal Hotspot uses WPA2/WPA3 Personal by default. On iPhone 12 or later, Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility turns off 5 GHz (and 6 GHz if applicable), restricts the hotspot to 2.4 GHz, and enforces WPA2 Personal. Apple documents this in its Personal Hotspot security guidance. Use the setting if a router lacks compatibility with the default hotspot configuration.

The router connects, but clients have no internet
- Check the phone’s mobile-data connection and confirm the carrier plan permits tethering.
- Verify that the router reports its upstream connection as online and that the client joined the router’s local network, not an old setup network.
- If the upstream network is public Wi-Fi, it may require a captive-portal sign-in or periodic reauthentication. ASUS notes that a portal may still appear on a second device in some cases and lists MAC cloning as a possible troubleshooting step in its WISP guidance. Its observation that some public-hotspot connections renew every 24 hours applies to those public connections, not necessarily to a phone hotspot.
The router’s setup page stops responding
If you changed the router’s local Wi-Fi name or password, reconnect your setup device to the updated network before reopening the management page. TP-Link notes that a wireless setup device may need to reconnect after settings are applied in its setup guide.

Keep the shared connection secure
Set strong passwords for both the phone hotspot and the router’s local Wi-Fi. Google notes that Android hotspot security can be set to “None”; leaving it open allows nearby people to connect, so use password protection unless you specifically understand and accept that exposure. Apple says its Personal Hotspot uses WPA2/WPA3 Personal by default and provides a system-suggested secure password.
WISP or another routed mode may create a separate local network, but the degree of device isolation and firewall protection depends on the router’s implementation and settings. The mode name alone does not establish anonymity, VPN protection, or complete isolation.

Decide whether a router is necessary
If each device can connect to the phone directly, no router is required. Google says an Android phone can share its Wi-Fi hotspot with up to 10 other devices; that is Google’s stated phone hotspot limit, not a promise about any router’s capacity or a guarantee that a carrier permits that many tethered devices. A router is useful when you want a shared local Wi-Fi network or need to connect wired clients, provided the model supports the necessary uplink. TP-Link’s TL-WR902AC is one model included in its Hotspot/WISP setup guidance, but verify the exact hardware revision, firmware, region, supported band and security, and intended connection method before buying.
