Connect the monitor to a video-capable port on the back of the Mac mini, attach a keyboard and mouse by cable or Bluetooth, then press the Mac mini’s power button and follow Setup Assistant. The right cable depends on the ports on your specific Mac mini and monitor, so check both before connecting.
1. Connect and turn on the monitor
- Check the ports. Look at the rear of the Mac mini and the monitor’s available inputs. Use an HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video connection that both devices support. Apple’s setup guidance is to use the cable that matches the display and consult its documentation if you are unsure which input to use. Apple’s Mac mini display guide covers the current M6 and M5 Pro models and notes that older models have different display specifications.
- Choose the cable or adapter. If the connectors match, connect the display with a suitable cable. If they do not, use an adapter or a cable with compatible ends; connector shape alone does not guarantee that a USB-C cable carries video. Check the monitor documentation before choosing. Apple’s Mac mini setup guide explains the cable and adapter options.
- Connect monitor power and turn it on. Some monitors need a separate power connection. Select the monitor’s input corresponding to the port you used, if it does not select it automatically.
For the current Mac mini models described in Apple’s 2026 guide, the rear has three Thunderbolt/USB-C ports and one HDMI port for video; the two front USB-C ports do not output video. Do not assume that layout applies to every generation. Check the ports and display specifications for your exact model in Apple’s Mac mini port overview and the relevant model specifications.
2. Connect a keyboard and mouse
Wired accessories
Plug a wired keyboard and mouse into available USB-C or Thunderbolt ports using their cables. If an accessory’s connector does not fit, use a suitable adapter. Some accessories also need a separate power source. Apple describes these connection options in its Mac mini accessory guide.

Bluetooth accessories
Make each accessory ready to pair and keep it near the Mac mini. Once macOS is available, open System Settings > Bluetooth and select the device to pair or reconnect it. Apple’s keyboard, mouse, and trackpad guide has further Bluetooth guidance.

Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse can be connected by cable first. After pairing, disconnect the cable to use them wirelessly over Bluetooth. A wired keyboard or mouse is also an option; Apple-branded accessories are not required by the setup instructions.
3. Turn on the Mac mini and complete setup
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and connected to a rear video output, and that the keyboard and mouse are connected or ready to pair.
- Press the Mac mini’s power button on the bottom.
- Follow the on-screen Setup Assistant prompts, including the initial Wi-Fi and user-account steps.
Apple’s instruction is: “Connect a display, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad, then press the power button on the bottom of your Mac mini.” See Set up your Mac mini.

If the monitor stays blank
- Check that the monitor is plugged in, switched on, and set to the input used by the Mac mini.
- Verify the display cable is connected to a video-capable port on the back of the Mac mini, not a front USB-C port on the current models covered by Apple’s guide.
- Confirm that the cable or adapter supports the monitor’s input and the Mac mini’s output. Consult the monitor documentation or try a suitable matching cable.
- If you are checking supported display count, resolution, refresh rate, or port combinations, look up the specifications for your exact Mac mini model. Apple’s M6 or M5 Pro specifications and 2024 Mac mini specifications apply only to the models named on those pages.
