Connect your monitor to a video-capable HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C port on the Mac, then connect a wired keyboard and mouse by cable or pair wireless ones in Bluetooth settings. The right port and cable depend on your Mac model: a connector that looks like USB-C does not necessarily support video.
Check your Mac and monitor ports first
Find the exact Mac model and identify its video-capable ports, then check which video input your monitor accepts. Apple’s Mac mini display guide identifies rear HDMI and Thunderbolt/USB-C ports for displays; the front USB-C ports on the Mac mini covered by Apple’s port guide do not carry video. This is specific to that Mac mini configuration, not a universal map for every Mac. For Mac Studio, Apple directs users to connect displays to a rear Thunderbolt or HDMI port in its setup guide.
Also check the monitor’s supported resolution and refresh rate against your Mac. The number of displays a Mac can support and the available configurations vary by model and display settings; consult the specifications for your exact Mac before planning a multi-monitor setup. Apple’s general display instructions explain how to check display support and adjust settings.

- Power the monitor. Connect its power cable and turn it on if it has a power switch.
- Choose a matching video connection. Connect the monitor and Mac with a cable that fits both ends and supports the intended display mode. If the connectors differ, use a compatible adapter or a cable with the correct connectors.
- Use a video-capable port on the Mac. Do not assume a USB-C-shaped port carries video; check the guide for your particular model.
- Adjust display settings if needed. On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Available options can include resolution, refresh rate, arrangement, color profile, and mirroring or extending the desktop. Some third-party monitors also have relevant controls in their on-screen menus.
Apple lists several connection examples for Mac mini in its display guide. Check compatibility for your Mac and monitor before choosing an adapter:

- HDMI monitor: connect with an HDMI cable to a Mac HDMI port.
- USB-C monitor: use a USB-C cable, if the Mac port and display support the required video connection.
- Thunderbolt 3 monitor: use a Thunderbolt 3 cable and a compatible Thunderbolt port.
- VGA monitor: Apple lists a USB-C VGA Multiport adapter and the display’s cable.
- DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort monitor: use a compatible USB-C video adapter.
- DVI monitor: use a USB-C-to-DVI adapter.
- Thunderbolt 2 monitor: Apple lists a Thunderbolt 3-to-Thunderbolt 2 adapter and the display’s cable.
Connect a keyboard and mouse
You can use wired accessories or Bluetooth accessories. For a wired keyboard or mouse, connect its cable to a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt port. If the plug does not match, use a suitable adapter. Check whether the accessory needs separate power.
For Bluetooth accessories, turn on Bluetooth, put the keyboard or mouse into pairing mode, and select it in Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth. The accessory may require pressing a pairing button or following its own instructions. Apple describes these wired and wireless options in its Mac mini accessory guide.

To pair a Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad, connect it to the Mac with its supplied cable and turn it on. After pairing, disconnect the cable to use it wirelessly over Bluetooth.
If the monitor or accessory does not work
Monitor shows a black screen or “no signal”
- Confirm the monitor is plugged in and switched on.
- Check that the video cable is firmly seated at both ends.
- Make sure the Mac end is connected to a video-capable port for that model.
- Verify that the selected cable or adapter supports the monitor’s input and the Mac’s output.
If the Mac still does not detect the display, or it is limited to a low resolution or refresh rate, follow Apple’s display troubleshooting guidance.

Bluetooth keyboard or mouse is missing
Check that the accessory has power, turn it on, and put it into pairing mode. Then open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and select it. Follow the accessory’s pairing instructions if it does not appear.
A cable or port does not fit
Identify the connector on both the Mac and display, then choose a cable or adapter made for those connections. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish that the port supports video.

You want to connect more than one display
Check Apple’s specifications for the exact Mac model and compare its supported display count, resolutions, and refresh rates with the displays you plan to use. Do not assume one Mac’s limits apply to another model.
