Connect your laptop to an Optoma projector by matching a laptop video output to a projector input—usually HDMI—then select that projector input and choose a display mode on the laptop. If the ports do not match, use an adapter only after confirming the laptop port can output video and the adapter matches the projector. Wireless projection depends on the specific devices and supported method.
1. Check the ports before connecting
Look at the laptop’s video outputs and the projector’s labeled inputs. HDMI is a straightforward option when both devices have HDMI ports; Optoma manuals illustrate a laptop or HDMI source connected to the projector by HDMI. Optoma PG31H manual and Optoma setup manual.
Do not assume every Optoma projector has the same inputs or supports the same signal modes. Check the manual for your exact model before buying a cable or adapter. Optoma basic user manual.

If the laptop has USB-C but no HDMI
A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not confirm that it carries video. Check the laptop manufacturer’s specifications for video output over that port. If supported, a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can connect it to a projector with HDMI input. Microsoft lists USB-C among the external-display interfaces on supported Surface devices; that guidance does not establish support for every laptop. Microsoft Surface external-display guidance.

Some Optoma models document USB-C connections, but a projector’s USB port should not be treated as a laptop video input unless that model’s manual explicitly supports it. Optoma PG31H manual.
2. Make the wired connection
- Connect the cable. If both devices have HDMI, connect an HDMI cable from the laptop to an HDMI input on the projector. If using an adapter, connect it between a video-capable laptop output and the projector’s matching input.
- Turn on the projector and choose its input. Select the HDMI input used by the cable. Menu labels and button sequences vary by model; consult the model manual if needed.
- Choose the laptop display mode. On Windows, press Windows logo key + P, then choose Duplicate to show the same content on both screens or Extend to use the projector as extra desktop space. Windows also offers PC screen only and Second screen only. Microsoft Windows projection guidance.
Choose a cable for your model
Cable recommendations are model-specific, not universal. Optoma’s PG31H manual recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable with HDMI 2.0 certification up to 5 meters. Optoma PG31H manual. Another Optoma setup manual recommends High Speed or Premium Certified HDMI cables up to 5 meters for the models covered by that manual. Optoma setup manual. Follow the advice for your projector rather than treating either recommendation as a requirement for all Optoma models.

Wireless projection is not a standard feature across every Optoma projector. Microsoft’s Windows casting instructions apply to external displays that support Miracast. Optoma separately describes optional wireless display on the W340UST using a Wi-Fi dongle and EZCast Pro app. These are distinct compatibility routes: check the laptop and projector documentation for the same supported method and any required accessories. - No signal: Reseat the cable at both ends, confirm the selected projector input matches the port in use, and check that the laptop is set to use the external display. If there is an adapter, check that it is firmly connected and compatible with both devices. Optoma setup manual and Microsoft Surface troubleshooting.
- The laptop detects the projector, but the image is blank: Check whether the laptop is set to Duplicate or Extend and verify its output settings. Projector-supported signal modes vary, so consult the exact model’s manual rather than assuming one resolution works for every unit. Optoma basic user manual.
