Connect the DVD player’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN port on the TV, turn on both devices, then select that HDMI input on the TV. HDMI carries digital audio and video through one cable on compatible equipment. If either device has no matching HDMI port, the right connection depends on the ports available on both devices.
How do I connect a DVD player to my TV with HDMI?
- Check the back or side of the DVD player for HDMI OUT and the TV for HDMI IN. Inputs and outputs are not interchangeable.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the player’s HDMI OUT to one of the TV’s HDMI IN ports. The cable may not be included with the player; check the package contents. See Sony’s TV connection guide for its model-specific instructions.
- Turn on the TV and DVD player. Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select the HDMI port you used, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Insert a disc and start playback. The DVD picture and sound should come through the TV.
If you are routing the player through an AV receiver or sound system, the correct wiring and audio settings depend on those models. Check the manuals for the player, receiver and TV rather than assuming every receiver setup is the same.
What does HDMI do, and does it make DVDs HD?
HDMI is a digital connection that can carry video and audio together over one cable; Sony describes that capability for its DVP-SR510H DVD player. A digital connection does not by itself change a DVD’s resolution.
Some DVD players upscale standard-definition video: the player increases the resolution of the signal it sends to the TV. The disc remains a standard-definition DVD; upscaling does not turn it into a native high-definition source. Philips explains the distinction as an SD DVD signal being output at an HD resolution.

Upscaling depends on the exact player
Sony specifies 1080p upscaling for the DVP-SR510H. That is a manufacturer specification for this model, not a claim that every HDMI DVD player supports 1080p or that upscaling matches a high-definition disc. Philips lists 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i and Auto output choices for the particular players covered by its resolution support page. Available settings vary by model.
What if my DVD player has no HDMI output?
Compare the output ports on the player with the inputs on the TV before buying a cable or adapter. A port that looks similar is not necessarily compatible, and some newer TVs may not have analog video inputs. Check the TV’s manual for its exact connections.

| Connection option | What it needs | Audio and video considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Component video | Matching red, green and blue video connections on the player and TV | Video uses the three component cables; separate red and white audio connections are also needed. Sony classifies component video as standard definition in its connection comparison. |
| Composite video | Matching yellow video and red/white audio connections | Yellow carries video; red and white carry audio. Sony classifies composite video as standard definition in its connection comparison. |
| HDMI to DVI | A compatible DVI input on the TV and an appropriate HDMI-to-DVI connection | DVI alone does not carry audio in Sony’s described setup. The TV needs a suitable audio input for a separate audio connection; check the exact TV’s ports and manual. |
| Composite-to-HDMI converter | A converter between the player’s analog output and the TV’s HDMI input | Compatibility and performance depend on the equipment and converter. Do not assume a generic converter will improve picture quality. |
Panasonic’s connection guide for older DVD/VCR players illustrates component and composite connections, including the separate audio leads needed with component video. Sony’s connection comparison identifies component and composite as standard-definition video methods.

Sony documents a reset for applicable models, while Philips describes fallback behavior for specified models on its resolution support page.
- Isolate the connection. Try another HDMI input on the TV or another cable if available. If the screen remains blank, consult support for the exact player and TV models.
Which connection should I use?
- Both devices have HDMI: use HDMI from the player’s output to the TV’s input, then select that TV input.
- The player has component or composite outputs: use a matching TV input if available, and connect audio separately where required.
- The player has HDMI but the TV has DVI: check the TV’s DVI and audio inputs and the model manuals; DVI may require a separate audio connection.
- The TV has only HDMI and the player only analog outputs: investigate a compatible converter or use a DVD player with HDMI output. Do not assume an adapter improves image quality.
