To connect a Chromebook to a TV, use a compatible video cable or adapter, then choose whether to mirror the laptop screen in ChromeOS display settings. For a wireless option, use Chromecast screen sharing to cast a Chrome tab or the whole desktop. The right method depends on your Chromebook’s ports and whether you want a wired display or wireless sharing.

How do I connect my Chromebook to my TV with a cable?

First check the video output on your Chromebook and the available input on the TV. Google lists HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA, and USB-C as possible connection types, but your Chromebook may not support every type. The cable or adapter must match both devices.

  1. Check both devices’ ports. If the Chromebook and TV both have HDMI, use an HDMI cable. If their ports differ, choose an adapter that converts the Chromebook’s output to an input on the TV. For example, a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is suitable only if that Chromebook’s USB-C port supports video output and the TV has HDMI.
  2. Connect the cable or adapter. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI or other input you used.
  3. Open display settings. In ChromeOS, go to Settings > Device > Displays. Google documents this path; labels can change, so check your Chromebook’s model instructions if your settings or ports differ.
  4. Choose how the screens behave. Select Mirror Built-in Display to show the same content on the TV. You can also select the external display and adjust supported options such as resolution or refresh rate. To show content only on the external display, Google says to hold the decrease-brightness key.

Which cable or adapter should I use?

Let the ports on your actual devices determine what to buy; not every Chromebook has HDMI, and USB-C does not automatically mean video output is supported. Check the Chromebook’s model documentation before choosing an adapter or cable.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  • HDMI cable: Use one when both Chromebook and TV have HDMI ports.
  • USB-C-to-HDMI adapter: Use one only when the Chromebook’s specific USB-C port supports display output and the TV has an HDMI input. The USB-C cable or adapter also needs to support the display connection.
  • Another port-matched adapter: If the Chromebook and TV use different supported ports, select an adapter that converts between those ports. Google gives DisplayPort-to-HDMI as an example.
  • Docking station: Consider one for a multi-display setup, not as a requirement for connecting a single TV. The number of external displays a dock can support depends on the Chromebook; Google recommends Works With Chromebook-certified docks.

Google’s external-device guidance also notes that USB-C cable performance matters when connecting a monitor or dock.

Can I connect a Chromebook to a TV wirelessly?

Yes. With a Chromecast or Android TV receiver, you can use Chrome to cast a browser tab or the whole screen. This is screen sharing; Google’s casting instructions do not promise the extended-workspace behavior of a wired external display.

  1. Prepare the receiver. Set up a Chromecast or Android TV device, connect it to the TV’s HDMI input, and select that input. If your TV already supports the applicable receiver, a separate streaming device may not be needed.
  2. Make sure the prerequisites are met. Google lists Chromecast or Android TV, the newest version of ChromeOS, and a TV with HDMI input. Its desktop-casting steps call for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on.
  3. Start casting. In Chrome, open More > Cast and choose whether to cast the current tab or the whole screen. Google also documents casting from the desktop through the status area’s available cast-device flow.
  4. Stop when finished. Use the casting controls to end screen sharing.

Should I use a wired connection or Chromecast?

Option What it does What you need to check
HDMI cable or port-matched adapter Connects the Chromebook directly to the TV; ChromeOS offers display settings and mirroring. Both devices need compatible ports. For USB-C, confirm that the Chromebook port supports video output.
Chromecast or Android TV casting Shares a Chrome tab or the Chromebook desktop wirelessly. Use a supported receiver, current ChromeOS, and a TV with HDMI input; desktop-casting instructions call for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on.

Choose wired HDMI or an adapter when you want a direct display connection and the ports match. Choose casting when you want to share a tab or desktop without running a cable. If you need a larger work area rather than a copy of the laptop screen, check your Chromebook’s wired display settings and model capabilities; do not assume wireless casting provides an extended desktop.

What if the TV is not detected over USB-C?

  • Verify video output on that port. USB-C describes the connector, not guaranteed display capability. Check the documentation for your Chromebook model.
  • Check the cable or adapter. It must support the display connection. For the ChromeOS error “Cable may not support displays,” Google recommends replacing the cable with one rated SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or higher.
  • Confirm the TV input. Make sure the TV is on and set to the input where the cable or receiver is connected.
  • Review supported display features. Available resolution, refresh rate, and the number of external displays vary by Chromebook and connected equipment.

Google’s monitor connection help and external-device guidance cover cable and display compatibility. For further model-specific information, see Google’s guide to using a Chromebook at home.
