To correct the fallback location Windows uses, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location. Under Default location, select Set default, choose the correct spot on the map or enter an address, and select Save. This sets a fallback; it does not necessarily override a more precise location Windows detects.
Set or remove Windows 11’s default location
Windows can use a default location when it cannot detect a more exact one. Microsoft recommends setting it for desktop computers and devices without Wi-Fi. For full instructions, see Microsoft’s Windows location service and privacy guidance.
- Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- Under Default location, select Set default.
- Choose the device’s actual location on the map or enter its address.
- Select Save.
- Reopen the app or Windows feature that showed the wrong city and check its location. Apps do not all use the default location in the same way, so saving a fallback is not a guarantee that every app will change.
To remove the fallback, return to Default location, clear the saved address, and save the change.

Check location services and app permissions
A correct default address may not resolve the issue if location access is disabled. On the Settings > Privacy & security > Location page, check the device-wide Location services control and the separate Let apps access your location control for your user account. The device-wide setting may require administrator access. If location services are off, changing the user-level app permission will not turn them back on.

When the controls are available, make sure the affected listed app has access. Some listed apps also have an individual precise-location control. Device-wide availability and individual app permissions are separate: location services can be on while one app is blocked.
Why Windows may still show another city
The default location is a fallback, not always the location Windows prefers. Windows may estimate location using a combination of GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points and routers, cell towers, and the device’s IP address. Which signals are available—and the device’s capabilities—affects the estimate. If Windows can detect a more exact location, it may use that rather than the saved default. Microsoft describes these inputs in its location service and privacy guidance; it does not provide a universal accuracy figure.

Location services may also send de-identified location information to Microsoft to improve the service. Microsoft identifies HERE and Skyhook as provider partners on that support page.
Troubleshoot by where the wrong location appears
Windows features and multiple apps show the wrong city
Set or correct the default location, then verify that location services are enabled and available to apps. If the computer has no useful location signals, the saved default can provide a fallback. GPS is one possible location input, but Microsoft’s guidance does not endorse a particular USB GPS receiver or establish its compatibility or setup; check device compatibility before considering external hardware.

Only one app shows the wrong place
Check that app’s own location and privacy settings. Desktop apps may not appear in Windows’ app permission lists and may handle location data differently. Microsoft explains this in Windows desktop apps and privacy. If the app is a website, also check the site’s location permission in your browser. Review the app’s privacy policy if you need to understand how it uses location data.
Location settings are unavailable or managed
On a workplace-managed or workplace-used PC, an administrator can control location settings. Windows may display a notice that settings are managed by the organization. Contact the organization’s IT administrator to ask whether policy prevents changing location access or the default.

Location history and privacy in Windows 11
Microsoft says local location-history storage and its associated settings were removed in March 2025. Location may still be periodically saved to the cloud for people signed in with a Microsoft account when location services are enabled. Microsoft says cloud location activity can be cleared through Microsoft account privacy controls. These history details are separate from setting a default location: removing a saved fallback address does not itself clear cloud activity.
