Use the Xbox Accessories app to configure button mappings and stick sensitivity curves on an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The controller stores up to three custom profiles alongside its default profile; assign a setup to a slot, then use the controller’s Profile button to switch. Paddle assignments and app-based stick adjustments are digital settings, while stick tension and thumbstick shape are changed physically.
What you need and where configuration works
This guide covers the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. Xbox lists profile configuration and button mapping through the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. Although the controller can connect to other devices, that does not mean the app’s full configuration features are available on mobile or every connected device. See Xbox’s Elite Series 2 product information and Xbox Design Lab’s Series 2 feature page.
Connect and power on the controller. For Windows PC, Xbox’s keyboard-mapping walkthrough specifies a USB connection or Xbox Wireless Adapter for that workflow; use those connection methods if configuring keyboard mappings on PC. App labels may change, so follow the wording shown in your current version of Xbox Accessories.
Create or edit a profile in Xbox Accessories
- Open Xbox Accessories. Select the connected Elite Series 2 in the app.
- Choose Configure. Create a new profile or open an existing one. Xbox’s documented walkthrough uses this general flow; the app’s current labels may differ.
- Select a control to change. Assign the button mapping you want, including a paddle assignment, or adjust available stick and trigger settings.
- Adjust the settings that belong in the app. Use the sensitivity curve for stick response. The app also supports button mapping and deadzone options. To change which physical stick’s input controls a side, use the left/right stick swap option if available in the app.
- Save or finish, then assign the profile to a slot. Make sure it is stored in Slot 1, Slot 2, or Slot 3 so you can select it from the controller.
- Test it in the intended game. A remapping may feel or function differently depending on the game’s own control settings. Keyboard mappings in particular depend on game support, as Xbox notes in its keyboard button-mapping walkthrough.
Xbox’s walkthrough is for keyboard mapping, so it documents the broad Configure-and-assign flow rather than every current screen for paddle or stick setup. Refer to the current app interface for the control-specific options.

Assign paddles to useful actions
In Xbox Accessories, select a paddle in the profile editor and map it to the button or supported input you want. A paddle duplicates an input at your fingertips, which can let you keep your thumbs on the sticks during a game. Choose an action you often need while aiming or moving, rather than assuming one mapping suits every game.
Xbox Wire offers A as an example: “Mapping a paddle to ‘A’ is usually a safe bet (‘jump’ in most FPS or action games).” That is general Xbox editorial guidance, not a requirement or a guarantee for every game. Start with one paddle if the layout feels unfamiliar, then add another only if it helps. Xbox Wire’s Series 2 setup guidance also discusses adapting mappings and controls to the player and game.

Switch profiles or return to default
The Series 2 holds up to three custom profiles and one default profile. Once a custom setup is saved to a slot, press the controller’s Profile button to cycle among the custom profile slots. The controller’s indicator shows which profile is selected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo return to default behavior, hold the Profile button for several seconds. Xbox’s Series 2 guidance says this restores the default mapping, removes custom remaps, and disables paddles. Check the indicator and try the controls before starting a match if you are unsure which profile is active.

Choose the right thumbstick and trigger adjustments
There are two distinct ways to change stick feel: software settings in Xbox Accessories and physical adjustments on the controller. Changing one does not make the other unnecessary; pick what addresses the issue you notice in play.
| What you want to change | Where to change it | When it may help |
|---|---|---|
| How quickly the stick responds to movement | Xbox Accessories sensitivity curve | A quicker curve may suit some action games; slower, more gradual movement may suit careful stealth movement. |
| Resistance as you move the stick | Physical adjustment with the included tool; Xbox lists three tension settings | More tension may help a player who tends to overshoot and wants more controlled adjustments. |
| Stick height or shape | Swap the interchangeable thumbstick for another included shape | Xbox suggests a taller right stick as an option for more controlled aiming adjustments. |
| Which stick controls left or right input | Xbox Accessories stick-swap option | Useful when you want the controller’s left and right stick inputs reversed. |
| Trigger travel and activation | Choose among the controller’s three physical trigger-depth levels; adjust trigger deadzones in the app | Shallower travel may suit rapid repeated shots in some shooters; gradual pressure may be preferable for racing or other uses that need finer input. |
Xbox presents these as customizable choices, not universal recommendations. For example, its 2019 guidance suggests setting the left-stick curve to Instant for quicker response in certain action games, while a stealth game may call for more gradual nudges. Treat that as a starting point and adjust after playing.

- For aiming while moving: Try assigning a frequently used action, such as jump where A performs that action, to a paddle. Start with one if learning several at once feels awkward.
- For controlled right-stick aim: If you overshoot, consider more physical stick tension or a taller right thumbstick, then adjust the app curve if needed.
- For fast movement inputs: A quicker left-stick curve can suit some action games, but slower movement may be easier to control for stealth.
- For triggers: Shallower physical travel may suit rapid shots; a game that benefits from gradual pressure may work better with a less aggressive trigger setup.
These are Xbox’s examples and suggestions, not tested best settings for every player. Change one control at a time and try it in the game you intend to play; game-level settings can alter how a mapped control behaves.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot a profile that does not behave as expected
- The paddles do nothing: Confirm that a custom profile is active, the paddle has an assignment in that profile, and you have not returned to default mode, which disables paddles.
- The wrong mapping is active: Check the controller’s profile indicator and press the Profile button to select the intended slot. Reopen that slot in Xbox Accessories if the saved mapping needs correction.
- A stick feels wrong after changing the curve: Separate the software response curve from physical tension and stick shape. Revisit the app curve independently from the physical adjustments.
- A keyboard mapping does not work in a game: Xbox notes that keyboard button mapping depends on support in the game. Verify the game supports the mapped input rather than assuming the controller profile is at fault.
