For the cited Trenz Zynqberry designs, open U-Boot’s PetaLinux settings with petalinux-config -c u-boot. To keep changes through rebuilds, put maintained options in the project user layer as directed by the guide for your PetaLinux release—not in generated configuration files. The right environment storage, boot sequence and memory offsets depend on the exact TE0726 or TE0727 design, board variant and release.

Before changing U-Boot settings

Start with the PetaLinux project and exported hardware design (XSA) that match your target Zynqberry reference design. Trenz’s TE0726 Demo1 instructions call out the hardware export and project paths; build images are placed in the project’s images/linux directory. See Trenz TE0726 Zynqberry Demo1 documentation.

  • Identify the exact module, package and board revision, plus the carrier board.
  • Confirm the exported XSA and the installed PetaLinux release.
  • Check the DDR size, intended boot mode and whether U-Boot variables must persist after power-off.

These details affect which configuration and boot flow are appropriate; the cited examples do not establish one universal Zynqberry setup.

Open the U-Boot component configuration

  1. In a terminal, change to the PetaLinux project directory for the target hardware.
  2. Run petalinux-config -c u-boot to open U-Boot’s component configuration. Trenz documents this command for its TE0726 and TE0727 examples; AMD’s component examples use the same command pattern. See Trenz TE0727 Demo1 documentation and AMD’s PetaLinux component examples for 2021.2.
  3. Review the settings for the specific design, make the required changes, then save and exit.

Choose the U-Boot environment behavior deliberately

Trenz’s TE0727 Demo1 and TE0726 Demo3 examples enable CONFIG_ENV_IS_NOWHERE=y and disable CONFIG_ENV_IS_IN_SPI_FLASH. These are example choices, not default settings to apply to every Zynqberry. A nowhere environment does not provide persistent saved U-Boot variables. If your boot process relies on variables surviving a reboot or power cycle, select an environment-storage option supported by the actual flash layout and your PetaLinux release, and verify that configuration for the target design. Keep configuration changes across rebuilds

Do not edit generated U-Boot configuration files directly. AMD’s PetaLinux Tools Reference Guide (UG1144), version 2018.2, warns: “CAUTION! config.cfg and platform-auto.h files are automatically generated; do not edit these files.” It documents adding CONFIG options in the project user layer’s platform-top.h. Follow the corresponding guide for your installed release, since the v2018.2 path details are not guaranteed to apply unchanged to current PetaLinux. See AMD/Xilinx UG1144 v2018.2.

Rebuild U-Boot and package the boot image

UG1144 v2018.2 gives this U-Boot rebuild command:

petalinux-build -c u-boot

After the build, package the boot image with petalinux-package --boot and the boot components required by your target generation and boot flow; the guide’s pattern includes the --u-boot option. Consult the release-matched guide and board reference for the exact package command and components. Trenz’s instructions distinguish QSPI and SD responsibilities for their examples, so a generic package invocation is not enough to determine a board’s complete boot sequence.

Match boot media and offsets to the board design

TE0727 Demo1

Trenz states that the documented CLG225 configuration cannot boot directly from SD through the ROM bootloader. Its example uses QSPI as the primary boot medium and SD for later files. Treat that as a limitation of the cited configuration, not a rule for all Zynqberry hardware. See TE0727 Demo1 documentation.

TE0726 Demo1 memory variants

Trenz’s Demo1 documentation says that the Netboot Offset must be reduced manually for its 128 MB and 64 MB variants, but directs readers to its configuration reference for the specific values. Do not substitute offsets from a different demo design. See TE0726 Demo1 documentation.

TE0726 Demo3 memory variants

For its own design, Trenz lists a netboot offset of 0x2000000 for the 64 MB variant and 0x4000000 for the 128 MB variant. These are design- and memory-specific values, not general TE0726 settings. See TE0726 Demo3 documentation.

Do not assume a template or defconfig is the board answer

Template settings and named defconfigs are defaults for their particular platform and release, not proof of the correct U-Boot configuration for a Zynqberry design. For example, Xilinx’s 2024.1 generic Zynq template names xilinx_zynq_virt_defconfig; AMD’s 2021.2 component example illustrates defconfig selection with a ZynqMP ZCU102. Neither identifies the appropriate defconfig for every TE0726 or TE0727 project. Sources: Xilinx 2024.1 Zynq template configuration and AMD 2021.2 component examples.

Verify the resulting boot path

Before relying on the image, check that its boot components, media roles, environment behavior and memory offsets agree with the exact board revision, carrier, DDR size, exported XSA and PetaLinux release. For a design whose ROM cannot access the intended medium directly, configure the documented primary boot medium and place later boot files where the board’s reference flow expects them.
