In Windows 11, the control you need is called Input volume, not gain. You find it in the properties of your selected microphone under Settings > System > Sound > Input. Adjust the slider, record a short test, play it back, and repeat until your voice sounds clear without clipping. Microsoft does not publish a single correct slider value, because the right setting depends on your device and what the recording sounds like.
What Windows 11 calls the gain control
Many microphone guides use the word “gain” for the amount of amplification applied to the incoming signal. Windows 11’s Sound settings do not use that term. The slider that sets how strongly the system amplifies your microphone is labeled Input volume, and Microsoft’s support instructions refer to it only by that name. Treat the two terms as the same job for this task.
Not every microphone exposes the same controls. Some devices and drivers add a separate boost or enhancement option in the device’s own properties. Microsoft’s general Windows 11 steps do not cover those extra controls, so if you see one, follow the manufacturer’s documentation for it. The steps below use only what Windows 11 provides.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Set the input level step by step
Connect the microphone before you start. Windows will not list a device that is not connected, and changing the slider on the wrong device wastes time.

- Select Stop test, then select Play to hear the recorded sample.
- If the sample is too quiet or too loud, move the Input volume slider, then repeat steps 3 and 4.
Stop when the recording is audible without strain and your loudest words do not distort. Microsoft’s own instruction is short: “Adjust the Input volume slider if needed.” The test-and-listen loop is what tells you whether the change helped.
How to judge the level without a number

- Too quiet: your voice is faint or needs the speaker to turn up the volume to be heard, so raise the slider in small steps.
- Too loud or clipped: loud syllables sound harsh or cut off, so lower the slider.
- Background noise dominates: raising the slider will amplify the noise too. Move the microphone closer to your mouth before adding more gain.
- Acceptable: your voice is the clearest sound in the sample and the level stays steady when you speak louder or softer.
Test again after any change of position, headset, or app, because the same slider can produce a different result in a different setup.

Confirm the right device is selected and connected
Go to Settings > System > Sound > Input and confirm that the device you are speaking into is the one selected. Check the cable or USB connection, and make sure a headset or microphone is positioned correctly in front of your mouth. Microsoft recommends running the test and listening to the recorded sample after each change.
Check the mute control
If your microphone or headset has a physical mute switch or button, make sure it is off. A muted device will record silence no matter how high the Input volume is set.

Reinstall the audio device driver

- Open Device Manager and expand Audio inputs and outputs.
- Right-click the microphone and select Uninstall device.
- Restart the PC, reconnect the microphone, and let Windows reinstall the device.
- If the device still behaves poorly, right-click it again, select Update driver, and follow the prompts.
Where the device came from a laptop or headset maker, check that manufacturer’s support site for a driver specific to your hardware. The generic Windows driver may not expose every option the manufacturer provides.

When a built-in microphone is not enough
If the built-in microphone stays too quiet or picks up too much room noise even after the steps above, an external microphone or headset is a practical option. Microsoft’s voice-typing troubleshooting guidance suggests trying a headset or external microphone in that situation. You do not need new hardware to follow the Windows settings procedure. If you do buy one, check that it connects to your PC and suits how you plan to use it, then run the same test-and-play loop on the new device.
Voice typing is started with Windows + H. If dictation is your reason for changing the level, test the microphone in a short voice-typing session as well as in the Sound settings test.
Notes on what is verified
These steps apply to Windows 11. Several of the Microsoft support pages also cover Windows 10, but menu names and device options can differ there. Microsoft’s support documentation was checked as of early October 2026. Settings labels and device-specific controls can change with Windows updates, drivers, and hardware, so if a label on your screen differs, look for the same control under the same section.
