Start by selecting the right microphone and testing a recording in Settings > System > Sound > Input. Adjust input volume there if needed. For speech filtering, use Voice access’s separate recognition settings: they affect Voice access, not every Windows app. Device audio enhancements are a third, manufacturer-dependent control, best treated as a troubleshooting option.
1. Select and test the microphone Windows should use
A clear recording starts with the intended input device. A laptop may have several choices, such as its built-in microphone, a webcam mic, or a connected headset.
- Connect or pair the microphone. For a Bluetooth microphone, use Add device if it is not already connected.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and find the device under Input.
- Select the microphone to open its properties. Under Input settings, choose Start test, speak normally, then choose Stop test.
- Play the recorded sample. If it is too quiet or too loud, adjust Input volume and test again.
This built-in test helps establish whether Windows is receiving a usable signal before you change filtering or other device settings. Microsoft’s instructions are in How to set up and test microphones in Windows.
2. Treat device audio enhancements as a troubleshooting step
If the microphone produces no signal or sounds unexpectedly distorted, inspect its device-specific audio enhancements. Their names and location can vary with the PC or microphone manufacturer; disabling them is not a guaranteed way to improve clarity.

- Return to the selected microphone’s properties in Settings > System > Sound > Input.
- Open Additional device properties.
- Depending on the available tabs, either open Enhancements and select Disable all enhancements or Disable all sound effects, or open Advanced and turn off Enable audio enhancements.
- Test the microphone again. If Windows lists multiple input devices, check the relevant device properties for each one.
Microsoft notes that audio enhancements, sometimes called APOs, can be a reason for seeing no signal during a microphone test. See Disable Audio Enhancements.
3. Choose a Voice access filtering mode for speech recognition
Voice access has its own filtering controls to help its speech-recognition feature distinguish commands from surrounding sound. They do not act as a universal noise-suppression switch for calls, recordings, or other Windows apps.

- Open the Voice access settings menu from the Voice access bar.
- Select Improve speech recognition.
- Choose the mode that fits the sound around you:

You can change the mode later from the same menu. Microsoft cautions that Voice Isolation may not prevent recognition errors in very noisy surroundings, and overlapping or similarly sounding speakers can still be picked up. In quiet surroundings, the difference may be small. Microsoft says the downloaded model runs on-device, creates a locally stored voice signature, and does not save or upload raw voice recordings. 4. Check permissions and routing when an app cannot hear you
A microphone can pass its Windows test and still be unavailable to a particular app because the input is routed elsewhere or access is blocked.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Check that Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone are on, and that the relevant app has permission.
- For traditional desktop programs, check Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- In Settings > System > Sound > Input, confirm the intended microphone is selected. Check that a headset is connected and not muted.
- If Windows does not detect the device, run the input troubleshooter or check the device driver.

This is a playback-format setting, not a microphone-clarity control. On supported PCs, Windows may allow stereo playback while a compatible Bluetooth LE Audio microphone is in use. Microsoft’s guidance requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer (build 26100.4484 or newer is also mentioned), factory-integrated Bluetooth LE support, suitable manufacturer drivers, and compatible LE Audio headphones, earbuds, speakers, or assistive hearing devices.

On a supported setup, open Settings > System > Sound, select the Bluetooth LE Audio output device, and inspect Format when microphone is active. Stereo provides two channels; mono provides one. If playback glitches, Microsoft suggests trying mono. If the control is absent, that PC, driver, or accessory setup may not support the feature. See Use Bluetooth LE Audio with Windows 11.
