A Focus session in Windows 11 is a timed work block. When it starts, Do Not Disturb turns on, taskbar app badges and flashing are temporarily suppressed, and a Focus period appears on screen. You set the defaults in Settings > System > Focus, then start a session from Settings, from the taskbar clock and notification area, or from the Clock app.

Set your session defaults in Settings

The main preferences live in Settings > System > Focus, as described in Microsoft Support’s guide to Focus and in Microsoft’s accessibility guidance on focusing on tasks.

  1. Open Settings > System > Focus.
  2. Set the session duration.
  3. Choose whether to show the timer in Clock, hide taskbar app badges, hide taskbar app flashing, and turn on Do Not Disturb. These options apply to future sessions.
  4. Select Start focus session.

Ways to start a session

You can start a session from the settings page above, but you do not need to change any preferences first. Two other entry points are available.

Start from the Clock app

  1. Open the Clock app.
  2. Open Focus sessions.
  3. Choose a duration and decide whether to include breaks.
  4. Start the session.

Start from the taskbar

  1. Select the taskbar clock or the notification bell. You can also press Windows key + N.
  2. Choose a duration.
  3. Select Focus.

Ending a session early

A session can end before its timer runs out. Windows sends a notification when a session ends, whether it finished on schedule or was stopped early.

What changes during a session

While a session runs, Do Not Disturb is on and taskbar app badges and flashing are suppressed. Notifications that arrive during the session are not lost. They remain reviewable in Notification Center, which you can open with Windows key + N.

Session preferences versus notification settings

Two separate areas control this behaviour, and they do different jobs. Session preferences decide what a Focus session does. Notification settings decide how Do Not Disturb behaves on its own, outside any session. Notification details, including automatic triggers and priority notifications, are covered in Microsoft Support’s article on notifications and Do Not Disturb.

Why Do Not Disturb stays on after a session

This is the most common surprise. Do Not Disturb is turned on automatically when a session starts, but Windows does not turn it off at the end of the session if it was already on beforehand. To check the current state, open Settings > System > Notifications and review the Do Not Disturb options there.

Microsoft Support states: “When you start a focus session, do not disturb turns on automatically to silence your notifications.” The source does not name an individual author.

Optional Clock integrations

Clock can connect to two outside services. Neither is required to configure or run a Focus session.

  • Spotify: In Clock, open Focus sessions and link a Spotify account. Then choose a playlist or podcast. Microsoft says the selected audio plays when the session starts.
  • Microsoft To Do: Connect a task list to Clock and select tasks to work on before you start a session.

Limits of the published guidance

Microsoft’s pages describe current Windows 11 behaviour, but they do not list which editions, builds, or regions include each control. If a setting described here is not visible on your PC, treat the Microsoft pages linked in this article as the reference for what the feature is meant to do, and check your own Windows version before assuming a layout will match.
