There you can turn AutoPlay on or off, choose a default action for Removable drive, and choose a separate default for memory cards. Microsoft’s current support guidance describes this page as the place to set AutoPlay defaults for removable drives and memory cards.
Open the AutoPlay page
- Click Start, then select Settings.
- In the left pane, select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select AutoPlay.
If you do not see the AutoPlay entry, use the Settings search box and type AutoPlay. The label and its position can shift between Windows 11 builds, so follow the name on your screen if it differs from the steps above.
Understand the three controls
The AutoPlay page separates a master switch from the per-device defaults. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

Microsoft’s Windows Backup Settings Catalog lists the master switch separately from the category defaults, so turning off the master switch is not the same as choosing a different action for removable drives. Microsoft Support, Windows Backup Settings Catalog

Change the removable drive behavior
- On the AutoPlay page, confirm that Use AutoPlay for all media and devices is switched on if you want Windows to respond when a drive is connected. Switch it off if you want no automatic action at all.
- Open the Removable drive menu.
- Select the action you want from the choices listed on your PC. The list can vary with your Windows version and the device you connect, so choose from what you see rather than a fixed set of options.
- Close Settings. The change applies the next time you connect a removable drive.
Change memory card behavior separately
Memory cards have their own default menu on the same page. If you use an SD card in a laptop or card reader and want different behavior from USB drives, change the Memory card menu instead of the removable drive menu.
Stopping automatic opening versus removing a drive safely
AutoPlay only decides what Windows does when it recognizes media or a device. It does not protect data when you unplug a drive. Microsoft advises using Safely Remove Hardware before disconnecting removable hardware such as USB flash drives and external hard drives, to avoid losing data. - Use the system tray Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon, select the drive, and wait for the confirmation that it is safe to remove.
- Only then unplug the drive.
- Changing AutoPlay settings never replaces this step.
Microsoft’s support pages describe these controls as they stand in the current Windows 11 release. Menu labels and available actions can change with later updates, so if a label differs, look for the AutoPlay page under Bluetooth & devices and work from the options shown there.
