To compress a video for email, export a smaller copy—usually by lowering its resolution—then check the new file size against your email account’s attachment limit. If the video is still too large, upload it to cloud storage and email a sharing link instead. Keep the original so you can try another export without losing quality.
Check your email attachment limit first
There is no single attachment limit that works for every email account. Limits vary by provider and account type, and a workplace administrator may set a different policy. Check the sending account’s rules before choosing an export size; the recipient’s service may also have its own restrictions.

These limits are service-specific, not a guaranteed target for every sender and recipient. For a work account, check your organization’s published policy or ask its administrator.

Compression for email means creating a smaller rendition of the video. A lower-resolution export is a practical first step: it reduces the amount of image detail the file needs to store, though the result may look less sharp. Keep the original and review the exported copy before sending.

- Open the video in an editor. On iPhone, Apple documents an iMovie workflow for sharing or exporting a video. You can also use another editor that lets you choose export resolution. See Apple’s instructions for compressing a video on iPhone.
- Choose a lower resolution. Export a separate copy at a resolution that suits how the recipient will watch it. Apple’s iMovie email-sharing flow lets you choose a resolution aimed at bringing the file below your mail service’s limit. See Apple’s iMovie sharing and export instructions.
- Check the exported file’s actual size. Do not assume a particular resolution will produce a particular file size. The result depends on the source video and export settings.
- If it is still too large, adjust and export again. Try a lower resolution or trim footage the recipient does not need. Check the size of each new export before attaching it.
Apple’s iMovie guidance recommends keeping an email attachment below 10 MB in its workflow, or below the limit for your email service. That 10 MB recommendation is not a universal email cap; use your account’s actual limit as the target.
Choose between another export and a cloud link
If the compressed file still exceeds the limit—or the quality loss would be too noticeable—upload the original or a suitable export to cloud storage and send a sharing link. - Use a smaller export when the recipient needs the video as an attachment and the reduced detail is acceptable.
- Use a cloud link when the file remains too large or you want to preserve more of the original quality. The recipient must be able to access the file through the link.
Before sending, check the sharing permissions and test that the link opens as intended. For sensitive or work videos, follow your organization’s rules for where files may be stored and who may access them.

Will putting the video in a ZIP file help?
It may, but do not count on it for video. Microsoft notes that compressing an attachment can reduce its size, but a video may already be stored in a compressed format, so a ZIP archive may make little difference. Test the ZIP’s actual size before relying on it to meet an email limit. If it is still too large, use a smaller export or a cloud link.
