There is no universal winner between a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) and natural-gas backup generators for a data center. The correct choice depends on the critical IT and facility load, the outage duration you must survive, fuel and charging assumptions, reliability of the complete electrical system, site constraints, emissions boundary and project economics.
Start by defining the resilience duty at one facility. Keep that separate from a utility or customer decision about procuring electricity for the wider grid. EPRI’s 2026 scenarios, for example, model system-wide supply portfolios; they do not determine which backup architecture belongs at a particular data center.
Define the decision before comparing technologies
A backup comparison can answer two different questions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Facility resilience: Which equipment keeps a defined critical load operating when the grid fails?
- Electricity supply procurement: Which resources should serve a data center’s broader electricity demand, on site or through the grid?
This article addresses the first question while explaining where the second can affect assumptions. A utility-scale BESS or gas plant used for grid services, peak reduction or normal-time generation should not be evaluated with the same operating model as equipment reserved solely for emergencies.

Write the design case in measurable terms
Before requesting prices, document:
- Critical load in megawatts (MW), including cooling, pumps, controls, networking and other auxiliaries that must remain energized.
- Whether the backup serves the whole facility or only a defined critical subset.
- Required ride-through and backup duration, from seconds and minutes through hours, days or a two-week extreme-outage study.
- Allowable transfer time, voltage and frequency limits, black-start requirements and restart sequencing.
- Whether the equipment operates only during outages or also when the grid is healthy.
- Fuel delivery, battery charging and replenishment assumptions during a prolonged regional event.
NREL’s resilience guidance identifies critical load, anticipated outage duration and the value of avoided interruption as starting points. A national baseline cannot tell you which values apply to your site.
Understand what a battery is being sized to do
A BESS has two separate sizing dimensions: power (MW) and stored energy (MWh). Power determines the instantaneous load it can serve. Energy determines how long it can serve that load after accounting for operating limits, reserve margin, temperature, degradation and conversion losses.
Use the delivered-load calculation
For a constant critical load, the first screening calculation is:
required delivered energy (MWh) = critical load (MW) × required duration (hours)
For example, a 20 MW critical load held for four hours requires 80 MWh delivered to the load. That is not automatically an 80 MWh nameplate purchase: usable state-of-charge limits, degradation reserves and conversion losses must be added in the detailed design.
The 2025 National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) models utility-scale lithium-ion storage at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 hours. Those are modeled cases, not a claim that a data center needs any particular duration. The same ATB assumes 85% round-trip efficiency, based on Cole et al. (2025). At that assumption, delivering 80 MWh over a complete charge-discharge cycle requires about 94.1 MWh of charging energy before additional design margins.
Specify power behavior, not just duration
Ask vendors to state continuous and short-duration power, inverter overload capability, reactive-power support, ramp rate, fault-current behavior, harmonic performance and black-start capability. A battery that has sufficient MWh but cannot meet motor-starting, protection or transient requirements is not an adequate backup system.

- One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
- Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
- Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
- Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
- Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.
State the minimum state of charge reserved for an outage, the charging window available before an event, and how much energy remains after one or more dispatches. If the BESS also performs peak shaving or frequency services, those operations can reduce the energy available when an outage begins unless an explicit reserve policy prevents it.
Describe what natural-gas backup must sustain
A gas backup plant is usually specified by generator output, number of units, redundancy arrangement, fuel supply and operating duration rather than by a finite MWh tank. Its apparent long endurance still depends on pipeline pressure, local distribution, contractual priority, compressor power, weather, maintenance and the ability to operate islanded from the grid.
Questions for a gas design
- What net MW is available after auxiliaries, cooling and power-quality equipment?
- How many units can fail without dropping the critical load (for example, an N+1 or 2N arrangement)?
- Is the gas supply firm, interruptible or backed by on-site fuel or dual-fuel capability?
- What happens if the utility gas network loses pressure during the same event that causes an electric outage?
- How often can the plant start, synchronize, transfer load and run at partial load?
- What testing schedule, overhaul interval and spare-parts plan support the required availability?
A nominally unlimited fuel source is not the same as guaranteed fuel availability. Model the common-cause scenario in which an outage, severe weather or civil disruption affects both electric and gas infrastructure.
Compare reliability as a complete backup system
Reliability belongs to the chain that serves the load: energy resource, switchgear, transformers, protection, controls, distribution paths, cooling, communications, operating procedures and human response. NREL’s 2023 report on distributed-energy-resource reliability warns against assuming that the resource itself is perfect. As Jeffrey Marqusee and Andrew Stringer write, “DERs are assumed to be 100% reliable, with the only concern being the availability of fuel.” They caution that this can produce gross errors, particularly for long-duration outages.

Model the outage sequence
- Identify the initiating event and the portion of the utility service that is unavailable.
- Model detection, transfer, isolation and black-start timing.
- Apply component failure probabilities to inverters or engines, switchgear, transformers, controls, cooling and communications.
- Include maintenance outages, start failures, trips, fuel or charging unavailability and operator actions.
- Calculate the probability that the critical load remains served for every hour of the design event.
- Test common-cause cases, such as a site fire, flood, gas-pressure loss, substation failure or control-network outage.
NREL’s 2023 estimates cover outage durations from one hour to two weeks and include natural-gas prime generators and lithium-ion BESS, among other resources. The published landing-page material does not provide a universal failure-rate ranking for gas versus batteries, and the analysis is not a data-center-specific design. Do not claim that one technology is categorically more reliable.
Redundancy choices differ by technology
A BESS can be divided into multiple racks, containers, inverters and medium-voltage blocks, allowing some failed modules to be isolated. A generator plant can use several engines so that one unit is unavailable while others carry the load. In either case, the benefit depends on independent electrical paths, protection coordination, fire separation, controls and a tested operating procedure.
For outages lasting beyond the battery’s modeled duration, specify the replenishment strategy: grid recharge, mobile generation, additional battery blocks, load shedding or a transition to another resource. For gas, specify fuel continuity and maintenance during the event rather than assuming the first start guarantees multi-day service.

Compare costs on the same basis
The 2025 ATB separates battery energy cost (dollars per kWh) from system power cost (dollars per kW) and provides modeled capital, operations and performance assumptions. Use those values as screening inputs, not as a bid for a data-center project.

Do not turn a national baseline into a project quote
ATB figures are scenario-based technology assumptions spanning generation and storage. They do not include every local interconnection, labor, permitting, financing, fuel contract or data-center redundancy requirement. Obtain site-specific engineering and commercial bids before making a final selection.
Compare emissions with a declared boundary
State whether the comparison covers direct operating emissions, full lifecycle emissions or both. A gas generator’s combustion emissions cannot fairly be compared with battery manufacturing emissions alone.
NLR’s lifecycle-emissions dataset covers natural gas and lithium-ion storage across upstream, ongoing combustion, ongoing non-combustion, downstream and total lifecycle stages. For a BESS, disclose the electricity source used to charge it, round-trip losses and dispatch pattern. A battery charged with a high-carbon grid mix has a different operational profile from one charged with low-emitting electricity; there is no single emissions value that applies to every site.

An NLR 2019 study comparing natural gas and diesel generators found that modeled failure-likelihood differences between those fuels were small in most regions and sensitive to assumptions. It also found that more frequent operation was associated with higher modeled reliability and lower net cost in the configurations studied, while noting that emergency-only operation can be preferred for permitting, noise and air-quality reasons. Those findings are gas-versus-diesel evidence, not proof that gas is better or worse than a BESS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for how the equipment operates when the grid is available
Emergency-only equipment may have lower normal-time emissions and fewer operating hours, but it receives less real-world exercising. Assets that operate regularly can create energy or capacity value and reveal faults through use, while adding fuel, degradation, maintenance and permitting exposure.
Set an explicit reserve policy
For a BESS, define the minimum state of charge that must be held for an outage and who can authorize dispatch below it. For gas units, define testing hours, minimum loading, synchronization rules and the conditions under which non-emergency generation is allowed. Put these rules in the operating model used for cost and reliability calculations.
Keep wider electricity forecasts in context
EPRI’s Powering Intelligence 2026 models how policy and data-center procurement goals could change system-wide generation portfolios. Under its reference policies, it projects 6.6–13.7 GW per year of natural-gas capacity additions from 2025 through 2030. It also projects data centers could consume 9%–17% of U.S. electricity by 2030, compared with 4%–5% today. These are scenario projections, not observed outcomes or backup requirements for an individual facility.
In scenarios where data centers pursue 24/7 carbon-free-energy objectives, EPRI models a shift toward low-emitting resources and storage. That context can influence a company’s electricity-procurement strategy, but it does not settle the engineering choice between a BESS and gas generators at one site.
A practical comparison workflow
- Define the critical load. List every IT and facility load that must remain online, with MW values and growth assumptions.
- Choose outage cases. Model short interruptions, the expected outage, a severe-weather event and a long-duration case. State whether load shedding is allowed.
- Create equivalent technology designs. For the BESS, specify MW, usable MWh, duration, reserve and recharge plan. For gas, specify net MW, unit redundancy, fuel contract and modeled runtime.
- Build the system reliability model. Include switching, distribution, controls, cooling, maintenance, start failures, fuel or charging availability and operator actions.
- Price the complete life cycle. Use consistent financing, project life, O&M, augmentation or overhaul, fuel and charging, interconnection, permitting and residual-value assumptions.
- Publish the emissions boundary. Separate direct operation from lifecycle results and identify the charging mix, gas-supply assumptions and runtime.
- Screen the site. Confirm land, fire safety, noise, air permitting, gas service, interconnection and emergency access with the relevant authorities.
- Test sensitivities. Vary outage duration, load growth, gas price, electricity price, charging mix, battery degradation, fuel curtailment and equipment failure.
- Request comparable bids. Require vendors to quote the same critical load, duration, availability target, transfer time, warranty, service level and operating restrictions.
When a hybrid design is the better comparison
The realistic alternative may be neither “all battery” nor “all gas.” A BESS can provide immediate ride-through, seamless transfer and short-duration power while generators supply longer outages. Conversely, a larger BESS paired with load shedding or mobile generation can reduce generator runtime. Evaluate the hybrid as its own system: shared switchgear, controls, protection, fuel or charging dependencies and failure modes must be modeled rather than adding nameplate capacities together.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing nameplate power only: ignores duration, usable energy and auxiliary loads.
- Assuming a battery’s rated hours are guaranteed: ignores state-of-charge limits, degradation, temperature and reserve policy.
- Calling gas fuel “unlimited”: ignores pipeline pressure, contracts, curtailment and common-cause events.
- Using component reliability as system reliability: omits switchgear, controls, distribution and human procedures.
- Mixing lifecycle and operational emissions: produces an invalid boundary comparison.
- Using ATB values as a quote: omits local labor, permitting, financing, interconnection and site-specific design.
- Using EPRI supply scenarios as a backup recommendation: confuses regional electricity planning with facility resilience.
- Ignoring normal-time dispatch: misses the effect of testing, revenue operation, maintenance and reserve availability.
What to require in a final investment decision
A defensible decision package should include a one-line diagram, critical-load schedule, outage-duration cases, reliability model, site and permitting register, lifecycle cost model, emissions accounting memo, operating procedures, maintenance plan, fuel or charging strategy and sensitivity results. It should state which assumptions are measured at the site, which come from vendor guarantees and which are planning estimates.
The final recommendation may be a BESS, gas generators, a hybrid or a staged deployment. The evidence does not support a blanket claim that one is always cheaper, more reliable or lower-emitting. The choice is sound only when both technologies are tested against the same load, outage, reliability target, operating duty and site constraints.
