To compare trading platform fees, estimate the full cost of the same trading activity on each platform—not just the advertised commission. Include the bid–ask spread, account and service charges, currency conversion, financing, and any exchange or statutory fees that apply to your country, account, product, and pricing plan.

Define the comparison before looking at prices

A fee comparison is meaningful only when the platforms are priced for the same use case. Write down the assumptions you will use for each provider:

  • Country and account type: Broker charges, taxes, and available plans vary by jurisdiction and legal entity.
  • Market and instrument: For example, a share, exchange-traded fund, option, forex pair, index product, or commodity may have different charges.
  • Order size and frequency: Record the amount or number of units per trade and how often you expect to trade.
  • Trade pattern: State whether you are comparing a buy, a sale, or a complete buy-and-sell round trip.
  • Holding period: Include whether you expect to hold overnight or for longer, especially for leveraged products.
  • Account currency: Note whether trades or deposits require conversion into another currency.

If your activity is uncertain, compare at least two scenarios, such as occasional use and your expected typical use. That helps reveal whether a recurring account fee matters more than a per-trade charge, or whether frequent trading makes small transaction costs add up.

Read the fee schedule for the right entity, account, and product

Use each provider’s current fee schedule and account disclosures, and record the date you checked them. Confirm that the document applies to your country, the provider’s relevant legal entity, your account type, the instrument you plan to trade, and the pricing plan you qualify for. An overview page may not include every product-specific or third-party charge.

The U.S. investor education resource Investor.gov advises: “Read the fee schedule or other fee disclosure and ask questions to understand all the fees you are charged and why.” Its guidance also suggests asking, “Do you have a fee schedule that lists all of the fees that will be charged for investments and maintenance of this account?” and “Are there any other transaction or advisory fees?” These are useful prompts, but the relevant terminology and disclosures may differ outside the United States. See Investor.gov’s investment-fee guidance and its Investor Bulletin on investment fees.

Calculate spread and commission together

The spread is the difference between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell. It can be a cost even when the platform advertises no separate commission. For a fair comparison, record the spread basis and the commission for the same instrument, order size, and trade pattern; do not compare one provider’s spread for one product with another provider’s commission for a different product.

Where a provider quotes a spread in price units or points rather than a cash amount, convert it using the instrument’s contract or unit size and your planned trade size. If the provider’s disclosure does not give enough information to estimate that cost, mark it as not stated and ask the provider rather than guessing. Add commission separately where charged, including any charge that applies to each side of a round trip.

Provider examples illustrate why the details matter. IG’s UK charges information describes spreads for indices, commodities, and forex, share commissions, currency conversion, and financing or interest for positions. These terms and examples are specific to its UK products and can change; they do not establish costs for another jurisdiction or provider. Its page also displayed a risk warning that 69% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading spread bets and CFDs with IG; the year was not stated in the retrieved page, and the figure applies to that provider’s specified products rather than trading or investing generally. Check the current applicable disclosure before relying on it. See IG’s UK charges page.

  • BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
  • THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
  • NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). You never stare at a blank page.
  • RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
  • BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.

Add costs beyond trading

Once you have estimated spread and commission, check which of these charges apply to your comparison. Keep recurring charges separate from costs triggered by a trade, service, or account event.

  • Currency conversion: Check how the provider converts trades, proceeds, or account balances in a different currency, and what rate or charge applies.
  • Financing or overnight interest: Include applicable financing for leveraged or overnight positions. Whether it applies, and how it is calculated, depends on the product and provider terms.
  • Exchange, statutory, and third-party charges: These may be charged in addition to brokerage. Zerodha’s India-specific schedule, for example, separates brokerage from government, statutory, and exchange charges and notes that statutory transaction charges can exceed brokerage in some circumstances. Indian charge names and amounts should not be carried over to other markets. See Zerodha’s India fee schedule.
  • Account and platform charges: Look for maintenance, platform-use, minimum-balance, inactivity, and paid data or service fees.
  • Funding and account-exit charges: Check for payment, wire, withdrawal, transfer, and account-closing fees.
  • Advisory or product charges: Distinguish the cost of maintaining the account from fees attached to a specific investment product or advisory service.

Investor.gov lists possible broker charges beyond commissions, including platform use, maintenance, inactivity, minimum balance, transfer, account closing, and wire fees. Its guidance also distinguishes transaction-based brokerage accounts from recurring asset-based advisory accounts. The full schedule matters because a low transaction charge does not tell you what it costs to open, maintain, fund, transfer, or close an account.

Build a side-by-side comparison

Use a table to compare identical activity assumptions. Fill in each row from the applicable disclosure; if a charge is not disclosed, write “not stated” and identify the source you checked instead of treating it as zero.

Comparison item Platform A Platform B
Country, legal entity, account type, and plan Record the applicable details and disclosure date Record the applicable details and disclosure date
Instrument, market, order size, and frequency Use the same assumptions for both platforms Use the same assumptions for both platforms
Spread basis and estimated spread cost Record the disclosed basis and calculation, or “not stated” with source Record the disclosed basis and calculation, or “not stated” with source
Commission Record per trade or per side, as applicable Record per trade or per side, as applicable
Currency conversion Record rate or method and when conversion applies Record rate or method and when conversion applies
Financing or overnight costs Record applicable terms for the planned holding period Record applicable terms for the planned holding period
Exchange, statutory, or third-party charges Record charges that apply to the instrument and market Record charges that apply to the instrument and market
Recurring account, platform, and data charges Record billing basis and any eligibility or minimum conditions Record billing basis and any eligibility or minimum conditions
Funding, withdrawal, transfer, and closure Record applicable charges and conditions Record applicable charges and conditions

Estimate costs for the same number of trades and the same holding period, then add applicable recurring charges for the period you are comparing. Do not add a fee that does not apply to your case, but do not silently omit a charge because it is listed outside the headline pricing. The result is a scenario estimate, not a universal measure of which provider is cheapest.

Interpret “zero commission” and plan claims carefully

“Zero commission” describes only a particular commission charge under stated conditions; it does not mean the trade or account is free. The spread, option contract charges, currency conversion, exchange charges, or account services may still cost money.

For example, Fidelity’s U.S. pricing page advertises $0 online commissions for specified U.S. stock, ETF, and option trades while also stating that option contract fees apply and listing other charges. The relevant product and fee-schedule qualifications matter. See Fidelity’s U.S. commissions and fees.

Interactive Brokers’ pricing overview distinguishes plans and eligibility and directs customers to product-specific third-party charges and disclosures. Treat the overview as plan- and product-specific, not as an all-in guarantee for every trade. See Interactive Brokers’ pricing overview.

Check the estimate before you decide

  1. Confirm eligibility: Verify the country, legal entity, account, instrument, and plan shown in each disclosure match your circumstances.
  2. Use matching assumptions: Compare the same order size, trade frequency, buy/sell pattern, currency, and holding period.
  3. Separate fixed and variable costs: Identify recurring account or data charges separately from per-trade and event-based fees.
  4. Resolve missing figures: Ask the provider about any unclear or unstated charge, including how spreads, currency conversion, or financing are calculated.
  5. Recheck the terms: Fee schedules and provider risk disclosures can change. Review the current disclosure close to the date you make your decision.
