To compare gaming consoles fairly, estimate what each one will cost your household over the same period—not just its checkout price. Add the games you expect to buy, any subscription and accessories you actually need, electricity, and a repair or replacement allowance. Keep possible resale proceeds separate so they remain an adjustable estimate.
Build a like-for-like cost estimate
Choose a period, such as three or five years, and use it for every console. State whether you assume one console for the whole period or include a possible replacement or upgrade; neither period is a universal console lifespan. Compare the same local market, currency, household use, and game basket. Use current local retailer prices for a purchase decision, and label manufacturer suggested retail prices (MSRPs) as dated reference points rather than live quotes.
- Record the exact console configuration and purchase cost. Include the model, storage capacity, disc drive or digital-only format, and any bundle, tax, refurbished status, or promotion included in your estimate.
- Price the games you expect to play. Make a list of titles and likely purchase dates. Compare the same titles at comparable points in their pricing—not one console’s launch prices against another’s sale prices—and account for whether you plan to buy physical or digital copies.
- Add only subscriptions the household needs. Note the tier, individual or family membership, renewal period, and features or game catalogues you value. Do not assume every player needs a premium plan.
- Count necessary accessories and storage. Include only items missing from the box and items you do not already own. Treat extra storage as optional unless your planned library and available capacity make it necessary.
- Estimate electricity from your use. Multiply power in watts by hours used, divide by 1,000, then multiply by your local electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Record the assumed hours and tariff.
- Allow for warranty, repairs, or replacement. Check the terms for the exact model and your jurisdiction. If costs are uncertain, use a clearly labeled range or reserve rather than presenting an unsupported repair figure.
- Show resale separately. If you expect to sell the console, state the assumed amount as a separate estimate so readers can see the total before and after potential resale.
Worksheet: total over the chosen period = console purchase + games + subscriptions + needed accessories and storage + electricity + repair or replacement reserve. Subtract estimated resale proceeds only when displaying a separate after-resale estimate.
Use dated prices as reference points, not current quotes
Prices vary by country, retailer, date, bundle, and promotion. These manufacturer-announced US figures help show why the exact model and date belong in any comparison; they are not a complete current price list.

Sony’s April 2026 announcement attributed its increases to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” in a statement by Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment. The dated announcement is a reminder to avoid treating an older MSRP as a current checkout price. Read Sony’s price announcement.
Count subscriptions according to actual use
Nintendo’s US annual Nintendo Switch Online prices displayed on October 4, 2026, were $19.99 for an individual standard membership and $49.99 for an individual Expansion Pack membership. Family memberships were $34.99 and $79.99, respectively. These are market- and date-specific annual prices; Nintendo says pricing depends on country and membership duration. Confirm local terms, renewal settings, and family sharing before using them. Nintendo also says online play is available for compatible games, so do not count it as a requirement for every title or household.
Compare the subscription tier that matches the household’s intended play, not the most expensive tier by default. If a family plan is shared, record who will use it and how its cost is allocated in your comparison. Nintendo’s membership details and displayed terms are on its Nintendo Switch Online page; broader service terms can be checked on the Nintendo online services page.

Account for disc format, storage, and existing accessories
Hardware features can change which costs are relevant without determining which library will be cheapest for you. Microsoft describes Xbox Series X as offering native 4K output and a UHD Blu-ray disc player. Series S is disc-free, designed for 1440p with upscaling to 4K, and offered in 512 GB or 1 TB SSD configurations. A disc drive gives buyers physical-game options; a digital-only model makes available storage and digital purchasing habits more salient. Neither fact proves that one person’s games will cost less on a particular console.
Microsoft says Series X includes one controller and that Series X|S supports most Xbox One controllers and gaming accessories. Existing compatible equipment can reduce what a household needs to buy, so do not add a replacement controller automatically. Microsoft also identifies the Seagate 1 TB Storage Expansion Card as an option that adds storage at the console’s custom-SSD performance. Include its cost only if the planned library and built-in capacity make expansion relevant. See Microsoft’s Xbox console comparison for model details.
Estimate electricity transparently
Microsoft reports global average game power of 122 W for Xbox Series X and 61 W for Series S, plus average app power of 51 W and 31 W, respectively. Microsoft says these averages come from console telemetry and are periodically updated; the platform-baseline page was accessed October 4, 2026. Sony’s cited European and UK samples show PS5 gaming power ranging from below 100 W to around 200 W. Sony cautions that consumption varies by console, region, game, and session. Neither set of manufacturer-reported values is a guaranteed reading for an individual household.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
For an illustrative calculation, 122 W × 10 hours ÷ 1,000 = 1.22 kWh. Multiply that consumption by the household’s actual price per kWh to estimate the electricity cost for those ten hours at that power level. This is a calculation example, not a prediction of a console’s measured draw or a bill estimate. Use hours that reflect your play pattern, and account for app use or rest-mode consumption only if you have a suitable figure for your model and settings.

Do not use these figures to declare a strict Xbox-versus-PlayStation efficiency winner: the manufacturers’ data have different scopes and methods. Hours of use, game, settings, and local tariff all affect the resulting cost.

Warranty duration and coverage depend on the console model and where it is sold. Check the manufacturer’s terms for your jurisdiction before assigning a value. Sony says it offers warranty and out-of-warranty console repair service, but its cited service page does not establish a comparable repair price or a warranty duration for every market. Do not treat service availability as a repair-cost estimate. Sony’s repair and service information is one place to check applicable options.

If you cannot confidently estimate repairs or resale, show low and high assumptions or leave those items out and state that they are excluded. A resale estimate is not guaranteed proceeds; keeping it separate makes the estimate easier to adjust.
Make the comparison useful to your household
For each option, keep a record of the exact configuration, local purchase price and date, game list and purchase timing, subscription tier, accessories already owned, assumed hours and electricity tariff, and any repair or resale assumptions. Where prices or usage are uncertain, present a range rather than a single precise-looking total. There is no universal cheapest console: format preferences, game selection, existing equipment, online needs, play time, electricity rates, and local pricing can change the outcome.
