On Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP list, the Galaxy S26 with 256GB costs $899.99 and the Galaxy S25 with 256GB costs $859.99—a $40 difference before taxes, offers, trade-ins, financing, or service costs. To find which phone is actually cheaper for you, compare the same storage capacity over the same ownership period and count only discounts and credits you qualify for and expect to receive.
Start with the same storage capacity
Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP list gives these unlocked prices:

On a like-for-like 256GB comparison, the S26’s listed MSRP is $40 higher. Comparing the least expensive listed models instead—S25 128GB at $799.99 and S26 256GB at $899.99—produces a $100 gap, but the S26 also has twice the storage. These are manufacturer list prices, not a guarantee of what you will pay; Samsung says prices may change without notice.
Samsung’s S26 announcement set a US starting price of $899.99 and said general availability began March 11, 2026. A Samsung product page accessed for this comparison displayed the 256GB S26 at $799.99 against $899.99, but it was an AT&T-configured page. That is a page-specific offer, not evidence of a current unlocked price or an Amazon price. Check the configuration and checkout price for the seller you plan to use.

Calculate the cost over your ownership period
Use the same number of months for both phones and include the costs that differ between your two choices:
Total cost = device payments after eligible discounts and trade-in + financing charges + required plan cost + mandatory fees and taxes + protection or upgrade charges − credits actually received.

Set an ownership period—for example, the number of months you expect to keep the phone—and use actual quotes for each option. If you will keep, resell, or trade in a phone at the end, record that end value separately and subtract it only when you have a supportable estimate. If your service plan would cost the same with either unlocked phone, exclude that shared cost from the comparison; it does not change which device costs less.
A simple MSRP-only example
For two unlocked 256GB phones, the Samsung March 2026 list prices differ by $40 before tax. That arithmetic is not a final-cost estimate: it does not include a checkout offer, trade-in, tax, financing, accessories, or a carrier plan. Compare unlocked purchases and carrier deals on equal terms
Unlocked purchase
Record the price for the exact storage capacity, any discount you qualify for, sales tax, shipping, and other mandatory checkout fees. Compare the two phones with the same service plan and ownership period. If you would keep your existing plan either way, its cost is shared rather than an S26-versus-S25 difference.
Carrier financing and bill credits
A carrier’s advertised phone price may depend on a qualifying trade-in, a particular plan, installment payments, or monthly bill credits. For each phone, write down the required plan and its cost over the period you will remain committed, the trade-in’s eligibility and condition rules, the installment term, each credit’s amount and schedule, taxes due at checkout, and any activation or other mandatory fees. Include credits only to the extent you expect to qualify for and receive them.

Check the offer’s terms for what happens if you cancel the line, change plans, or pay off the device early. A credit that stops when you leave the carrier is not equivalent to an upfront discount if you may leave before it is fully applied. Compare the total dollars under the conditions you expect to meet, not the advertised monthly payment alone.

Financing
Compare total repayment under the rate and term disclosed for your account. Samsung’s financing notes on its New Galaxy Club page say pay-over-time rates can range from 0% to 36% APR; Affirm Pay in 4 is listed at 0% APR subject to eligibility and availability. Neither statement establishes the rate you will receive. Use your actual disclosed terms and include any financing cost in the worksheet.

Upgrade programs and protection
Do not treat an upgrade-program fee as a universal phone cost. Samsung’s New Galaxy Club page gives example monthly charges of $6.20 for an eligible Galaxy S25 and $8.33 for eligible S25+ or S25 Ultra enrollment; it says at least 12 monthly payments are required before a program upgrade. The page limits the program to selected S25 models purchased before June 20, 2025, and excludes carrier-financed purchases. It also says the program includes one year of Samsung Care+ benefits; beginning in month 13, the full then-current Care+ fee applies unless canceled. Confirm eligibility, the applicable model and purchase date, cancellation terms, any trade-in requirement, and remaining balance before adding a program cost to your calculation.
Add standalone Samsung Care+ or other protection only if you plan to buy it, and use the actual charge and coverage period. Include a replacement case as a possible transition cost if needed: Tom’s Guide’s March 2026 comparison reports the S26 is slightly larger and an S25 case will not fit the S26. Check the dimensions and compatibility of your specific case before assuming it must be replaced.

A lower purchase price does not settle whether an upgrade is worthwhile. Consider features that matter to you, but do not turn review tests into a guaranteed ownership outcome. Tom’s Guide measured 11 hours 54 minutes for the S25 and 11 hours 28 minutes for the S26 in its 5G web-refresh test at 150 nits. Its Geekbench comparison of North American Snapdragon versions recorded 3,531 versus 2,916 single-core and 10,778 versus 9,886 multicore for S26 and S25, respectively. Those are that publication’s test results, not a promise about your battery life or performance; the publication noted that international S26 versions use Exynos 2600 and that it had not tested an international model.

- Match storage capacity, purchase condition, and the ownership period for both phones.
- Save the dated checkout price for the exact configuration and seller; distinguish MSRP from a temporary offer.
- For a trade-in, verify the eligible model, condition, valuation, submission deadline, and whether the value is instant or credited monthly.
- For a carrier deal, calculate the required plan cost over the commitment and check how cancellation, plan changes, or early payoff affect credits.
- Add taxes, activation, shipping, and mandatory fees from checkout; use your own financing APR and total repayment.
- Add only protection, upgrade-program, and accessory costs you expect to pay, and subtract credits only when you expect to receive them.
- Use an evidence-based resale or trade-in estimate only if you expect to dispose of the phone at the end of the chosen period.
Samsung’s February 25, 2026 launch announcement described pre-order promotions running February 25–March 11, 2026, including up to $900 in eligible instant trade-in credit or a $150 Samsung credit for certain no-trade-in purchases. Those dates have passed, so do not count those launch offers as available now. The announcement said the $150 was for eligible additional products, could not be applied to the phone itself, had to be used in the same purchase, and was forfeited if the phone purchase was returned or canceled. Samsung also says its trade-in program cannot be combined with other Samsung, carrier, or retailer offers unless their terms expressly allow it. Verify current terms before including any promotion.
