To find out whether a Galaxy or an iPhone costs less, compare what you will actually pay over the same ownership period—not just the sticker price or advertised monthly payment. Match storage, service, and buying method; add device payments, wireless service, fees, protection and financing add-ons; then subtract only discounts you qualify for. Treat resale proceeds as a separate estimate.
Build a like-for-like ownership estimate
Choose a period, such as two or three years, and use the same number of lines, comparable data needs, and equivalent phone storage for both candidates. The core calculation is:
Total paid during ownership = net device payments + wireless service + required taxes, fees, and activation costs + protection or repair costs you expect to pay + financing or upgrade add-ons.

- Run two device scenarios: one with no trade-in and one using a trade-in value you are actually eligible to receive.
- Use your real carrier quote when possible. If you do not have one, state the location, line count, plan tier, and other assumptions behind the estimate.
- Compare the same purchase path. An unlocked, upfront price is not directly comparable to a carrier-connected offer with financing and plan requirements.
Separate device price from carrier deal
As a dated US price snapshot, accessed October 4, 2026, Samsung’s US store listed the unlocked Galaxy S26 at $799.99 for 256GB and $999.99 for 512GB. The page also showed former prices of $899.99 and $1,099.99, respectively, so treat the listed prices as a snapshot rather than stable MSRP. Check Samsung’s Galaxy S26 listing.
Apple’s US iPhone 17 page, also accessed October 4, 2026, listed $899 for 256GB and $1,099 for 512GB when connecting to a carrier later. Apple shows different carrier-connected offers and trade-in estimates, so do not mix those with the connect-later prices without accounting for their eligibility conditions. These device prices alone do not establish which phone is cheaper to own. Plan cost over the full period can outweigh the difference in phone price. Compare the plan you would actually buy, including its required tier, taxes, fees, and any changes to existing discounts.

Check the full cost and conditions of financing
A monthly payment can make a phone seem inexpensive while obscuring its full term. AT&T says smartphone installment payments break the phone’s cost into 36 monthly payments; its optional $6 monthly Next Up charge does not reduce the outstanding device balance. See AT&T’s installment-plan details.
For an offer that uses bill credits, distinguish the phone’s scheduled payments from the credits applied to the bill. AT&T’s 2026 Galaxy S26 promotion document describes discounts delivered in 36 monthly bill credits and requires an eligible device, a qualifying 0% APR 36-month installment plan, and an eligible AT&T unlimited plan. Check the promotion’s full terms at purchase; eligibility and exact plan requirements matter to the total.
Before treating a promotion as savings, calculate the no-promotion price and the required plan cost alongside the credit. Confirm whether you must keep the line or plan for the entire credit period, what happens to remaining device payments if you leave, and whether an early upgrade ends future credits. Include optional upgrade charges even if they do not reduce the phone balance.

Account for lock status and flexibility
Apple says an iPhone bought directly from Apple is generally unlocked. An iPhone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon’s device payment program remains locked to that carrier until fully paid. Apple’s listed connectivity discount is unavailable to customers who connect later or use prepaid service. These distinctions affect whether an advertised deal matches your intended purchase and how freely you can switch service. Review Apple’s purchase options before comparing them with carrier financing.
- Record whether each phone is unlocked or carrier-financed.
- Check payoff requirements and whether changing carriers stops future credits.
- Compare any connectivity discount only with the purchase route for which it is available.
Include protection, repairs, and resale as separate scenarios
Add protection only if you expect to buy it. Compare the premium and deductible with your own risk tolerance; a protection plan is not a universal cost of owning either phone. If you expect to pay for a repair instead, enter your own reasonable estimate rather than assuming one ecosystem has lower repair costs.
The available price and offer details do not establish matched long-term repair-frequency or resale-value differences between Galaxy phones and iPhones. Keep resale as an optional ownership-cost scenario, not a guaranteed discount, and do not assume either brand has a universal advantage without comparable evidence for the models and period you are considering.

Use a quote sheet before choosing
Fill this in for each phone from your actual checkout and carrier quotes. Use the same ownership period and service assumptions in both columns; write “not stated” where a quote does not provide a value.

Calculate net device cost as scheduled payments minus guaranteed discounts and eligible trade-in value. Add service for the full comparison period, then fees, protection or repair costs you expect to pay, and add-ons. If you plan to upgrade before the installments end, include the unpaid balance and any credits that would stop. Only after those totals are comparable should you decide which option costs less for your circumstances.
