Compare the FREELANDER 8 with a specific Defender or Discovery configuration—not with the name of an entire model line. FREELANDER is now a standalone brand jointly developed by JLR and Chery: JLR owns the brand and leads design, while Chery contributes intelligent technology and supply-chain capabilities, according to Chery Group’s October 2026 launch announcement. The announced FREELANDER 8 figures below apply to its Middle East model; they are not a substitute for market-specific specifications or an independent head-to-head test.
First, identify the vehicles you are actually comparing
“Defender” and “Discovery” each refer to a range of configurations, not one fixed specification. A useful comparison needs the market, model year, body style, trim, engine or powertrain, and—where relevant—seating layout for all three vehicles. Also distinguish Discovery from Discovery Sport; their specifications should not be combined.
Land Rover’s vehicle comparison tool can compare up to three vehicles. Land Rover cautions that specifications, options and availability vary by market, and says its figures are official EU test figures for comparison purposes; real-world results may differ. Its Defender range includes multiple body, trim and engine variants. For Discovery, start with the current model range and specifications. Local retailer confirmation is appropriate for the exact vehicle you intend to buy.

What has been announced for the FREELANDER 8?
Chery Group’s October 3, 2026 announcement introduced an international left-hand-drive FREELANDER 8 at a brand event in Abu Dhabi on September 29. It describes a Middle East-market powertrain and a set of capability figures. Treat these as manufacturer-reported specifications and claims for that market, not independently measured results or universal figures. Specifications may vary by market and trim.

These figures come from Chery Group’s October 2026 announcement. They are not independent real-world range results. For a fair energy-use comparison, check homologated figures for the same market and note the test cycle used for each vehicle; range numbers measured under different regional rules or cycles are not directly interchangeable.
Off-road capability and validation claims
Chery reports nine i-ATS driving modes, maximum ground clearance of 266 mm, a 70% grade-climb capability, water wading to 900 mm and the ability to pass an 800 mm cross-axle test. The announcement also describes a global validation programme involving more than 1,000 test vehicles, including over 200 all-terrain durability vehicles covering 2.15 million kilometres. These are company-reported specifications and programme totals, not independent comparative test results.

Cabin and assistance technology
The announcement says the cabin uses a Qualcomm SA8295P platform and that L2+ driver assistance with more than 30 assistance functions is standard. It also says Super Intelligent Valet Parking is available in selected markets and subject to conditions and driver responsibilities. Confirm feature availability, operating conditions and any connected-service terms in the market where the vehicle will be sold.
Compare the vehicles on the points that affect your use
Price and purchase timing
The cited launch announcement does not confirm a final FREELANDER 8 price or customer delivery timing. It says UAE customers could register interest and names Al Tayer Motors for Dubai and the Northern Emirates and Premier Motors for Abu Dhabi. That establishes a UAE launch path, not inventory, confirmed deliveries or availability elsewhere. Check current local pricing and availability for all three vehicles.
Powertrain and energy use
Compare the powertrain offered in your market, its official test-cycle consumption or range, and whether the FREELANDER 8’s hybrid system suits your charging and driving pattern. Keep Chery’s Middle East combined-cycle range claims separate from Defender or Discovery figures recorded under a different cycle or market standard.

Space, seating and family use
Use specifications for the exact body and seating configuration. Check overall dimensions, cargo capacity, access to any third row, and how much luggage space remains with all seats in use. The available specifications do not establish a complete, directly comparable set of these values across the three vehicles.

Off-road use
Compare ground clearance alongside approach and departure geometry, tyres, drive modes and wading depth for each exact configuration. Treat the FREELANDER 8 figures above as manufacturer claims; the available information does not establish independent head-to-head performance against a Defender or Discovery.
Towing, payload and roof carrying
Check the exact vehicle’s towing and payload limits and the roof-load limit for its configuration. Land Rover notes that optional equipment can affect vehicle weight and that roof-load limits vary by configuration. A roof rack’s compatibility also depends on vehicle body style and model year; do not assume an accessory listed for a Defender fits the FREELANDER 8.

Technology, assistance and ownership support
Confirm that driver-assistance and software features are available locally, and check any connected-service or subscription conditions. Land Rover notes that connected services and feature availability can depend on market and vehicle specification. For every brand, verify warranty terms and service coverage in the country where you plan to own the vehicle; the cited launch announcement does not establish these details for the FREELANDER 8.
