To compare two football clubs fairly, first match the reports’ periods, currencies, accounting basis and reporting entities. Then assess revenue and its sources, costs and earnings, cash and liquidity, debt and other obligations, equity, and the notes that explain the figures. No single total—especially revenue or wages—shows whether a club is financially healthy.
1. Make sure the reports are comparable
Use the latest audited reports available for both clubs, ideally covering the same season or financial year. Before comparing totals, record the following for each report:
- Reporting period: note the start and end dates. If the periods differ, say so and avoid treating the totals as directly comparable without explaining the difference.
- Reporting entity: check whether the statements cover the football club alone or a consolidated group. Group accounts may include subsidiaries such as stadium, media or other businesses.
- Currency and accounting framework: record the presentation currency and accounting basis. If you convert currencies, state the conversion date and method rather than silently converting the figures.
- Audit context: find the auditor’s opinion and note any qualification, emphasis or material-uncertainty language.
Official archives can help you locate the filings, but the report itself establishes its scope and accounting basis. FC Barcelona’s annual-report archive labels reports by season and says they include audited accounts. Manchester United’s annual-report archive lists reports by year; its 2025 report is a Form 20-F. Those labels alone do not settle the detailed reporting perimeter, so check each filing.
2. Compare revenue, its sources and its consistency
Start with total revenue, then break it down using the categories each club reports. These may include matchday, broadcasting, commercial and other revenue. Compare current-year figures with the prior-year comparatives, and use the report’s narrative and notes to understand major changes.

Consider whether revenue appears recurring or depends on conditions such as competition qualification, stadium availability or a one-off event. A higher total indicates greater reported scale for that period; it does not, by itself, establish stronger liquidity, profitability or resilience. UEFA’s framework treats solvency, football earnings and cost control as distinct considerations, rather than judging sustainability by revenue alone. See UEFA’s financial-sustainability guidance.
3. Compare costs and earnings on the same definitions
Review operating expenses, employee or player costs where disclosed separately, depreciation and amortisation, finance costs, and the reported profit or loss. Compare both amounts and ratios, but use the same numerator and denominator for both clubs and define them clearly.
A wage-to-revenue ratio can be a useful descriptive comparison if the reports define wages and revenue consistently. It is not automatically the UEFA squad-cost ratio. Transfer activity also affects different measures on different schedules: it can involve cash payments, player-registration amortisation, player-trading results and regulatory calculations.

4. Separate cash flow from profit, then examine liquidity
Read the cash-flow statement rather than assuming reported profit means cash is available to pay bills. Compare operating cash flow and cash and cash equivalents, then look at current assets and current liabilities to understand near-term resources and obligations.
Use the balance sheet and notes to distinguish borrowings from other liabilities. Where the reports provide them, examine trade payables, amounts due to other clubs, other financial liabilities, maturities, interest terms, security and overdue amounts. Keep transfer payables distinct from bank borrowing when the statements allow it. Call a measure “net debt” only if the report defines how it is calculated.
Categories matter: FC Barcelona’s 2024–25 consolidated accounts, with a balance-sheet date of 30 June 2025, present cash separately from current and non-current liability categories and debts to sports entities. The document states that notes 1–23 are integral to the balance sheet.
5. Put equity and losses in context
Assess equity and accumulated results alongside cash, debt and obligations. A one-year loss is not, by itself, proof of insolvency; a one-year profit does not prove that results are sustainable. Look for patterns across reporting periods and explanations in the accounts.

UEFA describes its football-earnings rule as comparing relevant income and expenses over three monitoring periods, with an acceptable deviation, and describes quarterly controls on overdue payables to other clubs, employees, UEFA, and social and tax authorities. A ratio calculated from annual-report figures cannot establish regulatory compliance on its own.
6. Read the notes before drawing a conclusion
Notes are part of the financial evidence, not optional background. Check accounting policies and relevant disclosures about player-registration amortisation, impairment, related parties, contingent liabilities, debt maturities, events after the balance-sheet date and exceptional items. These details can explain why apparently similar headline figures do not mean the same thing, or why a year’s result may not be representative.

After reviewing the notes, compare the clubs across the same set of axes:
| Axis | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting basis | Dates, currency, consolidation perimeter and accounting framework | Helps prevent unlike periods or entities being treated as identical. |
| Revenue | Total, mix, trend and dependence on competition or one-off items | Shows scale and source concentration, not resilience on its own. |
| Costs and earnings | Wages or personnel costs, operating costs, amortisation, finance costs and profit or loss | Shows how the revenue base translates into reported results. |
| Cash and liquidity | Operating cash flow, cash balance, current assets and current liabilities | Separates accounting earnings from near-term payment capacity. |
| Debt and obligations | Borrowings, transfer payables, other financial liabilities and maturities | Shows the type and timing of financing burdens. |
| Equity and regulation | Equity, football earnings, overdue payables and any separately calculated squad-cost measure | Connects balance-sheet condition with football-specific monitoring without conflating the tests. |
How UEFA’s squad-cost rule differs from a wage ratio
UEFA’s published guidance describes a permanent 70% squad-cost ceiling from 2025/26, following a phase-in of 90% in 2023/24 and 80% in 2024/25. UEFA’s stated scope includes spending on player and coach wages, transfers and agent fees. These are regulatory thresholds, not ordinary annual-report wage-to-revenue ratios.

Do not treat that calculation as interchangeable with a club’s annual-report revenue or a ratio you calculate yourself. Check the current regulation before making a claim about a club’s compliance.

Other tests are jurisdiction-specific. Manchester United’s filing also discusses the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules as a separate break-even test. That league’s test should not be generalized to clubs in other leagues, and current compliance claims require checking the applicable rules and period.
What a sound comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A careful comparison can show how two clubs differ in scale, revenue mix, cost structure, cash generation, obligations and reported equity over the periods examined. It cannot, from one headline figure or one annual report alone, prove which club is healthier in every sense. State the period and definitions used, explain material differences revealed by the notes, and keep regulatory tests distinct from accounting ratios.
