Compare the turnover a promotion actually requires—not just its advertised bonus amount. Check what the wagering multiplier applies to, calculate the resulting qualifying turnover, and then verify the odds floor, eligible bets, deadlines and withdrawal rules in the full terms. Those details determine whether two offers with similar headlines are meaningfully comparable.
Start by identifying the wagering base
A wagering requirement, also called a playthrough requirement, is the amount you must wager before restricted bonus funds or related winnings can be withdrawn. The multiplier alone does not tell you the amount: it may apply to the bonus only or to the deposit and bonus combined.
Use this calculation:
Required turnover = wagering base × multiplier
The Danish Gambling Authority illustrates why the base matters. Its examples are in Danish kroner and explain the arithmetic, not a universal rule for sportsbook promotions:
| Offer terms in the example | Calculation | Required turnover |
|---|---|---|
| DKK 100 bonus; 10× requirement applies to the bonus | DKK 100 × 10 | DKK 1,000 |
| DKK 100 deposit plus DKK 100 bonus; 10× applies to both | (DKK 100 + DKK 100) × 10 | DKK 2,000 |
For a separate illustration, the UK Gambling Commission used a £10 bonus with a 50× wagering requirement to show that £500 must be played through before winnings can be withdrawn. That is an example of turnover arithmetic, not a current offer recommendation. The Commission’s explanation of wagering requirements also describes Great Britain’s current regulatory limit, covered below.

Compare the odds floor separately
Find the exact minimum odds and establish which wagers it applies to: the qualifying bet, wagers made with bonus funds, or both. Do not assume that one sportsbook’s threshold—or any particular minimum—is standard across operators.
Then check which bet types, sports and markets count, and how the promotion treats voided, cancelled, refunded or cashed-out bets. A bet can meet the displayed odds requirement but still fail to qualify under other offer rules. The ASA/CAP guidance identifies minimum odds and bet type, alongside eligibility and time limits, as potentially significant promotion conditions. Read its guidance on free bets and bonuses.
Build an offer-by-offer comparison
Open each offer’s complete, current terms and record the same details. This makes hidden differences easier to spot than comparing headline amounts or multipliers alone.

| Condition | What to record |
|---|---|
| Bonus form and amount | Whether it is a cash-like bonus balance, free bet or token, and its stated value. |
| Multiplier and base | The multiplier and whether it applies to the bonus, deposit or combined amount. |
| Required turnover | The calculated total wager amount, using the stated base. |
| Odds | The precise minimum odds and whether the condition applies to each qualifying bet, bonus-funded bets or both. |
| Eligible wagers | Allowed sports, markets and bet types, plus rules for voids, refunds, cancellations and cashouts. |
| Eligibility and funding | Location, account or customer eligibility, qualifying deposit or first-bet conditions, and excluded payment methods or tokens. |
| Claim and timing | How and when to opt in, the qualifying period, settlement deadline and bonus expiry. |
| Withdrawal treatment | Whether bonus stake is returned with winnings, whether winnings can be withdrawn and when restrictions end. |
| Terms and jurisdiction | The current full promotion terms and the location whose rules govern the offer. |
For an example of why these rows matter, a BetMGM promotion page for New Jersey describes a $10 real-money qualifying bet and a $150 bonus-bet reward if that qualifying wager wins. Its terms also specify a seven-day qualification/expiry context, an odds floor, exclusions involving many promotional-fund bets, and that bonus bets cannot be withdrawn and their stake is not credited back if they win. Those are terms for that particular offer, not general sportsbook rules; check the promotion page for its current conditions before relying on them.

Check when the promotion must be disclosed
Before opting in, make sure you can find and understand the material conditions, including restrictions on funds and wagering. The UK Gambling Commission says promotion conditions should be clear, timely, intelligible, unambiguous, transparent, non-misleading and prominent alongside the headline offer. It also says full terms should be accessible before sign-up and that putting conditions only in general website terms is insufficient. See the Commission’s transparency guidance.
In Great Britain, ASA/CAP guidance says an ad should not call an offer “free” when a customer must risk their own money to qualify. It also says “risk-free” should be avoided unless the customer genuinely cannot lose their funds. These are advertising standards guidance points; the operator’s complete offer terms still determine how a specific promotion works.

Apply the rules only in the jurisdiction they cover
Great Britain: 10× cap effective 19 January 2026
The UK Gambling Commission says that, from 19 January 2026, licensed operators in Great Britain must not apply wagering requirements over 10 times to incentives that require customers to play through bonus funds. The Commission also announced a ban on mixed-product promotions conditioned on playing different forms of gambling, such as betting and slots. These are Great Britain rules, not a global sportsbook standard. Read the Commission’s announcement.

The Danish Gambling Authority says Danish law limits a playthrough requirement to 10 times, requires eligible games to contribute 100 percent, and requires a deposit-linked promotional measure to have the same value as the deposit. These provisions apply in Denmark; do not use them to interpret an offer governed by another jurisdiction. See the Danish authority’s explanation of offers and playthrough requirements.

Watch for terms that change after you begin
For sports-betting free-bet promotions, UK Gambling Commission guidance says restrictions introduced after a customer has started qualifying must not make completion materially harder. It gives a significant reduction in available markets or odds as an example. The guidance page was last updated on 15 February 2022; check the current guidance if this issue affects an offer you are completing.
Make the decision from the terms, not the headline
Before you opt in, confirm your eligibility and location, calculate turnover from the correct base, and verify odds, qualifying-bet rules, deadlines and the treatment of bonus stake and winnings. If a material condition is missing or unclear, do not treat the headline amount or multiplier as enough to compare the offer. Promotions and their terms can change, so check the live terms at the time you claim.
