To tell whether a Prime Day deal is genuinely worth buying, compare the exact same product and configuration at other retailers, then check the final checkout total, seller, return terms, warranty, and price history. A discount badge or a low Amazon price-history point is useful context—not proof that the offer is the best available now.
Start with the exact product, not just its name
Before comparing prices, make sure each listing is for the same item. Search by the manufacturer’s model number or another exact identifier, then verify the options that affect what you receive:
- Size, color, storage capacity, or other configuration
- Pack count and included accessories
- Condition: new, refurbished, or open-box
- Seller and warranty coverage
A similar-looking item or a different configuration is not a like-for-like comparison. For marketplace listings, check who is actually selling the product rather than assuming the retailer named on the site is the seller.

On Amazon, open the item’s Price History feature and review the available 30-, 90-, and 365-day views. Amazon says feature availability depends on the market: Price History is currently available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and India, while the 365-day view is rolling out in the U.S., U.K., and India. The graph can help answer “Is this the lowest price recently?” or “What was the price last Prime Day?” where the relevant history is available. Amazon explains its Price History feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Quickly compare price per item on product
- See which item is a better value per unit
- Helps save you money
- Compare prices while your in the aisle at the store
Look at both the recent and longer-range view. A brief price increase or a short-lived discount can distort the impression you get from a narrow window. The history is context for the item’s Amazon pricing; it does not show whether a different retailer has a lower price today.
For additional context, WIRED says it checks CamelCamelCamel and Keepa as price-history sources. These tools can help answer “Was it cheaper last Black Friday?” or “Is the Prime Day price lower than what it typically costs?” when they have relevant data. Their coverage is not complete: WIRED notes that some Lightning Deals may be missing from CamelCamelCamel history and that these services may not work consistently. If histories conflict or contain little data, treat the comparison as uncertain rather than calling a price the lowest ever. WIRED’s Prime Day FAQ discusses its approach and these limitations.

Check Amazon’s savings reference carefully
Amazon describes its List Price as a validated reference price. It says its Typical or “Was” Price is based on the median price customers paid over the previous 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. Amazon also says it aims to offer deals at its lowest price in at least the preceding 30 days. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its pricing methodology and its stated goal; they do not establish that Amazon’s current checkout price is lower than a competitor’s. Amazon describes how it presents deal prices.
A “was” or “regular” price comparison also needs context. The FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say a former price can provide a legitimate basis for comparison when it was “the actual, bona fide price” offered regularly for a reasonably substantial period. A discount label that looks unusual on its own is not enough to conclude that a particular retailer broke the law. FTC guidance on former-price comparisons.

Compare the live offers and the checkout total
Search the exact model number at several reputable retailers. For each matching offer, compare the details that determine what you will pay and receive:
- Checkout price: Apply any coupon and include shipping or delivery charges. Note whether a discount requires a membership or other condition.
- Availability and fulfillment: Confirm the item is in stock and check pickup or delivery terms.
- Seller and condition: Verify whether it is sold directly by the retailer or by a marketplace seller, and whether it is new, refurbished, or open-box.
- Returns and warranty: Compare the return window and warranty coverage; a lower price may come with less convenient terms.
The FTC recommends reading deal terms, consulting comparison-shopping sites, and checking whether a seller has a price-match policy. Treat price matching as something to verify in the retailer’s current policy, not a benefit you can assume. FTC advice on evaluating deals.

Use a repeatable comparison before buying
- Save the listing before the event. Record the exact model and configuration, seller, condition, and current price so you can recognize the same offer later.
- Review Amazon’s available history. Check the 30-, 90-, and, where enabled, 365-day views. Use the longer range alongside the recent one.
- Search the exact identifier elsewhere. Check several retailers and confirm that each listing is the same configuration and is actually available.
- Compare the amount due. Include shipping, discounts, required membership, and relevant return and warranty differences.
- Decide whether convenience changes the value. If offers are close, delivery speed, return convenience, seller reputation, or an applicable price-match policy may matter more than a small price gap.
This approach works for the U.S. Prime Big Deal Days event scheduled for October 6–7, 2026, as well as Prime Day and retailer promotions at other times. Amazon describes Prime Day as its summer event and Big Deal Days as a fall event; dates differ by country. Check the current dates and local terms for your market.
