Compare repairability scores only within the same scoring system—and, where relevant, the same scoring version. Then look past the headline rating to see how the repairs you are most likely to need work in practice: what must be removed, which tools are required, whether parts and instructions are available in your region, and whether software pairing or calibration is involved.
Why repairability scores can disagree
A repairability score is an assessment under a particular method, not a universal measure shared by every label or reviewer. The European Union’s A–E class, iFixit’s 0–10 score and France’s earlier 1–10 repairability index use different criteria and are not interchangeable. Do not convert a letter into a guessed number or rank one system directly against another.

The methods can also ask different questions. iFixit focuses on self-repair; the JRC method discussed in iFixit’s comparison assesses compliance with EU ecodesign requirements and explicitly considers both consumers and professional repairers. They differ in priority parts, repair agents, component weights and time horizons. Both consider design, parts and repair information, while the JRC approach also includes software updates over time. A difference between their results is not, by itself, evidence that one is wrong.

How to compare candidate phones
- Confirm the exact model and market. Model names can cover different variants, and rules or parts access depend on where the phone is sold. For a covered phone placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025, begin with its energy label and EPREL model details.
- Compare within one system. Put EU classes beside EU classes, or iFixit scores beside iFixit scores. Do not treat a French index score as equivalent to either.
- Check the assessment’s version and date. iFixit links listed phones to scorecard versions and says its criteria are updated as technology and design trends evolve. Its scores are intended to be compared readily with contemporaries; older scores may not be directly comparable with later assessments.
- Choose the repairs that matter to you. Inspect screen, battery, charging-port and back-cover or enclosure repairs. For a foldable, assess hinge and screen complexity separately. Cameras and buttons are also priority parts in the JRC method.
- Follow the full repair path. Check how the phone opens, whether adhesive or varied fasteners are used, which tools are needed, whether another fragile part must come out first, and what reassembly requires. A repair that begins easily may still be difficult if access or reassembly is complicated.
- Verify parts, instructions and software support. Look for manufacturer or endorsed-supplier instructions and parts for the exact model in your region. Check whether a replacement needs software calibration or parts pairing, and whether the required software access is available.
- Compare ownership factors separately. Check actual local repair prices and availability, warranty terms, software-support period, battery information, drop resistance and water protection. A repairability score does not answer all of these questions.
When two phones remain in contention, compare their same-system scores and versions alongside the battery and display repair paths, parts and documentation, local repair costs, update support and any pairing restrictions. Use separate durability information to judge drop and water resistance rather than assuming a repairability rating covers it.

What the EU label tells you—and what it does not
The European Commission’s phone and tablet label presents several distinct kinds of information: energy efficiency, battery endurance per charge, reliability under repeated falls, battery endurance in cycles, repairability and ingress protection. Read the repairability letter as one part of that picture, not as a proxy for battery life, drop resistance or water protection.
For covered products, Commission guidance says batteries must withstand at least 800 charge/discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of their initial capacity. This is a minimum requirement, not a test result for any particular phone. Model-level details should be checked rather than inferred from the general rule.

The rules also describe repair-related obligations for covered products, including critical spare-parts availability within 5–10 working days and for seven years after the model’s last placement on the EU market. They require OS upgrades to be available for at least five years from the end of placement of the last unit. These are defined obligations, not a guarantee that a specific part is in stock or affordable at the moment you need it. Software-update requirements are also distinct from the repairability class.
What repair paths reveal beyond a headline score
iFixit’s published methodology traces the replacement of critical components through disassembly and reassembly, accounts for proxy time and tool difficulty, and applies component weights. It says design for repairability accounts for 80% of its overall score. Its method also considers repair support: a replacement may not complete a functional repair if required software calibration or parts pairing is unavailable.

Its 2025 assessments illustrate why individual repair paths matter. iFixit’s Fairphone 6 entry describes adhesive-free screen and battery repairs that take only a few minutes, alongside easy disassembly, modularity, and parts and instructions from Fairphone. Its Pixel 10 entry says screen repairs are prioritized; other parts sit under back glass that does not require heat to remove; battery and charging-port repairs are easier than on earlier models; and Google provides parts and instructions. The entry also notes adhesive on many components. These are iFixit assessments, not independent laboratory results.
Other entries show different compromises rather than a simple ranking. iFixit’s 2025 iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro entries note Apple parts and instructions, while identifying multiple screw types and adhesive as complications. Its Nothing Phone 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 entries describe difficult openings, screen-repair challenges, limited parts or instructions, and added foldable complexity. The current iFixit score page and its linked scorecards can change; check the exact model entry and scorecard version before relying on any example.

What to do with the score when you choose
Use a score to narrow the field, then decide whether its strengths match the repairs and support you care about. A strong aggregate result cannot tell you whether a screen replacement is manageable, whether a battery is accessible, or whether parts can be obtained locally at a price you accept. Conversely, a lower result may reflect criteria or priorities that are less important to your likely use. Compare the model details and repair path, not just the letter or number.
