Compare military transports against the same mission, not by lining up their biggest published numbers. Specify the cargo weight and dimensions, route, runway surface and length, and operating conditions; then compare range at that load, cargo fit, and takeoff and landing performance separately. Published figures for the C-130J, A400M, C-17, and C-390 show why no single aircraft can be named the winner without those details.
Start with a mission, not a headline maximum
A range figure is meaningful only when its payload and mission assumptions are known. Maximum payload and maximum range are usually different operating points: an aircraft’s ferry or no-payload range does not tell you how far it can carry a useful load. Likewise, a short-field claim is not a runway-length guarantee for every weight, surface, temperature, or airfield.
Write down the mission before comparing aircraft:
- Cargo: mass, length, width, height, shape, and whether it needs a particular loading method.
- Route: distance, required reserves or holding fuel, and any stops or refueling assumptions.
- Airfield: runway length and width, paved or unpaved surface, condition, elevation, temperature, and obstacles.
- Performance metric: whether the constraint is takeoff, landing, or both, and the aircraft weight or payload associated with the figure.
- Mission role: whether the aircraft must deliver tactically to an austere field, move heavy cargo over strategic distances, or do both.
Use matched payload-range points where sources provide them. Keep ferry range separate, and do not infer a runway requirement from a general description such as “short-field capable.” A 2016 National Defense University Press payload-range chart illustrates how comparisons depend on assumptions: it uses no wind, a standard day, step climb, and one hour of holding fuel at destination. Those assumptions are useful to look for in any comparison, but the chart is not a current aircraft specification.

| Aircraft | Published payload and range | Runway or field figure | What the figure does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| C-130J-30 | 46,700 lb maximum payload; 2,160 nm at 40,000 lb payload (Lockheed Martin, October 2024). | 3,000 ft landing distance at 135,000 lb (Lockheed Martin, October 2024). | These are distinct load cases. The listed payload figures assume wing-relieving fuel; the landing distance is a landing metric at a stated aircraft weight. |
| Standard C-130J | 47,000 lb maximum payload; 1,980 nm at 40,000 lb payload (Lockheed Martin, October 2024). | 3,200 ft landing distance at 135,000 lb (Lockheed Martin, October 2024). | Do not treat this variant as identical to the longer C-130J-30. |
| A400M Atlas | 37,000 kg maximum payload; 20 tonnes to 3,400 nm (OCCAR and Airbus). | Airbus describes operation from short, soft, unpaved airstrips; a directly comparable runway-distance figure is not stated on the consulted Airbus page. | The maximum payload and 20-tonne range are different load cases. The field description is not a quantified runway comparison. |
| C-17 Globemaster III | 170,900 lb maximum payload; approximately 2,400 nm unrefueled at 164,900 lb payload and an initial cruise altitude of 28,000 ft (U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command). Boeing separately states more than 6,200 nm with no payload. | Air Mobility Command states the C-17 can use runways as short as 3,500 ft and 90 ft wide. | The two range figures represent heavily loaded and no-payload cases, respectively. The runway statement does not establish that every load can use the shortest stated runway. |
| C-390 Millennium / KC-390 | 26 tonnes to 1,080 nm; 23 tonnes to 1,470 nm (Embraer brochure). | Takeoff: 1,524 m for a 500 nm mission at sea level/ISA with 23 tonnes; 1,165 m for a 500 nm mission at sea level/ISA with 16 tonnes. Normal landing distance: 1,000 m at sea level/ISA with 26 tonnes. | These are brochure figures with stated conditions. Embraer separately describes a 4,000 ft semi-prepared soft strip case carrying 12 tonnes for 500 nm; it is not the same performance point as the takeoff-distance figures. |
These published figures are not a controlled head-to-head test. The C-130J and KC-390 values include particular weights, payloads, and performance metrics; the A400M field statement is descriptive rather than a distance; and the C-17 runway capability is not tied to every payload. Treat the table as a way to identify relevant operating points, not as a ranking.

Payload is not the same as cargo capacity
A load can be under an aircraft’s weight limit and still fail to fit or load safely. Check hold dimensions, door and ramp access, floor limits, and loading method—not just maximum payload. For the A400M, OCCAR lists a 340 m³ cargo hold, and Airbus describes a 4 m by 4 m cargo cross section. Those dimensions help assess whether bulky equipment can fit, but they do not replace checking the item’s exact dimensions and loading constraints.
For any candidate aircraft, ask whether the specified cargo can pass through the opening, be positioned and secured in the hold, and remain within applicable floor and ramp limits. The published figures in this comparison do not provide a full set of those loading limits for every aircraft, so they cannot by themselves confirm that a particular item will fit.

Interpret short-field performance by metric and conditions
Takeoff distance, landing distance, and operation from a semi-prepared strip answer different questions. Do not rank them as if they were the same test. A landing distance does not establish takeoff performance, and a stated takeoff distance does not prove that the aircraft can use an unpaved runway under the same conditions.
C-130J: tactical transport and rough-field role
Air Mobility Command describes the C-130 family as a tactical transport whose straight-wing, four-engine turboprop design supports low stall speed and short takeoff and landing performance. It says the family can operate in rough, unimproved landing zones. This describes the aircraft’s role and design; actual runway suitability still depends on the aircraft, load, and field conditions. Lockheed Martin’s C-130J-30 landing figure, for example, is specifically 3,000 ft at 135,000 lb.

A400M: strategic reach with tactical delivery claims
Airbus and OCCAR describe the A400M as combining strategic-distance transport with tactical delivery to short, soft, unpaved strips. Airbus’s statement is a manufacturer description, not an independent comparative finding. Because the consulted Airbus page does not give a runway-distance figure under conditions matched to the C-130J or C-390 figures, it does not support a precise short-field ranking.
C-17: heavy loads and a stated runway capability
Air Mobility Command lists a 3,500 ft by 90 ft runway capability, while Boeing describes operations at short, austere fields, including paved or unpaved strips. Neither statement means that the shortest runway is suitable at every payload, weather condition, or field elevation. Assess the specific load and airfield case rather than applying the runway figure universally.

C-390: distinguish standard-distance figures from the semi-prepared-strip case
Embraer’s brochure gives takeoff distances at sea level/ISA for a 500 nm mission at specified payloads, plus a normal landing distance at a stated payload. Its separate field-capability page describes normal operation from a 4,000 ft semi-prepared soft airstrip while carrying 12 metric tonnes for 500 nm, with soil and CBR conditions specified on that page. These are separate examples and should not be combined into a single performance point.

Use aircraft roles to narrow the comparison
The aircraft serve overlapping but distinct transport needs. Air Mobility Command characterizes the C-130 as a tactical transport for rough, unimproved landing zones. Airbus and OCCAR describe the A400M as combining tactical delivery with strategic reach. The C-17’s published maximum payload and heavy-load range figures address a larger-load case, alongside a stated short-runway capability. Embraer’s C-390 figures provide a medium-airlift reference with payload-range points and separately specified runway cases.

These role descriptions help identify which aircraft merit closer examination, but they do not substitute for a matched mission comparison. To decide whether an aircraft can carry a particular load to a particular field, you need compatible payload-range and runway data for that mission, plus cargo fit and operating constraints.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- Define the cargo and route. Record cargo mass and dimensions, the destination distance, required reserves, and whether the mission includes holding or refueling.
- Find a range point at the relevant payload. Keep the payload attached to the range number. Label no-payload or ferry range separately.
- Check that the cargo fits. Confirm hold and opening dimensions, loading access, and floor or ramp limits for the actual item.
- Separate takeoff from landing. Record which metric a runway figure represents and the aircraft weight or payload it assumes.
- Match the field conditions. Check surface type and condition, runway dimensions, elevation, temperature, obstacles, and any relevant soil criteria.
- Compare only like cases. If conditions differ or a source does not state a needed value, mark the gap rather than declaring a winner from incompatible figures.
