Compare Micron, Samsung Electronics, and SK hynix by memory-product mix, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) execution, earnings on matched reporting periods, capacity investment, and valuation under more than one earnings scenario. The latest reported results show powerful demand and exceptional profitability, but they cover different periods and do not establish which stock is best valued. Memory remains cyclical: strong current earnings can make a peak-cycle price-to-earnings ratio look deceptively low.

What makes these three memory investments different?

All three companies participate in memory markets, but they are not interchangeable bets. Product mix influences which demand trends and selling prices matter most; HBM milestones indicate execution in a fast-growing AI-related market; and company structure affects how much memory performance drives total results. Samsung Electronics is diversified beyond memory, while Micron and SK hynix results are more directly tied to memory markets.

Compare the companies across five questions: what they sell, how far HBM products have progressed, whether financial results cover comparable periods, how much capital is being committed to capacity, and what earnings assumptions are embedded in each share price. No single recent revenue or profit figure answers all five.

How do their products and HBM positions compare?

Micron: broad memory portfolio

Micron sells DRAM, NAND, and NOR in forms including components, modules, SSDs, managed NAND, multi-chip packages, and wafers. Its markets include data centers, client devices, graphics, industrial, mobile, automotive, consumer, and embedded applications. Its FY2025 filing describes HBM as a 3D-stacked DRAM architecture using through-silicon vias, designed for high bandwidth and lower power use relative to other memory types. Micron’s FY2025 filing provides company product and risk detail.

Samsung Electronics: memory within a diversified group

Samsung’s Q2 2026 release said its Memory Business achieved record quarterly revenue and operating profit, supported by a server-heavy mix. Samsung said it scaled HBM4 sales and shipped HBM4E samples to major customers. Those are company-reported milestones: samples are not the same as volume shipments, and neither statement by itself establishes yield, profitability at scale, or market share. Samsung also described constrained supply and strong server-centered demand in its second-half outlook; that is management’s outlook, not a guarantee. Samsung’s Q2 2026 results release distinguishes the memory business from consolidated company results.

SK hynix: HBM and server-related products

SK hynix attributed Q2 2026 performance to high-value products including HBM, AI-server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs (eSSDs). The company said it began HBM4 mass shipments in Q2 and planned capacity expansion while maintaining capex discipline. Its release also reported customer demand exceeding supply capabilities. These statements indicate execution and demand as described by the company, but they do not prove that current constraints will persist or that every added unit will earn attractive returns. SK hynix’s Q2 2026 release identifies the shipment and capacity statements.

How should you compare reported financial results?

First align reporting periods and segment scope. Micron’s latest figures here are for its fiscal year ended in 2026; Samsung and SK hynix figures are calendar Q2 2026. Do not treat them as three observations of the same quarter. Samsung’s consolidated results include businesses beyond memory, so they are not a memory-segment comparison.

Company and period Reported figures Scope and qualification
Micron, FY2026 Revenue: $133.188 billion; operating income: $99.340 billion; net capital expenditures: $27.37 billion Company-reported fiscal-year figures. Net capital expenditures are for the full year and are net of certain proceeds. Micron FY2026 release.
Samsung Electronics, Q2 2026 Consolidated revenue: KRW 171.5 trillion; consolidated operating profit: KRW 89.5 trillion Whole-company figures, not memory-segment totals. Samsung separately said its Memory Business had record quarterly revenue and operating profit; segment amounts are not stated in the cited release. Samsung Q2 2026 release.
SK hynix, Q2 2026 Revenue: KRW 79.3187 trillion; operating profit: KRW 60.5426 trillion; reported operating margin: 76% Company-reported preliminary results subject to change after independent audit. SK hynix Q2 2026 release.

Micron also reported $73.48 billion in cash, marketable investments, and restricted cash at FY2026 year-end. This is a balance-sheet snapshot, not a measure of recurring cash generation. To assess earnings quality, check operating cash flow, free cash flow, margins, and balance-sheet changes in each company’s filings, using aligned periods and clearly labeled currency and accounting scope. The cited figures alone do not supply a complete matched cash-flow comparison.

Use prior-year figures as context, not as a direct ranking

SK hynix’s FY2025 release reported revenue of KRW 97.1467 trillion and operating profit of KRW 47.2063 trillion; HBM revenue more than doubled year on year. These annual results help show the business’s recent growth, but they should not be compared as though they were the same period as Micron FY2026 or either company’s Q2 2026 result. SK hynix’s FY2025 release gives that annual context.

What do capacity plans and the memory cycle mean for investors?

Memory production requires substantial investment, and new capacity can change the supply-demand balance. In strong markets, expansion may help a company meet customer demand; if supply later grows faster than demand, utilization and average selling prices can weaken. Micron’s FY2025 filing warns that global memory oversupply without commensurate demand may lower average selling prices and materially harm results. It also identifies manufacturing utilization, process integration, returns on R&D, and efficient capital spending as important to success. These are disclosed risks, not a prediction that oversupply is imminent.

Micron’s FY2026 net capital expenditures were $27.37 billion. SK hynix described plans to expand production while maintaining capex discipline. Samsung’s outlook described continued supply constraints and robust server demand. These disclosures are not directly comparable capex plans: they differ in period, company scope, and level of detail. Look at the amount, timing, intended product, packaging capacity, customer commitments, and expected utilization behind each company’s investment rather than assuming that expansion is automatically positive or negative.

  • Ask whether announced HBM products have reached samples, customer qualification, shipments, or sustained high-volume production; those stages carry different execution risks.
  • Check whether advanced packaging and other bottlenecks can support the planned output, not only whether wafer capacity is being added.
  • Track whether customer demand and commitments support added capacity if AI-server demand slows.
  • Compare capital spending with cash generation over a full cycle, not only during a period of unusually strong pricing.

How can you compare valuation without mistaking peak earnings for cheapness?

A low price-to-earnings ratio can result from unusually high current earnings near a cyclical peak. If memory prices or utilization fall, earnings may contract and the multiple calculated on current earnings can stop looking low. Compare valuation using more than one scenario: current or consensus earnings, a normalized mid-cycle earnings estimate, and a downside case with weaker prices or utilization. State the assumptions rather than presenting a single multiple as a verdict.

On October 7, 2026, the retrieved Stock Analysis pages showed forward P/E ratios of 5.94 for Micron and 4.32 for SK hynix. These are estimate-based market-data snapshots, not audited company figures; no comparable Samsung figure was available in the cited data. They therefore do not establish a three-company ranking. Micron market statistics and SK hynix market statistics should be checked for a fresh, same-date comparison.

For a fairer three-way screen, use the same date and currency convention, consistent share and enterprise-value definitions, and comparable forecast periods. Review diluted share counts and net cash or debt, then compare both forward earnings and normalized earnings. Estimates can change quickly, so document the estimate source and date. Samsung’s diversified businesses also complicate a simple company-wide P/E comparison: consolidated earnings are not a pure memory valuation.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Define the exposure. Record each company’s DRAM, NAND, HBM, and adjacent server-memory or storage businesses, noting where segment detail is available.
  2. Label the periods. Separate fiscal-year figures from calendar-quarter figures and avoid ranking unlike periods.
  3. Separate segment from company totals. Do not use Samsung consolidated revenue or profit as if it were memory-segment performance.
  4. Mark the HBM milestone. Distinguish samples, qualification, mass shipments, production yield, packaging capacity, and profitable volume; attribute company claims.
  5. Assess investment and supply. Compare capex, capacity timing, utilization, customer commitments, and the risk that supply could outpace demand.
  6. Model more than one earnings level. Test valuation against current estimates, normalized earnings, and a downside cycle case using one valuation method and data date.
  7. Record uncertainty. Flag preliminary results, management outlooks, stale market data, missing segment comparisons, and any assumptions that drive the result.

What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you

The cited disclosures show all three companies benefiting from strong memory and server-related demand, while their product mix, business structures, reporting periods, and HBM milestones differ. They do not establish a complete current valuation ranking or predict which stock will deliver the best return. Treat the comparison as a way to identify what needs verification in current filings and market data, not as a personalized investment recommendation.
