To compare IT services companies, keep four measures distinct: deal-win value, bookings, recognized revenue, and management guidance. Each answers a different question. A multi-year contract’s total contract value (TCV) is not next quarter’s revenue, and bookings are not a standardized industry measure. Compare the definition, period, business scope, and currency basis for every figure before drawing conclusions.
What do deal wins, bookings, revenue, and guidance measure?
Deal wins and total contract value
TCV is the value of a contract over its term as described in a company’s disclosure. It is not automatically annual revenue, annual contract value, or backlog. A large multi-year TCV win can indicate future work, but without contract duration and conversion details it does not establish how much revenue will be recognized in a particular quarter or year. Record the company’s definition, contract term if disclosed, number of wins, and whether wins are new customers or expansions.
Bookings
Bookings report signed business under a company-defined measure. The name alone does not tell you whether the figure covers a quarter, a fiscal year, or a trailing twelve months, or precisely what is included. Keep quarterly, annual, and trailing-twelve-month figures separate and note whether the company reports total bookings, large-deal bookings, or another category.
Book-to-bill
Book-to-bill relates bookings to revenue over a stated period. It can add context about booking activity relative to sales, but it does not show when booked work will convert to revenue. Compare the ratio only when the companies’ calculation and periods are understood; it is not a substitute for reported revenue growth.

Recognized revenue and guidance
Revenue is realized performance for the reporting period, while guidance is management’s outlook for a specified future period. Record whether growth is reported in U.S. dollars or constant/local currency, which business segment is covered, and the forecast range and assumptions. Guidance is an outlook, not a guarantee.
How do you compare IT services companies?
Build a comparison from the same reporting period wherever possible. Put one company on each row and preserve the metric definitions in the column labels or notes. The following framework identifies what to collect rather than implying that companies disclose every item.

| Comparison area | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Deal wins | Number of wins; TCV; contract term; new logo versus expansion; deal-size bands, when disclosed | TCV can reflect different contract lengths and company classifications. Cognizant, for example, defines large deals as at least $100 million TCV and mega deals as at least $500 million in its Q4 2025 release; those thresholds should not be assumed for another company. Cognizant’s release |
| Bookings | Company definition; quarter, fiscal year, or trailing twelve months; total and large-deal values; book-to-bill if reported | Aligns both the measure and its time window. A quarterly total is not directly comparable with an annual or trailing-twelve-month figure. |
| Revenue conversion | Reported revenue growth and constant/local-currency growth; segment boundaries | Revenue is not the same as signed deal value. Currency movement and segment scope can change the apparent comparison. |
| Guidance | Date issued; forecast period and scope; growth range; currency basis; assumptions; margin outlook if provided | These details determine what counts as meeting or missing the forecast. |
| Quality and context | Customer concentration, industry mix, margins, and relevant management commentary, where disclosed | These details can help explain whether bookings are broad-based and whether activity is translating into profitable revenue. |
What do company disclosures show in practice?
The figures below are period-specific examples from company materials, not universal benchmarks. They illustrate why the reporting period, metric, and scope must travel with every number.
| Company and period | Bookings or deal wins | Revenue or other comparison context | Interpretation note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wipro, FY2025–26 | Total bookings TCV: $16,449 million; large-deal TCV: $7,829 million | IT Services revenue: $10,478.1 million; the release also reports segment revenue, constant-currency growth, operating margin, mix, and guidance performance | TCV and annual revenue are different measures; do not treat their ratio as a conversion rate. Wipro results |
| Cognizant, 2025 results reported in February 2026 | Trailing-twelve-month bookings: $28.4 billion, up 5% year over year; book-to-bill approximately 1.3x | The release also provides 2026 guidance and labels constant-currency growth, adjusted operating margin, and adjusted EPS as non-GAAP measures | Keep the trailing-twelve-month basis explicit. Check the company’s definitions and reconciliations before comparing adjusted or non-GAAP measures. Cognizant results |
| Accenture, fiscal 2026 | New bookings: $84.54 billion; book-to-bill: 1.1; consulting and managed-services bookings are reported separately | Revenue: $74.18 billion; results distinguish U.S.-dollar and local-currency growth and compare revenue with the previously guided local-currency range | Accenture’s annual bookings and revenue figures should not be conflated with quarterly measures from another company. Accenture results |
| HCLTech, Q1 FY2027 | TCV of new deal wins: $2,407 million | The investor-relations page presents this alongside constant-currency revenue and forward guidance | Verify the release date and period when using a volatile current figure. HCLTech financial results |
TCS’s investor-relations hub links its earnings calls and annual-report materials and identifies TCV as an investor metric. For a dedicated TCS comparison, use its primary reports to establish the company-specific definition and period values rather than filling gaps with another company’s terminology.

What do bookings and deal wins tell you about future revenue?
Rising bookings or a large TCV win can support the view that a company has a substantial flow of contracted work ahead. It does not, by itself, show when that work will be delivered, how much will be recognized in the next period, or whether it will carry attractive margins. Contract length, deal mix, business scope, and the company’s own booking rules matter.
Use bookings as a leading-context measure, not a forecast on its own. Cross-check it against reported revenue growth, segment mix, margins, and management guidance. If bookings rise while revenue growth or guidance weakens, the figures may reflect different timing or business mix; the disclosures alone do not establish the cause.

How should you compare guidance fairly?
- Match the forecast period. Compare a quarter with the same quarter, or a fiscal-year outlook with another fiscal-year outlook. Record the date each forecast was issued.
- Match the scope. Check whether the forecast covers the whole company or a particular segment, and whether acquisitions or other scope changes affect it.
- Match the currency basis. Do not compare reported-dollar growth with constant- or local-currency growth as though they were identical.
- Preserve the full range and assumptions. Record the low and high ends of the outlook and any stated assumptions. A range is more informative than a single point selected from it.
- Compare the later result with the earlier range. Use the same scope and currency basis to determine whether reported performance landed inside, above, or below the prior guidance.
Wipro’s results show quarterly guidance alongside actual performance, while Accenture’s fiscal 2026 release compares revenue with its previously guided local-currency range. These examples make the forecast basis part of the comparison, not a footnote.

- Different definitions: “Bookings,” “large deal,” and TCV may be company-specific. Do not assume a shared industry standard.
- Different time windows: A quarter, fiscal year, and trailing twelve months answer different questions.
- Different segment boundaries: Service and product mix, consulting and managed services, or segment reorganizations can alter what is included.
- Currency movements: Reported-currency growth and constant/local-currency growth can diverge.
- Acquisitions and one-off items: These can affect reported comparisons; check the release and annual report for their treatment.
- Different accounting or adjusted measures: Non-GAAP or adjusted metrics require their definitions and reconciliations before comparison.
- Missing contract detail: If duration or annual contract value is not disclosed, do not estimate it from TCV.
Company releases do not provide a complete standardized reconciliation across the industry. Where a disclosure is absent, mark it as unavailable rather than inferring a comparable value.

A practical checklist before drawing an investment conclusion
- Use the same quarter or fiscal period for each company, and label it explicitly.
- Write down each company’s definition of TCV, bookings, large deals, and book-to-bill.
- Separate quarter, annual, and trailing-twelve-month values.
- Keep reported-currency and constant/local-currency growth distinct.
- Compare deal activity with recognized revenue, segment mix, margins, and guidance.
- Check the latest primary earnings release and relevant annual-report definitions; record what is missing rather than estimating.
